Calgary Flames finish the season tied for 14th overall with 96 points and fail to make the playoffs

This exact situation happened with the Habs in 2019. Finished with 96 points, beating out 2 playoffs teams in the West, but finished 2 points behind Columbus for WC2. It was the highest point total ever for a team missing the playoffs. Calgary just tied it.
Montreal tied it too, the Panthers missed with 96 in 2018

As a Flames' fan, you win some and you lose some. Hell of a season playing right on the margins all year long, and being one of the best teams since the 4Nations break. Just came within a hair of making the playoffs, and that truly sucks. Just a bounce here, or a different decision on a 50/50 video review there may have been enough to just edge out the Blues.

Hey, Blues went on a hell of a run. It isn't like they don't deserve to be there. WIld clung on desperately to their spot, so you can't take it away from them either. You could say that there were 9 deserving teams this year, but there is only 8 spots. That's why they have the tie-breakers.

I don't really think that the "West vs East" argument holds much water. The West competes with the West for those spots, and vice versa. It is what it is. Everyone knows that these thing can happen.

As a Flames fan, all I can say is that this was one unexpectedly enjoyable season. No idea what happens next season, but this was a fun ride! Sucks it ended, but that's life. I am curious. They had the ability to surprise a few teams - they have been playing playoff hockey since the 1st game of the season. Vegas would probably have crushed them as they just seem to have Calgary's number. Every other team they probably would have put up a fight at least, but with the right match-up, they MIGHT have squeaked by a team. They play hard, and have a surprising amount of grit now and resilience. Not an easy match-up this year for anyone (unless you are Vegas as mentioned.. sigh).

Best 8 teams made it to the playoffs in the west. Flames missed out by a hair, but those are the rules and I don't think they need to be changed. Congratulations to those teams finishing ahead of Calgary and good luck to you all.

So the Flames got as many points as you could get without making the playoffs and therefore likely having the lowest draft pick amongst all non-playoff teams. Very Calgary Flames of them.

And I don't think they are going to improve next year as most of their core is 30+ and had big years and due for some regression.

OTL merchants. Wolf kept them in many games they had no business being in. Flames had so many opportunities to have enough points to get a WC spot, but fell a bit short. Amazing they almost made the playoffs given preseason expectations. Had a lot of fun watching them this season because they played their asses off and Wolf emerged as a stud goalie.

Worst possible outcome. They can’t even tank right. Just stay in eternal mediocrity.

Exactly like Detroit at the end of last year. The teams that "deserve" to make the playoffs are the ones that do. The format, tiebreakers, etc. are all known before the year to every team. Wanted to make it, should've had more regulation wins.

Not bad for a team in Year 1 of a "rebuild."

Nice. You guys were just a smidgeon off. Just trade a pick or two and some prospects and you guys will make it next season guaran-damn-teed.

I would support having a short best-of-3 play-ins between the WC teams and the next 2, to avoid such oddities.

This would be wrapped in 5 days while the other teams rest.

Sure. Let's just award the Cup in July.
