It's pretty much already been said. The overall whining/complaining about anything and everything about this team and the significant drop in quality of most discussions is the biggest reason (i.e. every single thread after a loss).

I think something that has to do with driving posters away is that there are too much rules.

Also, this...

Because I feel like all my efforts to influence the board to stay more "even keeled" is like a golf shot in the water... it's basically getting worse.

And I'm seriously annoyed by the heavy biases, the agendas, the abuse of hyperbole, the ridiculous paranoia, the dishonesty, the disingenuousity, the name calling/bashing and disrespect of hockey players, etc.

I still post but it's hanging by a thread these days. I'm still here because there's still a handful of great posters. If some of them quit, I'll end up doing the same.

hang in there, i really appreciate reading your posts.

Been posting since 2007 (has it already been 8 years???), and this year my post count has dropped considerably. I don't know if it's a mix of not having much to talk about (team losing, ownership, etc) and personal life getting busier. The drop in posts has been noticeable and unfortunately, it seems the like forums best days are behind us.

Uh, no offense right back at you but, that's actually been kind of the problem. There are many young posters here who don't even know what punctuation and sentence structure are, and not enough of the "vets" who used to put actual thought into their posts.

I'm still around here though despite what is often kindergarten-level discourse. It's probably more due to having no kids and working from home. I have to distract myself and sports are usually it. I just hope Melnyk gets his **** together, makes the team competitive again, and the quality posters return so I don't get whiplash from shaking my head at half the posts on this board.

P.S.: I enjoy your sense of humour, so none of that was directed at you. ;)

Haha all good man. When I said youth movement I didn't mean just getting kids in here I meant this board just seems to have no sense of humour. I enjoy an intelligent discussion about the team and the game. However to be honest it seems when an intelligent conversation is going on not everyone is invited into the discussion.

Frustration and anger for me. I am just so fed up with this team. The Murray's have ruined this franchise and created a culture of losing. They took a perrenial playoff team coming off a Stanley Cup run and ran it into a perrenial bottom feeder - with no signs that things are ever going to improve.

I am so tired of watching this team lose over and over and over again - and nothing being done about it. When your GM says "We have a playoff team" when clearly EVERYONE knows it is not a playoff team, then your GM has lived past his expiration date.

Plus, I am sick of all the lies and BS. Since the offseason Murray has been promising us some kind of trade or move to help this team. Everytime he gets in front of the mic its the same BS lie. All season long we have been waiting for a move to be made and nothing.

I can't wait until this franchise rids itself of the Murrays. Only then will we have a chance at changing the losing culture they gave us, into a franchise that has the chops to win again.

Who are all the other Murrays?

I blame the lack of funny posters who could also talk some hockey as well. Oh and people who are intelligent, that helps too.

2004-2008 was the golden age of HFSens, the attitude era if you will. Now we are like the final days of WCW.

Also, to speak on a couple points:
1) The reason for sometimes trying to moderate discussions from one thread to another is that way we can actually try to encourage discussion on a specific topic. Sometimes if a topic gets too broad in scope, the argument becomes cyclical because you get away from the topic at hand and then eventually it comes back around to what was first discussed... but nothing new is generated... yet the discussion continues because it feels new again. So it just prolongs a dead discussion.
2) You should never fear having an opinion. While we don't typically discuss the how's or why's that certain posters are no long with us, let's just say that the ones I know of were not for hockey related opinions.
3) The rules are something we can't do much about it's set down from above and we try to work within them to encourage the discussion as best we can. You have to remember as well, for some reason this particular board goes through mods I think faster than most, and so most of us are still getting the hang of our newfound abilities and trying not to go mad with power.
4) I do think recently we've had a bit of an improvement in discussions, though the GDTs themselves have been a bit slow. I'm also wondering if the slowness of GDTs isn't because of the increased reliance on streams and how out of sync everyone is. When I'm moderating a GDT for example, I end up finding out what's about to happen before it comes through on GCL all the time since that's the only way I can watch games. So then I have to decide whether I just do cleanup every 5 or 10 minutes, or just end up having the game spoiled on me for every major event :P If it wasn't for the fact I'm moderating I'd likely stay out of the GDT and pop in only on period breaks. Nothing to do with the board itself, just the fact I want to enjoy the game first and foremost.

I think something that has to do with driving posters away is that there are too much rules. For example you are talking about Melynk's finances in a thread about what went wrong, you get your post deleted and told to post in another thread, I don't know this place just seems so restrictive at times, you can't even post I hope player X gets a nice clean hit from Neil anymore without getting in trouble. This is a game where you can hear swearing, and see blood on the ice, but the forum to discuss such is so rated E for everyone when it should be rated PG/T .

I feel like conversation just doesn't get to flow as free as it should.

Of course I am an active poster and disliked by the majority of this board, but I feel I should say something that might help out with the experience.

This is a big thing for HF(not sens specific). I always tell people how good HFboards is, than they get back to me about how sensitive it is here. Half the heated discussion include words or phrases that would be allowed on primetime TV get edited out and/or deleted which either halts the hot topic in its tracks or confuses everyone.

