Canada's goalie future (Toronto Sun article) why are our goalies so thin now?

That's pretty cool!
Thatcher being an ice hockey goaltender from San Diego definitely knows a thing or two about figuring it out on his own.

In the early 2000s when I was learning to play goal, things were starting to get far more technical very quickly. It really was a treat to come up at that time, when the position was evolving so rapidly. I was even asked by the PE teacher in middle school to run a "goalie clinic", just so that our school floor hockey games would be more competitive. The kids that I worked with ended up really enjoying playing goal, and were markedly improved for our games.

Everybody understands the basic concept of playing goal - you just block the net. But it's a very technical position, and learning how to find your own style while using proper technique can make things a lot more fun. As sad as it is, though - you do need to have a serious passion to be able to be "your own coach". Most kids won't get there without having some formal training early on to make things stick.
It’s just a small pool of coaches to draw from. Those with some level of experience in the position who go into coaching.

If we're really concerned about developing goalies in Canada, perhaps we should go back to excluding European goalies from Canada's major junior leagues. A quick check shows there are six Europeans in the WHL alone. That's six lost development opportunities.

they did that awhile ago. Not sure why it got reverted.

I totally agree ftr.. I'd prefer no Euro's in the CHL at all tbh.

Yeah pretty much. Remember back when Don Cherry said it in the late 1990s and people lost their minds? He wasn't wrong. We should be producing our own kids first and foremost.

So here is my question here. It is the World Cup, Canada is in the championship game. Or is it a best of 3? Either way, we are facing the next best country, their goalie is better than ours. Our goalie is..................Tristan Jarry. Or Darcy Keumper. That's just about the best now for us, so I'll pick them. Anyway, are you comfortable with them in net for this big game? Is it one of those things where they have to steal a game or will the fact that they have a ton of talent in front of them make it so that they only have to play "decent"? Keumper did win the Cup against a superior goalie in 2022 and won by that same sort of mantra. So are you comfortable with hockey supremacy on the line with either of these guys in net?

I don't know a lot about him other than he has some impressive stats and isn't turning 16 until November (?). But what is it about him that is unique?
Mid you I’m not the best evaluator of goalie prospects. But as someone who is well invested in the scouting community this kid has been raved about for years.
His poise, his clam and collected demeaned for his age is something else, he looked like a 20 year NHL vet at the ages of 13. It’s like he never gets rattled. He is very good at squaring up to the shooter, big, athletic. Almost everything you want in a goalie, D’Aigle has it. At 15.
