Player Discussion Calvin Pickard

Apparently the average playoff save percentage is .893 in these playoffs according to StatMuse so Pickard is at least really close to average at .891? I mean people said we only need league average goaltending to win it all...

I'm more impressed that he has a better GSAx and GSAx per 60 than Vasi, Ullmark, Adin Hill, and Hellbuyck... I think he'll only get better as the playoffs go on and he gains more confidence.

Yup. Tending these playoffs has been pretty bad.

The only teams winning off their goalies is Dallas and Wpg

Big difference for me between Pickard and Skinner is my butthole doesn't clench hard enough to cut diamonds when a medium danger shot gets through on Pickard.

And the players absolutely feel this too. Has to be completely demoralizing to feel like no matter what you do, the clinically depressed mess in your net will likely just give it all away anyways.

Difference between a goalie that is going to give his all no matter what letting in a goal, vs a goalie that very visibly sags and sees his effort level fall off the map letting in a goal is huge for the skaters. Add in avoiding taking ownership of his own game, talks about what everyone else needs to do better except for himself etc... I would guess these are strategies for him to try to protect what tiny speck of fragile confidence remains, but this is also a drain on the rest of the group.

Keep working your butt off in the net no matter what is happening, stay positive, and be at least slightly above average. That's all this team really needs. Way too often Skinner is falling into doing 0/3 of these. He can do 3/3 for very short amounts of time. Pickard's baseline is 2/3.

100%. The Oilers would have lost Game 2 for sure if Skinner was in net. This is the first time in a while that the Oilers have a reliable goalie in Pickard.
