I didn't want to get caught up in the emotion of losing the other night. It was disappointing but I assume Marsch and his staff learned a great deal.
I do feel Mexico have laid out a blueprint for many teams that don't have the athleticism we do.. (which will be most CONCACAF and many teams from other regions).
1. If we cannot get in behind, we don't currently have a threat to get an early cross in, honestly we don't have a real threat to get to the line and get a cross or cut back in.... or it hasn't been a focus anyway.
2. We are trying to play intricate stuff but haven't yet shown we can do it.. I do feel Osorio started for this reason and he is one of our best bets here. I think we can do this but it should be part of a balanced attacking diet.
3. Junior Hoilett is a clear miss and it is more apparent than ever. His guile is needed more than Tajon or Shaff's pace. He can also shoot from distance , which again should not be a go to move but we should at least have the occasional go.
4. Set Pieces... a problem for every coach of Canada and one we need to solve. We had plenty of corners and don't see to have any plan to get flicks, block the keeper, outside the box runs etc... That has to get better.
The free kicks have been dreadful.
It's not doom and gloom for me at all.. We have many of the elements we need... I feel we do need to work towards some of the points listed above.
St Clair will probably watch the film of the free kick. I feel someone of his athleticism and length should get there.
Keep an eye on DeAndre Kerr.. He's now deposited early crosses into the net with beautiful headed goals on back to back weeks. We do not do any of this right now..
Finally - had we been playing Panama, I would have been looking for us to really go to the bench and test some of the new faces. The fact we have the USA heightens the importance of this game for many reasons.. So I suspect we will go pretty strong and try to heap more misery on the Americans. It certainly spices up this third place game and you can be damn sure I'll be cheering Panama on in the final. I truly cannot stand anything about Mexico..
