Can Igor Larionov be a head coach in the NHL?

Would he step in to an nhl head coaching position or have to be in the AHL as a head coach or an NHL assistant coach first? Would Yzerman get him as an assistant coach?

I think the four nations has exercised openings for all kinds of coaching opportunities. But one day Russia will be in for obvious reasons right now they're not.

I watched a lot of his teams games(Torpedo and Russian team). I dont think that he is NHL level coach. At least for now. His way of coaching is very old style, he is trying to play in controlling of the puck and its not the high level of the game anymore. Hockey changed a couple of times after this strategy was disassembled.

What’s he going to prove in the AHL that didn’t already happen in the KHL?
Coaches, who desire a head coaching position, often follow path of either head coach in the AHL or assistant coach in the NHL. It’s rare an nhl head head coach doesn’t have NA experience, even at a low level. N

Understood, but that’s speaking from the perspective of a league that has historically not imported coaching talent. There’s nothing special about the AHL as a coaching environment, it’s just the default NA developmental league.

Hiring a coach out of the KHL and telling him he needs to go learn to coach in the AHL would be like the Sabres assigning Mogilny to the AHL when he came over.

He's one guy where I ask myself "How hasn't he been an NHL coach yet?" He just seems like he is fit for it. He was always the one among the KLM guys who knew English the best, who seemed to translate into the NHL the best, etc. Who aged well. He always seemed smart on and off the ice. Maybe he never wanted to, I don't know. But if he did, I can't imagine someone not giving him a chance.
