that's a relief. Glad he cleared.

Berube was waived. Maybe he would have been an AHL option. Not sure how he did since the Isles claimed him. Another project possibly.

Campbell, Petersen, Zatkoff, and Kuemper backing up Quick. What would they do with Berube? Assign him to a rec league as an emergency backup?

I was commenting on if Campbell had been claimed. Then we would have had only Zatkoff and Petersen. Which would mean really only Petersen in the AHL.

Ah, I thought you meant in addition to Campbell.

Every team had similar players/goalies passing through waivers. It's rare to find a hidden gem (like the Panthers did when they plucked Ray Whitney away from the Edmonton Oilers).

Especially when it comes to inexperienced goalies who have never appeared in a single NHL game.

Go to any team board and the same posts are up, people worried about losing marginal guys and 99% of the time the player goes unclaimed.

Teams aren't going to make a roster shake-up to bring in a guy who is almost 26 and has 2 NHL games under his belt.

Most players that hit waivers don't get claimed. Losing Berube wasn't the problem, it was Bartosak committing a crime. At least they had Petersen there as a 2nd option.

I don't know. His loss was a big blow to the depth, especially when Lombardi traded Jones, he'd have been a good backup to Quick or at least the top guy in Ontario. He showed all the signs of being a very good goalie under our development team.

Berube was pretty average. He was a .910ish goalie at AHL level. He was never destined for an NHL career until Islanders for some reason wanted to tank their team. Bartosak on the other hand had some real upside until he screwed up his own career.

As for claiming players off waivers for AHL depth...that's not how they work. If Kings had lost Campbell to waivers let's say, and then claimed Berube to be a #3, well he'd have had to clear waivers again to be in AHL. In that case he simply would have been claimed back by Chicago who would be able to send him down at that point without waivers (provided no one else put in a claim). Clearly Chicago signed him for that role so obviously they would have claimed back. You can't use waivers to put players in AHL in 99.9% of cases.

An additional blow to the depth, because Bartosak then also committed a crime. Berube was claimed before the whole Bartosak thing happened. Jones was gone one way or another. Quick/Enroth/Bartosak/Budaj would've been ok in 15-16. Then you let Enroth go, and Bartosak becomes the backup. But Bartosak wasn't there, and Quick went down in the 1st game, and then they were left with Budaj and Zatkoff, with Campbell trying to get his career back on track.

In addition to everything else with this team, the goaltending has been in a state of flux for a couple years as well. In 13-14 and 14-15, the only goalies to play in the NHL or AHL were Quick, Jones, Scrivens, Berube, Bartosak, and Niederberger. In the 2 years since, they've gone through Quick, Budaj, Campbell, Zatkoff, Enroth, Bishop, Houser, Flinn, Lindback, Emery, and Imoo.
