Keefe was quoted post game that Matthews asked for a continued look with Calle as his winger yesterday.

Wasn't Bunting on the other wing?

Seemed like he was with JT and Marner while Kerfoot with Matthews and Jarnkrok, but either way, I don’t read that as Matthews throwing Bunting under the bus at all

I don't recall, I guess it was Kerfoot then?

I think it's just a joke.

Very solid signing. If Bunting wants big money and term I'd rather just use Jarnkrok in the top six next year.
Jarnkrok having continued success on the Matthews wing will continue to have an impact on Bunting's UFA ask.

Either Bunting lowers his re-signing demands because he recognizes the opportunity here and he likes being here, or the Leafs recognize that they don't need to pay him more than their apetite, or at all, and he hits the Market as a UFA. The only chance I see is lower cost, but at longer term with the Leafs.

Considering that we really need to re-sign ROR and Acciari, plus explore what we can sign/trade to solidify RHD, I think Jarnkrok is now making Bunting expendable. Add to it that we should have Robertson and Knies pushing for a LW position at training camp, and it feels an awful lot like Bunting's time here is winding down.....

After a tough start, he really was finding his game before getting hurt, and hasn't lost it really since returning. He's basically what we want Kerfoot to be except Jankrok can actually finish his chances, with maybe less defensive play.

why does islanders fans like engvall so far??
It's probably because Islander fans don't have this odd expectation of Engvall to be like Eric Lindros just because he's big and ripped to shreds. Engvall certainly had his warts but he's a bottom 6 player for a reason. What Bottom 6 player is gonna be perfect?

Engvall is a guy who fills multiple useful roles on most teams but has his shortcomings just like most guys at the bottom of the lineup. Leaf fans for some odd reason singled him out as a whipping boy. A lot of people don't appreciate him for what he was and instead seethed in anger that he wasn't what they wanted him to be.

Engvall:

- 7th round pick that was in our system for five years before making the team and we were able to turn him into a 3rd rounder. That's a win. A 7th round pick into an everyday player for a few years and get a 3rd rounder from him, who's complaining?
- He was really good at transitioning from one zone to another with possession of the puck. People underrate how important this is but the best scoring chances come off clean zone entries. Yes, there's a time to dump and chase but a lot of bottom six guys can do this well. Not a lot of bottom six guys can do clean zone entries consistently.
- He has a decent enough of a shot on the powerplay that he's playable in a pinch or if we're injured. No, he can't stand in front of the net and tip pucks in ala JVR but there's value in being threatening from medium to long distance.
- Good PK guy.
- People always discount his 3 points in last year's playoffs because they came on empty net goals but there's usually a reason why players like him are in 5v6 situations. Engvall was a good defensive player.
- He's also on pace for another 15-20 goal year with around 40 points despite minimal PP time and no time with any of the top four forwards.

A lot of you guys are spoiled from the years with Kadri, JVR, Bozak and Komarov on our 3rd lines when you could have them pot 25-30 goals and get 50-60 points. That's not the average.

Jarnkrok looked pretty good alongside Matthews and he’s got a sneaky good shot. I wouldn’t mind seeing Nylander playing alongside those two.

Jarnkrok - Matthews - Nylander

Aren't they playing him top 6? But yeah I agree the most frustration we had with him was what we wished he couldve been instead of appreciating who he was. But with the disclaimer that we really needed more jam in bottom 6 with our set up and he just wasn't providing that. Personally I also found him to disappear and not engage often which obviously is a problem.....I just wanted him to up his compete level. Appreciated who he was, but we needed more.

re thread: Jankrok is a damn pleasant surprise. Totally agree that the beneficial effects on Buntings ask is also sweet

I liked the signing as soon as it was announced, I thought he was gonna get something like 3x3 in UFA, was pleasantly surprised with the contract.

Played through injury early on but solid and consistent in contributing to the team.

I really thought him coming on at a reasonable AAV would have meant Kerfoot was leaving.

He started off slow but as really picked it up offensively of late. Defensively he’s been good. When the leafs signed him I always thought he was the Kerfoot replacement.
