Just a thought...

But shouldn't our anthem be sung half in French and English in International victories?

Is it really that hard to teach the kids the first half of the anthem in French?

Start from the U-17's that way they have plenty of time to learn it before anyone ever makes the World Junior team.

What do you all think?

Speaking for BC, it's simply that lots of people don't speak French. I wouldn't be against it, I just don't want to butcher it.

I was waiting for this post. I knew it was coming.

Thank you.

But seriously, on the one hand, I think the players should be able to choose for themselves. We usually (always?) have both French and English players on the team.

On the other hand, I remember in the film Invictus, the rugby team learned the multilingual version of the South African anthem.

Waiting for this post from an English Canadian who just feels as a bilingual nation that it's right?

Wow, quite a fortune teller you are.

Read my post again.

I’m actually a bilingual Canadian.

In any event, as soon as I saw Alexis Lafreniere singing in English, I was like, uh oh, that’s going to be trouble.

He just slapped his own province in the face. So disrespectful. Someone on HF will notice.

He should move to Ottawa and join the Senators.

They can sing it however they want, in English or French or some other language, or they can not sing it at all. To try to force anything else would be ridiculous. The thought does amuse me though given the quality of the players' singing to imagine them trying to do it but also in a different language.

Every child in South Africa and New Zealand represents their colours and anthems in their proper language.

Why can't Canadian kids?

To an earlier poster, it's not one province, over 10 million Canadians speak French.

Including me, thank you very much.

If Alexis had decided to sing entirely in French, I would have taken no offence at all.

Most English speakers butcher the French part because no one knows what the actual words are they just say what sounds right.

The anthem is supposed to unite your country, no one is stopping players/fans from singing the whole thing in French if they want to. Hell i couldn’t even tell that they just played the English lyrics because I’m not going to let a little thing like one chorus get in the way of celebrating. I don’t think a single Francophone gave a damn, it’s only the people at hfboards that enjoy creating drama out of nothing.

Because the comparison is poor and Quebec has a long storied history and present with racism, discrimination. The proper comparison here would be to translate it into various aboriginal languages and sing it in those.

It would be nice if it happened but there was a reason for what happened with South Africa and why Canadian players and coaches didn't sit down and talk about singing in both languages.

To reiterate.

This is not a complaint.

I'm not even French lol.

Hockey is our nation's unifier, and how wonderful would it be to have the anthem sung how it should be.

In both official languages.

I’d argue that it usually is. Just at the same time.

At Sens games, they do the bilingual version, and virtually everyone sings it that way, so I get it.

But a spontaneous post-game anthem by the players is different IMO.

Anyway, I don’t mean to make light of your comment - it’s fair for discussion.

Hot take : The anthem should be entirely sung in French, for the same reason as The Kinks > Van Halen.

And rounding up, 8.5 million of them are in Quebec.

When the players sing the national anthem it is usually done spontaneously after a huge win. It isn’t scripted.
