As I said, I'd rate the AJHL a good step below the USHL as far as junior A leagues are concerned. There's not a whole lot of players that got drafted from there that ended up making it. Dany Heatley played there but he had a full season with the University of Wisconsin when he got drafted, he was a lot more proven.

Well my opinion is only based on a couple games from the junior A tournament plus tonight's game, so I'm no expert on the guy. The skating looked comparable to me, it's definitely his best attribute. His shot looked ok I'd say, nothing special but he's more of a playmaker to begin with.

Jaden Schwartz did a year of SJHL and the USHL before he went 12th for a more recent guy.

Joe Colbourne the Bruins took right out of the AJHL.

It's a shame Hockey Canada has morons running the WJC team. At the very least Maker should have made that team and everyone would have a lot more answers.

I think I would choose Junior A + NCAA over major junior, to be honest. It's a pretty rational decision these days.

I'm surprised we aren't seeing more players take this route, especially with how good the USHL has become, just to get a chance to play pro (AHL) at 18/19. Hypothetically finish your ELC at 20 instead of at 22.

Better development for a lot of players and potentially a lot more career earnings.

Less intense playing schedule, more time for individual development, more options once you do get drafted. It's the less direct route to the NHL but that might be a smart idea for some prospects.

Being a former student-athlete myself ( In football though so a bit of a different situation admittedly ), I can definitely vouch for the merits of getting a good diploma while practicing the sport you love. The chances of making a living out of it are so damn slim, especially factored in with the potential for long lasting injuries. You might as well make the most of it.
