Can Darcy Kuemper win the Vezina?

To answer the OP, I'd love to see Kuemper get some votes. Especially the way much of the media fellates the Jets and shits on the Kings, Kuemper is doing similar numbers on what many would say is a worse team.

Wins shouldn't matter but minutes do and unfortunately Kuemper is too far behind in that regard. The only hope is that Hellebuyck's annual meltdown shows up 2 weeks early.

He absolutely deserves a nomination, but yeah this is Hellebuyck's to lose at this point in the season. That can still change though. But there's no shame in losing to an excellent goalie in his prime.

It's unfortunate that Los Angeles isn't a position where they can rest their 36 year old, historically in jury-prone starter down the stretch because a) they are still trying to win the division and b) Rittich has not been reliable this year, to say the least.

Kuemper has only allowed 15 goals in his last 13 starts. If he keeps that run going and LA wins their second division title ever, well, now we have a narrative going and this is a closer race.

Hellebuyck has played 20 more games and for some reason behind Logan Stanley way too much so yea he's gonna win again.
59 - 46 doesn't equal 20....but yeah, I don't see Keumper having much of a chance winning. That said, this is the reason I don't see much of an argument for Hellebuyck for Hart either....it's not like his stats have dominated the competition and on top of that his team is near the top in offense.

I mean sure, but that doesn't make it not a shit comparison. Elliott's low GP were because he's an unreliable goalie. Keumper's GP is low because of injuries

I'm a huge Kuemper fan - probably one of the few Avs fans who still wears his Kuemper sweater regularly around here.

When it comes to Vezina voting, games played is important.

I also think the statement you're commenting was made tongue in cheek anyhow, yet we're spending time discussing it.

It's funny because I'm the opposite, I wasn't a huge Kuemper fan (although he's the best goalie LA's had since Quick, and I'm very impressed with him this year).

I agree games played is important. But even tongue in cheek that's an egregious comparison that deserves to be called out.

Not sure who told you he doesn't belong in the NHL anymore.
There were several posters who suggested as much in the trade thread last Summer, that he was "so done" and "unplayable" and that LA "might be sending him to the AHL to make room for an actual goalie." I won't name them because we've all been wrong before and there were plenty of wrong predictions about Dubois, as well, but the sentiment that Kuemper wasn't NHL caliber did exist around here.

Hellebuyck's already won it but I'd love to see Darcy get a ton of votes and a 2nd-3rd place finish

And it's certainly not just LA magic, he's been legitimately phenomenal and Rittich has been absolute garbage, I'm not sure I've seen so many low-danger shots go in on a pro goalie at any level

Maybe if Boston's GM gets 15 votes again. Tim Thomas won the vezina playing 57 games one year where the bruins literally rested him against contenders down the stretch. He was significantly behind Price, Luongo, Lundvist, and even Cam Ward in minutes with less wins. His SV% got protected entirely by Rask playing against every contender down the stretch. Every other top goalie was playing 70+ in that period and Thomas only actually started 55 games. 15 game differences in many cases would have absolutely crushed his sv%.

But no, Hellebuyck has it locked.

I think some ppl are eluding a factor that makes this Vezina race closer. Hellebuyck may have 15 more wins than Kuemper, but the Kings don't score a lot of goals. The Jets have the 4th best offense and 2nd best PP, while the Kings have the 18th best offense and 28th for the PP. It's a lot more difficult to be a very good starting goalie, when your goal support is in the bottom half of the league. Wins are more reflection of the team scoring goals to wins games, then the goalie. GAA, SV% and GSAA will be more determining factors.

You can also compare the starter vs the backup to see how much of an influence the goalies are making vs. what the team in front of them is doing.

Helle - 2.04GAA/.924SV%
Comrie - 2.36GAA/.914SV%

Kuemper - 2.03GAA/.922SV%
Rittich - 2.71GAA/.890SV%

There is a pretty clear distinction here.

I am not saying Helle isn't deserving, he is 100% deserving (and will) win. But some people here have no clue what kind of season Kuemper is having.

He's having a "vote down the ballot" season.
