Calgary Flames finish the season tied for 14th overall with 96 points and fail to make the playoffs

Calgary's 27 regulation losses were also tied for the 7th fewest overall. Not bad for a team in Year 1 of a "rebuild."

This team absolutely deserved to make the playoffs.

Keep your filthy non-playoff team out of the Stanley Cup playoff section.

I can’t tell if you’re joking but Calgary are loser point merchants who went 10-14 after regulation and are 4th in the league in shootout wins. Bad teams have lots of loser points because they are bad. The top 8 teams in loser points (you) missed playoffs.

4-0 vs San Jose Sharks.

The reason East has fewer points is because there are fewer points pinyatas out there. East's record vs the West is actually in East's favor.

Also, Flames were 5-2 in shootouts.

They are 15th...show me the standings in which they are 14th?

But to the topic, what is this even about?
It's often that not the best 16 are in the playoffs...when you look at the loser points they shouldn't even be near a playoff spot.

Calgary played admirably this season, for a team that was supposed to falter after having lost some important players.

Good for them. They also don't have their first pick this year, so there was no incentive to tank (although they would have retained it if they were bottom 10, but that would lead, if I remember correctly, to giving up the next one unprotected, which could have been a worse situation for them.

Sure, and Calgary's 96 points weren't good enough in the West, either.

In what world do the Flames deserve to make the playoffs?

Just because they're really good at losing in overtime/shootouts doesn't mean they deserve to make the playoffs.
I get what you're saying, but I've venture a guess that 96 points gets a team into the playoffs way, way more often than not. So, deserves? Maybe not. But man, it must blow to miss the playoffs when you're damn near a 100 pt team.

I think the OP is advocating an NBA style play-in for whenever there is a deserving team left out.

I would support having a short best-of-3 play-ins between the WC teams and the next 2, to avoid such oddities. Basically, this year :

St. Louis vs Calgary
Minnesota vs Vancouver
Ottawa (but it should be NJ actually) vs Detroit
Montreal vs Columbus

This would be wrapped in 5 days while the other teams rest.

No. Ottawa was 6th and 2 points from 4th in the conference...they shouldn't be playing in a play in.

Don’t know how much I agree with the 30th ranked offense deserving to be there, though I was pulling for them

27 losses without the 14 times they lost in overtime/shootout. If they did not go 5-12 in overtime they then would of made the playoffs.
