A couple of things which aren't inconsistent with the season as a whole at the 10% of the season mark.

- TT is still invisible. Aho, while producing has been making some uncharacteristic mistakes. TT really needs to get going. He's not been good and it's a big contributor to why the whole line is struggling IMO.
- I still don't like the construction of that line, which only stayed together for only a couple of minutes 5v5 last night. With TT being a perimeter winger, it's leaving Jarvis to take way too many hits/too much abuse. He's not going to last as the game intensity ramps up. Hopefully when Patches comes back, that will help.
- KK is still invisible other than face-offs.
- Necas and Svech are dominant and really fun to watch. nuff said.
- Necas is really utilizing his speed and ability to make plays at speed in a positive way this year. Not forcing things like last. year and it's really impressive to see.
- Burns and Slavin don't have chemistry yet. Maybe it's because Burns has always been top dog on both ends of the ice when in SJ, and here, he doesn't need to be? Not just the mistake of following Slavin behind the net last night, but they haven't been in synch for the most part. Hamilton and TDA didn't join Slavin on the top line right away (Hamilton played with TVR a lot early in the season when he injured his hand, TDA started on the bottom pairing before moving up). Hopefully it just needs more time.
- Coghlan...woof. He's jumpy and fumbling pucks all the time, but who the hell goes for a line change when he did (after he failed to get the puck out far enough) and give up an odd man rush like that. He's not been a good #6 defenseman to date. Hopefully CDH can get/stay healthy or we'll need another solution there.
- After Svech and Necas, Martinook has probably been the best forward this season. That's not a good thing for the team as a whole.
- Not expecting a lot of points from them, but that Martinook-Staal-Fast line looked a lot more like the Nino-Staal-Fast of last year. They were really good overall and the best line last night.

Overall, still a work in progress, but good to have a 5-2-1 record at this point, so I'll take it.

I wonder if Teravainen needs to get back to the right side to get going. Maybe putting him on the right of Kotkaniemi and Svechnikov would get him going.

Problem with that would be, when then do you do with Jarvis. I guess you could move Necas to C and Aho to LW, but I would be shocked if that happened. Although, I do think Necas should be getting a look at C at some point.

My guess is that we see Drury called up today, if Stepan’s injury will keep him out a few games. This is good, I’d rather Drury be up with the big team, playing sporadically bs down in the minors. He’s got nothing to prove down there.

I also wouldn’t be too shocked to see LaJoie or Lagesson up soon if CDH is out much longer. Coghlan has looked awful and is not providing any offense.

Feeling amazing waking up with that beautiful finish to end the game playing throughout my head.

The only thing that’s really nagging and it’s continuing to grow from previous seasons, but what can we do about our discipline? It feels like this team could take that next step in leathality if we could just cut the amount of penalties we take in half and stay out of the box. It’s not like we’re a bad defensive team.

Do you think it’s the way we play defense cause we might overplay a little too much and end up getting beat sometimes or is it just general overall lapses in judgment from a player level?

I think part of it might be the way we play "in general" that might lead to it. We are an aggressive forechecking team that also has defensemen that are both active in the offensive zone and play tight gaps in the D-zone. If our players aren't disciplined and/or get over-aggressive, it can lead to penalties.

That said, Trocheck and Cole were guys that took a lot of penalties (as did Svech) which weren't related to how we play and they are now gone.

Also, as of right now, the Canes have taken the 29th least number of minor penalties in the NHL this year and 22nd in Penalties take/60 min so we aren't taking a lot of penalties yet. Last year, we had the 7th MOST Minor penalties taken.

Going back and re-watching segments of the game, I understand it is going to take some time for Burns to settle into this system. Im cutting him some slack, especially with him contributing on the offensive side. Im also not using the hot starts of the last couple years be an indicator of success this year. Lots of factors into how things are going this season. I expect whatever kinks the team has to get worked out over the course of the season, and the veteran pedigree to take over in the playoffs.

Didn’t see the game, was busy watching Drake Maye live for the first time (wow) … but what a stroke of luck that Necas had such a bad season last year and was *almost* traded.

Would not have put “carries the team” on any game’s bingo card, ever.

I probably should have checked out where we stood this year in minors penalties taken before posting lol.

That’s good that it seems like we’re cleaning it up so far! I guess it’s just been some penalties kind of taken at inopportune times like Skjei and Burns in the third of the Edmonton game or just kind of the snowball effect of all the ones taken in the 2nd last night that make it still feel like last year a little bit.

I think it's telling how effectively the Svech-KK-Necas line is working even though KK isn't showing up on the scoresheet yet. I don't think that it's a coincidence that Svech and Necas are thriving so much at 5-on-5. Coghlan could stand to improve his game some, though it's important to note that he's playing on his unnatural side because CDH is hurt.

While it's good to have a 5-2-1 record, it's a bit misleading, because our schedule hasn't exactly been difficult. We've faced 4 potential/expected playoff teams this year, and lost 3 of them. Would have been all 4 if not for Necas last night.

That's...a concern... especially considering how we've struggled even in the wins.

But it's early and, clearly, not everyone on the team is playing their best. So hopefully we'll get the kinks worked out over the next few weeks.

Coghlan is playing on his unnatural side because Chatfield has been much better than him.

It’s a coincidence. Drury could be doing what Koko is doing. He’s winning faceoffs and making very expected safe plays with the puck. To say it’s no coincidence is to diminish what Necas and to lesser extent Svech have brought so far. Necas is going solo against the world and winning right now. If we shake up the first line Aho needs to be with Necas.

To me this team is:
Necas

Svech

Aho
Everyone else on forward.

Burns has already fumbled more pucks than I can remember Tony and Dougie combined gaffing but he’s got a great beard and a smile so we’ll love him anyways and say he’s the best. As long as he steps up when it matters most like he did last night maybe that’s enough. Maybe not.

It’s a win. Way to be clutch in OT, but that may be a Necas only compliment.

On Canes Corner AGold mentions goalie worries as the biggest long term concern. Tosses out Reimer's name as an option, if needed, as Koochie isn't ready in his eyes. The way he coyly tosses out stuff it's often hard to tell if he is speculating or has been tipped off about something.
It looks like the video is out on Kochetkov so he isn’t as strong this season.

If we were playing great hockey, and our top guys were performing and we still went 1-2-1 against those teams, I’d be more concerned.

True. But those bottom teams we did beat (Vancouver, Seattle, Sharks) have beat some of the other expected playoff teams, so hockey is weird and we're still fine.
