Can Jack Hughes become the second best player behind Connor McDavid?

He’s brilliant, reminiscent of Thornton in some ways. Most of what I’m saying is thinking that he’ll be subject to the aging curve more than Hughes, who while also having had two injuries, is such an efficient skater. This is the common denominator of guys who have played for a long long time.

But hoping for the Pavelski type of late career trajectory for Drai is really defying the odds when there is far more evidence in the post lockout era that guys like St. Louis, Zuccarrello, Kane, Elias, etc. all lasted longer than their peers with size and have some monster late career seasons to show for it.
Draisaitl is a fast faster skater than Thornton ever was.

In 2014 Crosby had reached consensus best in the world, and we couldn’t reach a consensus on Ovechkin being 2nd best because of a guy named Evgeni Malkin.

So I doubt it.

Bedard hasn't done anything in the NHL and he is nowhere near as talented as Jack.
You would think an NJD fan would have learned from all the dumb D+1 comments made about Jack.

In 3 years, I could see it being:

1. McDad
2. Makar
3. Hughes
4. AM
5. EP

based on this forum, though, the prediction would be:

1. McDad
2. Jake Sanderson
3. Makar
4. Tim Stutzle
5. Caufield

He'd need to have a monster season this year and a great playoff run for me to consider it. I'm talking 120+ points and well over a ppg in the post-season. Is it possible? I guess so, but it's not a given. Especially considering how proven Draisaitl and Mackinnon are. He'd have to do it in a very convincing fashion.

pretty much this

If 60 goals and a Hart from Matthews wasn't enough to keep him in #2 for very long, it shows what it takes. So many guys chomping at your heels, if you don't replicate that again someone else is next up to take your spot.

Sure in your mind.

It's possible for sure, but it depends on if the current top crop fall off a little (Drai with 128 points last year, Matthews 60 goals hart season, Kuch 128 points 30 point postseasons, Mack being Mack, etc) and if Bedard really steps up as he ages. Time will tell, but Jack will be in the conversation. and I'm sure we will see many poll threads made about him in the years to come.

Why are people freaking out like the OP asked if Jack Hughes is currently the 2nd best player in the league??
He asked if it's possible for him to one day in the future be the 2nd best player in the league.
Those are vastly different questions.

Oh right, this is the place where you don't read anything, you just jump to defending your favorite player/team.

?

I am seeing a lot of people answer OPs question.

The obvious is answer is yes, he can, same answer I would apply to about a dozen players right now. He's certainly got the skill and the support.

For sure many have answered I was just laughing about the people that didn't.
I 100% agree, with your assessment, it's possible but unlikely he ever separates himself from the pack enough to be considered 2nd.

I think you're conjuring ghosts here.

At 18 he is inarguably more talented than Hughes was at the same age lol.
i wouldnt say his skill level is higher!

i think he was more ready and physically-fit for the NHL

also, though a long-winded debate maybe for another day, i tend to find that high-end shooters arent as skilled as their high-end playmaking counterparts

i think a heavy and accurate shot with a quick release can open the ice enough for you to seem as though you are a better playmaker

itd be the same way i dont think Steph Curry is as skilled of a player as point guards of his caliber!

edit: i do think Bedard ends up better though! just a matter of when and if Jack can outdo my feelings on him!

he’s shown more at his age than the putrid outputs of Leon and Mack at 22. He’s not better than them right now, but it’s almost a CERTAINTY that Hughes will be better.

What is this nonsense?

MacKinnon put up 39 goals and 97 points in 74 games and was runner up in the Hart race at age 22. Drai had 25 goals and 70 points in 78 games.

How are either of those, particularly MacKinnon, putrid?

Hughes is 3 games into his age 22 season. He’s coming off one really good season where the Devils top to bottom overachieved. The hockey world needs to slow down when it comes to this guy.

Wrong season. MacKinnon at 22 (4th season) 53 pts in 82 games. Leon at 22 had 70 in 78. Both are putrid to the 22 year old Jack Hughes 99 point season and his dominance in the the playoffs. People are saying he’ll be trailing these guys? Pleaaseee, he’s shown more and done more than any of those guys at their respective ages.
