Most definitely this wasn't a great year to make the statement. I felt it was more of a general statement, which I agree with. In the end, he came right out and said the 12 best made it and teams that didn't have nobody to blame but themselves.
The bigger issue is the SEC schedule is no longer predictable. Texas this year is a good example. So you want to continue to schedule well in case you run into a weaker SEC schedule one year.

Saban's response was pretty good I thought.

He said (paraphrasing), if strength of schedule isn't going to be valued as much, teams like Alabama might, in the future, stop scheduling non-conf. games against tough teams as the SEC is tough enough even though those games are great for fans.

He then went on to say that he thought the 12 best teams were in the playoffs and that's what matters, and each team that didn't make it controlled their own destiny, had flaws and bad games that kept them out.

I agree with both of those sentiments.
Yes, we should all feel bad for Alabama because they suffered so much through OOC games against *checks notes*

Mercer, Wisconsin, South Florida and Western Kentucky

Fact of the matter is, the SEC has never scheduled a tough OOC slate. If they play anyone good, they always make sure its either a home game or at a "neutral" site that is in deep SEC territory.

Who said anything about feeling bad for Alabama? I can't stand Alabama.

It was a general statement he made and followed it up with the 12 best teams are in the playoffs and those that didn't make it have nobody to blame but themselves.

Chrispy brought up a good point about the SEC schedule not being predictable.

The only thing that is predictable about the SEC schedule is that they play a bunch of dogshit OOC every year to inflate records, and the very few big matchups they have are either home games or neutral site game in the heart of SEC territory, or a rivalry game that they politically cannot get out of.

I'm seeing a lot of whining from the SEC over this the last 24 hours or so and it just makes me laugh. Alabama is a 3 loss team who had their season implode due to multiple losses within the conference to 6-6 teams. They should have never been in the discussion to begin with. Hell, using the exact same arguments as last year, Georgia should have dropped to the bottom of the ranking, only in because they won the SEC, because they lost their QB and looked completely inept without him. They're still getting preferential treatment because of the conference they are in, and yet that's not good enough. They want 5 teams in every year, f*** the rest, and now I'm already seeing that they're going to try and strip the auto-bids away from less 'deserving' conferences, or at the very least try to eliminate the Bye for the top conference champions. Which, f*** all the way off at that point.

As far as OOC schedules go, of the big boy SEC schools Georgia at least is willing to do actual home and homes with teams. They've done it with Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Notre Dame, Colorado, and Clemson. They were supposed to this season and last season with Oklahoma but since the Sooners joined the SEC, they had to scramble to find another opponent.

I know Alabama did travel to Penn State once but I also seem to recall they asked Michigan State to play them in Atlanta vs Lansing and Sparty told them to get f***ed.

Top story on ESPN.com right now:

Belichick on Tar Heels coaching job: "we'll see"

I want this so bad. Let the ACC devolve into complete insanity for its remaining time on this earth.

Next October:

Joe Gigolo: "do you have any comment on the rumors that Tom Brady will be hired as QB coach after today's loss to Liberty?"

Belichick:"we're on to wake forest"

(Edit: autocorrect "fixed" Giglio's name and I ain't mad at it)
