Agree. Would have avoided the NBA return too.

This game has a chance to be the highest viewed game in the history of the sport. Hope that doesn't diminish that

Seeing on X that many players may get the game off on Saturday for their respective NHL teams. Such a short turnaround. I think tonight ( Wedesday) was the best night to do it - but it does give an extra day of healing to the players.

Yeah, not sure why the game wasn't tonight. Gonna be really awkward having NHL games going so shortly after the tourny.

Today is the day! I really think after a relatively anonymous game 7 in the SCF against Florida that McDavid needs to have a legacy performance tonight in order to cement his status amongst Canadian hockey legends but hockey legends in general. A virtuoso performance tonight will be his Lemieux and Gretzky in 87, Lemieux in 2002, Crosby in 2010 etc. He’s probably the most talented player ever to play the game and needs to to turn up when the lights are bright. Go Canada!

Regarding your point on the Tampa players, I think you need to look at Point separately from Hagel and Cirelli. Other than MacKinnon, Point is really the one guy on the roster who can hang with McDavid in terms of speed, and likely has the requisite skill to complement him as well. If anything, Point was under-utilized in the first few games, and was well-deserving of his "promotion" up to the McDavid line. That's where he belongs - on McDavid's or MacKinnon's wing, in a scoring role.

I've seen enough of Cirelli to think that he is in over his head at this level of competition. He's a great puck hound and PKer, but isn't skilled enough offensively to produce at a tournament such as this. He's also weak on the faceoff dot. For a defensive centre, we (Canada) need someone better at that aspect of the game and ideally that defensive centre would be offensively gifted enough to not only shut-down the opposition's best lines, but also contribute offensively, Cirelli is a black-hole offensively, so when he's on the ice we seem to be in the mindset of defending, not attacking. Alas, Canada does not seem to have a Jonathan Toews at their disposal at this point in the cycle.

Hagel is between the two, I think. I like what I've seen out of Hagel. I think he belongs; maybe not in an important role on this team or on the 2026 team, but a supporting/depth role would be fine for him. He's a very good player. I think he'd be more productive at this tournament if he wasn't attached to Cirelli's hip throughout.

I agree that Cooper rode Cirelli and Hagel a little too hard early in the tournament. The ice times seemed to be better distributed in the Finland game, but I'd still like to see Cirelli and Hagel more at the 10-12 minute level.

As for Jarvis, I would have liked to have seen more of him, but I can't see Cooper scratch Konecny for the final. If that's the case, then I agree with Cooper on that call. Konecny and Bennett play a more rugged, in-your-face style of game more suitable against this U.S. team. This is such a short tournament and there isn't many games or much opportunity to shuffle players in and out depending on the opposition. Obviously Jarvis made the subtle but high-skilled pass on the Marchand goal in the Sweden game. He played a clean game. I actually think Jarvis and Hagel on the wings of a more offensively-competent, 200 foot centre (say, Robert Thomas) could have been a really good line for us. In the end, a forward needs to be scratched. I don't think there is really any shame in that for Jarvis. Jarvis acquitted himself very well in limited ice time and probably solidified a spot for himself on the 2026 Olympic team.
Yeah I was referring to Cirelli and Hagel, Cirelli mainly. Point is great.

5000 km away from home but I felt like getting in the mood for tonight by decorating the Appartment; denoting the very specific choice of this particular Canada sweater. Go Canada!

I mean, he's been better than Bennett, Hagel and Cirelli with the least playing time per game and only having played 2 games being scratched last game. 6th in points per game for Canada in "this entire tournament." You're probably right though that he shouldn't have been on the team with Cooper as coach as Cooper has no interest in giving him any opportunities
and with this, they left off the team the 3rd leading nhl goal scorer

Odd decision. I thought Konecny played very well against Finland and was a nice piece of that 4th line which really controlled a lot of play. Much stiffer test tonight, but was looking forward to see if they could put together some shifts down low in the US zone.

Cirelli was never coming out under Coop.

Konecny has looked really out of place on this team. Hes talented enough, but Torts drilled so many boring hockey habbits into his head it it shows playing with so many skiled players. Sacrificing offensive instincts in order to play it safe kills plays and cooper is probably fed up with it.

Shame, TK could bring a lot of positives but hes just another player torta has ruined.

McDavid it is your turn to shine. I have been saying it for years.....until he creates his "moment" his career will always have an asterix beside it. This is his chance to create his moment. Leading Canada to victory tonight will be far more important in his legacy than any individual award he has ever won.

Crosby has his moments.

MacKinnon has his Cup moment.

Lemieux has his.

Gretz has his.

Orr, Howe, Richard and so on and so forth.

Connor McDavid.......it is here.....it is tonight.....all you have to do is DO IT!

Let's f***ing gooooooooo!!!!!!

This will likely be my last pre-game post but I will say, there is no excuse to not win this game. That is not to say that USA is a bad team - it is in fact a very strong team. This is also fairly weak for an edition of team Canada. This team has a roster good enough though. Loads of experience vs very little. Some historically significant players who have been clamouring for years to get this chance. The idiocy that has been forced upon us by the carelessness of USA (I'll leave it at that). The bullshit flowing around, plus the result of the first game. The country could use this win.

USA has a great team, time to beat them.

Yeah, I agree re: Konecny. He was good in the Finland game (the whole line was), but I thought he was guilty of trying to do too much in the Sweden game and looked out of place - both physically on the ice, and conceptually as a best-on-best player for Team Canada. I get the sense he's the kind of player who'd get seriously amped up for a game like this, and prone to taking a bad penalty at an inopportune time. I thought Canada would have opted for Konecny's physical approach tonight over Jarvis, but Jarvis has been good in limited opportunity so far - and perhaps Cooper senses that his speed will play against the Americans. Let's see.

...Konecny is scratched because Jon Cooper is a homer idiot and is playing USELESS Cirelli instead...lost ALL respect for the guy...Konecny looked great against the Finns; that entire line was great...Jon Cooper, Don Sweeney, Peter DeBoer, Doug Armstrong, etc. built this team for THEMSELVES, not Canada...they didn't take THE BEST, they took THEIR GUYS and force them down OUR throats...if they are in charge of the Olympic Team, it'll be the EXACT same bullshyte...every f**kin' one of them should be fired and ashamed...
