...Konecny is scratched because Jon Cooper is a homer idiot and is playing USELESS Cirelli instead...lost ALL respect for the guy...Konecny looked great against the Finns; that entire line was great...Jon Cooper, Don Sweeney, Peter DeBoer, Doug Armstrong, etc. built this team for THEMSELVES, not Canada...they didn't take THE BEST, they took THEIR GUYS and force them down OUR throats...if they are in charge of the Olympic Team, it'll be the EXACT same bullshyte...every f**kin' one of them should be fired and ashamed...

well said, its shocking the Hockey Canada has not implemented a process to ensure that these types of situations don't happen anymore given the past problems with Hockey Canada. The old boys club still exists and seemingly able to do whatever they want.

I agree Konecny should be in, but in fairness i'm not sure what DeBoer has to do with this. None of his Dallas players are on the team. Cirelli is a Cooper guy 100%

Regardless, we have enough talent to still win and lets hope the team brings their A game tonight!

...DeBoer agreed with Sweeney not to take Thompson because "they had a problem with him"...

I would think that Canada has enough experienced coaches kicking around to have one who isn't currently coaching players in the NHL.

Is Cirelli playing over Konecny really that big of a deal? They're the two forwards that have looked the worst in this tournament imo (relatively speaking). It's not something I'm going to get worked up about.

perhaps not, that said, if Cooper utilized Konecny in a way that focused on his strengths like he is with Cirelli it would be different. Ultimately, the brass that selected Canada wanted certain things and Cirelli has alot of them. To me Jarvis should simply be in the press box tonight, that is unless Travis is hurt and can't play at a level that he is capable of.

It is possible that TK is hurt or ill (he did miss a practice early in the tournament, and was scratched for the U.S. game). Maybe Cooper thinks Konecny is the kind of player that could be goaded into a penalty while trying to assert himself physically. Maybe Cooper simply wanted Jarvis' speed in the lineup.

Overall though, I wouldn't expect or want that 4th line (Marchand/Bennett/Jarvis) to play a whole lot tonight. Same for the Cirelli line (Hagel/Cirelli/Marner). I'd aim for 10-12 minutes per line, including PK time, and load up the big boys.

I still get Lalime in Game 7 flashbacks thinking about Binnington in net back there.

C'mon Jordan, play the game of your life!

Can you conceive of a situation where Cooper would healthy scratch a player from his own team? Jeopardize a relationship with his own player as he gears up for the Stanley Cup playoffs?

That's the problem with this process.

It's not the end of the world (Rob Zamuner didn't lose us the Olympics in 1998) but I do think it's a symptom of a poorly chosen coach.

It should be an independent former NHL coach for a reason. I'm sure there are tons of them kicking around.

Cooper is a professional, I have little doubt he’d scratch Cirelli if the situation warranted it. It’s a simple conversation with the player, and Cirelli is presumably not an idiot and should know he’s like the 11th most important guy in the lineup. The coaching staff and leadership in the room should ensure all these players play for the maple leaf on their jersey, not the name on the back.

That’s my take. Plus, coaches not currently in the league could be out of touch with the current state of play in the game, the players, tactics, etc. I like having an NHL head coach, provided they’re a proven winner and there’s an experienced staff of assistants that can act as a check and balance.

Let’s go, Canada! We’re the weakest we’ve possibly ever been after a decade of miserable drafts, missing 3 of our top-4 d-men, had a questionable bottom 6, and very dubious goaltending…and the boys came through and made sure we’re still on top. Let’s celebrate this beautiful team tonight (make sure to pour one out for Binnington) and then keep it rolling next year, when we should finally get some serious help from the next wave.

everyone ok with Binnington now? My faith was in Cooper. Came down to one shot but that is down to just how good the US team is.. Binnington was the difference. Helly has still yet to win a single big game.

This team needs a massive overhaul for next year. Chalk the 4 nations OT win to a coin toss. Too many Tampa Bay guys on the team that shouldnt be there. Defense was pretty average. Yes binnington showed up when it mattered but he let in stinkers first three games.

That was a nice win, one that the country needed and can feel good about for a variety of reasons. I think many have turned their focus already to the 2026 Olympics, and even McDavid and MacKinnon in their post-game interviews have cited this tournament and its role in the build up to the Olympic tournament, but this is a win worth celebrating. I don't want to dwell on the issues that existed but rather highlight some players that deserve some credit.

First off, credit to McDavid and MacKinnon for largely carrying Canada's offence at this event. They are not Gretzky and Lemieux, but not two forwards have carried Canada at this level since 1987 and full credit to them for performing when they has massive pressure on them. There really is a sense of historical harmony to have him score a tournament clinching goal like that. Crosby got a lot of attention as well and despite his obvious injury he did a good job channeling early 2000s Lemieux for Canada at this event. I generally liked how Stone played at this event, his great stick stands out even at this level. Bennett was generally effective and someone who knew exactly what his role was. Hagel is another guy who knew his role and put his all into it. Finally among the forwards, Marner is often a whipping boy on a national level but he always competed in this event and it has to be said - two overtimes for Canada, two overtime points for Marner.

I thought that the defence as a whole was very solid. Not a spectacular group outside of Makar but they played well and were pretty consistently defensively stout. Doughty in particular was a key player for Canada in the big games despite barely making the team, and Parayko was excellent in doing exactly what his job was. Big credit to Harley as well for showing up and playing well despite very strange circumstances.

Finally, lots of credit to Binnington for his championship game performance. He was excellent in the final game and at times carried Canada. Lots of respect to him.

I'm happy with how this team played and very glad that they paid off the excitement that built at home for this event as it went along.

Not sure how that game makes people change their tune on Binnington. A good result doesn’t change things. He made a couple big saves late but he still let in a bad one and spent the entire game swimming in his crease and out of position. Have never felt less comfortable with a goalie in net.
