Any St. John’s ice caps fan could have told you Eddie Pasquale is not the guy. He sometimes has a tendency to make routine saves a yard sale. He can be phenomenal, just not the guy I’d want as my starter.

Tale of 2 halves.

The US came out on fire, and with their energy and talent took it to Canada.
But Canada’s maturity and vets took over the young kids in the 2nd period.

The difference was goaltending. Mann stood tall, Pasquale not so much.

Entertaining game.

It beats Biathlon all to hell that's for sure.

Canada can still go directly to the QF with a huge win versus China!
Well, assuming Finland/Sweden doesn't go to overtime.

If it does, unless something crazy happens, Canada will play China twice an in a row... which is basically like a bye.

Biathlon is fun to watch. Don’t knock it.

Canada can still go directly to the QF with a huge win versus China!

Maybe not if there is an OT game in another group as they use a 3-2-1-0 point system.

That said the goal difference with China in the group means they will assuredly get the 5 seed at least and play China in the first knockout round.

Love watching Olympics hockey without NHL players
I'm good with it all. Seeing the youths playing in high stakes tourney is cool.
I really could do without watching Staal. If that was supposed to be his senior leadership tonight, it was a huge miss.
Maybe he smartens up and plays within his capability, which ain't so great either.

Edit: still need to see a best-on-best event soon, though

US was better but man is that just very mediocre hockey to watch.

Of course it’s not the NHL. But so what?
Team USA is basically an NCAA all-star team. Do we complain about how mediocre the play is every-time we watch a college game? Or the CHL or WJC?
This is essentially highest level of non NHL play there is right now. A lot of these guys were ex nhlers/AHL all-stars, or, for the young guys, will be NHLrs.

Enjoy it for what it is.

Agreed

I wonder how many kids this game inspired?

The 1980 US Team is significantly better than this years team. Matty Beniers would be shifted to wing and play in the top 6. He wouldn't beat out Johnson, Broten or Pavelich.

Sanderson would be probably the #1 D man followed by Morrow, Baker, and Ramsay.

Hard to believe a US Olympic Team from 42 years ago is still better. Of course this group is missing
Hughes, Zegras, Boldy, Turcotte, Wahlstrom, Kalyiev and Caufield.

However the 1980 Team was missing Langway, Mullen, Roberts, Gorence and Nilan.

Funny because in 2002 people would have been crying with only 4 points in the group stage... Guess they weren't it either.
People would have been crying about it because they would have actually cared.

I'm very impressed with the Americans and their young players. I did feel Canada had better possession towards the latter half, of course that means jack crap. USA seems dialed in.

Canada's got their work cut out for them, who knows, maybe an extra game might help? We are aware Claude Julien just landed in Beijing a few days ago, but lets hope things turn around.