We're rabid hockey fans on a forum with golf/tennis like rules. That's a big problem. Rivalries can't be rivalries. Case and point, "******" gets censored. That's ridiculous.

If you're wondering what I said, I misspelled "respect".

" don't start controversial topics or posts about your rival on the main boards or on their board"

"Hmm, why is it so quiet here?"

Maybe because every other message board thrives on rival fans going at it...and we ban it, unless it's done in a golf/tennis-like way.

You're not allowed to say Rags for Rangers either. It's just as bad as a racial slur I'm pretty sure.

Agreed on all counts. That word getting banned on the SENS board says it all. I also remember getting a warning for using the word "rags" when speaking of the Rangers.

I think a lot of forums like this are being hurt by ******. ****** hockey has GDT's and team sections and rules are pretty open.

Well hf is blocking me from telling you truth! Down with censorship!!!!

To me, a hockey forum should allow "omg you're so stupid!" in a heated debate as its very PG and is heard everywhere.

If a poster starts using expletives and crazy vulgar language bullying a poster, by all means infract/ban them, but stop deleting or editing anyPG thing that can be seen as insulting. Its political correctness overboard that drives people insane here. You cant get in a single heated debate without getting infracted once or thrice and having features locked. Very frustrating.

I make a distinction between things that make me take a break, and things that make me come here less often.

When I start to get frustrated to the point where it is a struggle to stay civil I take a time out and leave the board for a few days. I cant control how others behave, but I do have expectations for my own behavior. Plus being that frustrated isn't fun anyway, so it is better to just do other things.

I come here less often now for a few reasons. First off, I am frustrated with the direction of the team in general as well as their messaging. I get a headache from the sheer amount of cognitive dissonance that I experience when I hear things like "we'll spend when we get better." That is sort of like telling your boss that you'll work harder only after you get that promotion. And don't even get me started with the talk of being competitive for a playoff spot as a bottom spending team. These things take a lot of the joy out of being a fan, because talk is cheap and the product is suffering.

As for these boards more specifically, I do think the discussion has gone downhill a bit. There are always going to be people on sports boards who get really emotional and reactive. However, what has happened is that there seem to be fewer really solid posters bothering with this place anymore. It is hard to tell exactly how it all played out, but I think all of the continual crap talk around Spezza last season really took a toll, and when he just up and left (via requesting a trade) so did many posters. Believe what you will, but a lot of people link him wanting to leave with the treatment he received at the hands of Sens fans in places like this.

I still like this place, but I don't have the urge to come here and post most days anymore. This is especially true with post-game stuff, which is often a tire fire.

I'm too apathetic to write a long post so I'll just quote someone who wrote what I was thinking.

Also all the girls left. What's the point of posting when people like moz, Liliaceae and SilverCup aren't here to be impressed. :sarcasm:

I concur, there should be an HF after dark like the movie network at 11PM we can swear and talk about lady parts.

Rags for Rangers I believe is mainly an HFNYR item and maybe a main board issue, because of it's colloquial use.
Same thing with Scabs for Habs.
And Laughs for Leafs.

You can't really do that on the home boards, the idea is that there supposed to be a 'safe haven' for fans to post in with other like minded individuals. Not an adversarial them vs us constant battle.

Also for some reason I'm drawing a complete blank on what the censored word you're referring to might be.

Generally though we need to be aware that there are all people of all walks of life using this board and that some items which are used nonchalantly by you may be considered culturally insensitive to others. Which is where the basis for a lot of the rules come from.

I just wanted to point out that our mods on the sens board are pretty good, helpful, and lenient. We're pretty lucky.

Every time you go on the main boards and get in a heated debate, you log back into hf,see the blue at the top right corner and cringe. And its never the thing you thought it would be. Its always something ridiculous that you're like " THAT got me infracted?!"

You shouldn't be on a message board with the feeling "i want to say something but i know it will be a back and forth and i'll get infracted so i wont".

It's annoying reading constant criticism based on knee jerk reactions. Team goes down a goal or a player makes a mistake, the sky is falling where everyone and everything sucks.

There's 29 other teams in the league trying to win and this team is not that bad. Sometimes I wonder if the success this team had up until 2007 created unrealistic expectations and made it seem easy to build a winning team.

If they lose, it's a disgrace, if they win, they're screwing up the draft. When they play well and lose, they're a crappy team, when they play poorly and win they didn't deserve it.

And then there's the cheap owner gibberish. When the time is right, they'll try to get players through FA, but that time is not now.

So when the team loses, it's mostly a waste of time to post or read any of that crap. Constructive criticism is great, whiny people acting like spoiled children is not interesting.

The thing that gets me about the sensitivity part is, why are they watching hockey games if they get offended so easily by words? This is a message forum on a sport where we see violence and blood often. We see guys swearing at each other (an hear it often too) and see guys trying to punch through each others faces. But being called "dumb" or using the word "respect" with "K" etc. is just terrible to see?

Hockey is an aggressive sport. Fans should be allowed to show mild aggression.
