Calgary Flames finish the season tied for 14th overall with 96 points and fail to make the playoffs

Tends to happen more often than one would think when a team misses in one conference, but make it in another conference.

Like a decade, or two ago I think there was a team that missed, but would have been 3rd had they been in the Southeast division and this team was in the East.

Calgary is weak.... the only reason they were in the playoff race is because they were 9-1 against SJ, Chicago and Nashville.

They would be fighting with the Flyers for a top5 pick if they were in the East.
Considering there’s only 4 good teams in the East, I highly doubt it. The other 15 teams there are mushy middle teams that would have missed if they had to go in the west and deal with Colorado, Dallas, Vegas, Winnipeg, LA, Edmonton

Ottawa also just got one point over Calgary, who missed the playoffs...

They aren't even in the same conference. Take it up with Minnesota and ST Louis who ARE in the flames conference and are BEHIND Ottawa in the standings and made the playoffs over Calgary.

Beat them in the standings next time.

CGY did not have a better regulation or coin flip record

MIN - 33 RW, 42 ROW
STL - 32 RW, 40 ROW
CGY - 31 RW, 36 ROW

their ability to force OT, even if they lost it frequently, was the reason they were in the race

Regulation records (treating OT like a tie):

Calgary: 31-27-24 (.524)
Minnesota: 33-30-19 (.518)
St. Louis: 32-30-20 (.512)

You can takeaway from this whatever you want but this is what I meant. By win percentage, that's the best regulation record. It's also perfectly fair to say that they played the Blues three times and I think lost all three games so, in that sense, they only have themselves to blame for not finishing ahead of them.

4? You believe Florida is a bad team?

The strength is pretty much even, 6 solid team in the west and 5 in the east.

You must have missed all the post earlier that the East have a better record against the West..

What an odd thread. Play 82 games and demand a game 83 tiebreaker.lol.

I followed flames at end. Really curious how klapka does next season. His small sample size at the end was damn good.

Sure, and Calgary's 96 points weren't good enough in the West, either.

In what world do the Flames deserve to make the playoffs?

Just because they're really good at losing in overtime/shootouts doesn't mean they deserve to make the playoffs.

I think the argument is that most season 96 points is enough to make the playoffs

This is a fallacy as they would’ve played different teams a different amount of times, and the three bottom teams on the west provided the most “gimmie” points by far.
Exactly my thoughts, people need to stop seeing unfairness everywhere.

Some seasons you need 100, some you need 89. A lot of it is determined by how many bad teams there are. If the worst teams are Winning 40% of their games, it’s less wins for everyone else. If the worst teams are winning 25% and 30% of their games, it means more wins for everyone else.

Day late and a dollar short, truly this organization's spiritual identity. Team needed one f***ing break to get in and I really don't think they got a single one this season. It always went against them.

Is what it is, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. The guys played their guts out and as a fan that was endearing. I'm not too broken up over not getting in, although they had been playing their best hockey of the year recently. Would have been great to get the young guys some experience but they're not there yet as far as being a real threat to go deep. Lots to look forward to in the system and I think they'll be finally beating the mid allegations sooner rather than later.

1993 MLB final standings. The Giants won 103 games and missed the playoffs.

I’m sorry but the idea that the flames “deserved” to make the playoffs is ridiculous. They got exactly what their record merited - no more, no less.

Calgary fans can find solace in the fact they have a budding franchise goalie locked in the foreseeable future…Wolf is f***ing legit. Without him the flames would’ve been WELL outside the playoff picture this year.

worst team in the East (Boston) had 76 points.

4 teams in the west with 76 or fewer and the bottom 3 had 68, 61, and f***in 52 points

Exactly, The West had more teams at the top and bottom. On paper Calgary is unlucky but who knows how they would have done if strength of schedule is waited into this.

Kinda harsh that Calgary finished with a better regulation record than both the Blues and Wild, but they got torpedoed by a poor record in the coin flips (10-14 in OT/SO) while St. Louis was 12-8 and Minnesota was 12-7.
Fake news

If CGY got 34 points in OT/SO, STL 32, Minn 31

It would be impossible for CGY to have a better regulation record and yet not make the playoffs
