He was plenty ready after breaking records last season so i wouldn't worry about that.Id rather see Mathews ready for the playoffs than going all out for reg season records.
With due respect his game 1 record was most goals by a rookie in his debut. (Probably a few things. Points by a player in debut. Goals by a rookie in one game. Might be fastest first goal among others)Since Day 1 Auston Matthews has been setting records be it the franchise record for goals by a rookie with 40
Or last year when he scored 60 to break the franchise record for goals with 60, a record I'm not sure he can't break again.
But the record I'm talking about is the record for points in a season.
Currently held by Gilmour at 127 I think Matthews could do it, after watching him 60 last year I put nothing past him.
I think he'd have to play at least 79 games to do it but I think he's good enough to do it.
Why can't it be both?I care more about can Matthews score the big goals when they are needed in the playoffs and not about him just adding more personal awards/records
He can have everything. His line is the best in the world. Totally dominant and carries the team disproportionally. Of course the tut tutters around here need to be miserable and find fault with a line that cannot be matched by any team. Why can't it be both?
That Sittler record isn't just a franchise record, it's a league record that has held up for nearly 50 years. If it survived Gretzky and Lemieux in those high scoring eras it's tough to imagine anyone doing it now... even if Sam Gagne got disturbingly close in that freak occurance of a game. He'll break his own goal record but the one I'd love to see is Sittlers 10 point game. Have to think Mitch gas a better shot at that one but who knows?

Math is a funny thing. If you have a big enough sample anything can happen. That Sittler record isn't just a franchise record, it's a league record that has held up for nearly 50 years. I predict that if Matthews stays healthy - this will be his best year when he looks back at his entire career (stats wise).
He was on pace for 119 last year so 127 is obviously within reach.
Especially since the Leafs still keep getting screwed with PP time - if hengot as much PP time as MacKinnon or Ovechkin he's easily have been at a 127pt pace last year already.
He could possibly set another goal scoring record(if ever there was a time, its right now as he's absolutely peaking....) but he won't break 127. He doesn't get enough assists. Maybe something like 62 & 48, for 110 pts.

Because 10 points is mostly about assists. I'm fine with either doing it though. He basically just had this in 73 and playing with a hurt wrist some games though. He definitely is capable of 120 or more in a full peak season.
Why would Mitch have a better shot? Matthews has been the consistently better point producer so far.

Its not a wish, if he scores 50 in the reg but 20 in the playoffs?you got your wish he's doing shit all in the reg season
He's gonna have to go on a real tear to get there now.
