Calder Watch : 2024-25 Season

Speaking of reality, time to inject some. Here's all the players ranked by points

Suzuki 89
Caulfield 70
Hutson 66

Celebrini 63
Eklund 58
Toffoli 54

Slafkovsky 51
Smith 45
Gallagher 38
Evans 36

Wennberg 35

There is literally no valid argument saying that Celebrini's supporting cast is better than Montreal's
I like how you erased Zetterlund who by pace outscored every Habs forward except Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. Or Granlund who did the same. Walman the same. As if them being traded erases their contributions beforehand.

Pretty much any non-Montreal fan thinks celebrini will be the best rookie longterm

This wouldn’t even be a discussion if celebrini was playing with #1C Suzuki or even caufield etc.

Sure Hutson could end up as a Hughes type player but a quality #1C is at worst going to be similar value.

Not sure why we can’t support both players and count our blessings that we get to watch an unbelievable crop of rookies this year. Unfortunately it seems like winning the Calder isn’t enough for some fans, they need to bring down celebrini and especially michkov because their team fumbled their lottery pick.
Im a Habs fan and I think long term Celebrini is better. However....I wouldn't bet against Hutson.

Walman and Zetterlund haven't been Sharks for a month and a half. Granlund hasn't been a Sharks for two and a half months.

Nice try though.

He also didn’t include Laine, Josh Anderson, Newhook… all 15+ goal scorers.

I almost forgot how much Habs fans love clinging to their new shiny toy. If you think Hutson will have a better career or had less to work with then that’s your right I guess. None of it matters on the ice.

Newhook put up 28 points playing second line + PP all year. lol. The Habs having consistency in their lineup doesn't mean the supporting cast was better. Look at points per game. Newhook would have been 14th on the Sharks.

Truth is Nick Suzuki > Celebrini and then second to ninth place the Sharks win every head to head points per game matchup except for Lane Hutson > Eklund. Who had a higher scoring fourth line is irrelevant to Celebrini's number. Celebrini only gets on the ice with top 6 players. If Heinemen-Evans-Armia were his fourth line, Celebrini would have exactly 0 more points. And the Sharks top 6 beat the Habs in points per game head to head everywhere except 1C.

None one is arguing who will be better.

The whole notion that Celebrini did more with less is false. Hutson was the better, more impactful player, on a starting team that equally bad. Lane Hutson is the reason the Habs moved from 15th in the east to 8th. Mike Grier is the reason the Sharks finished so low. If you swap Hutson and Celebrini the Habs don't make the playoffs. He simply had the better rookie season.

No, so your schtick can switch to how biased the league is against Buffalo instead of in favour of Montreal.
My schtick? I made a f***ing joke dude, based on the moroinic Montreal reporter than left Iginla off the Hart ballot and gave Theodore the win.

And awards votes literally have nothing to do with "the league" it's reporters and half of them aren't fit to vote.

He wouldn’t have because Grier wouldn’t have brought him up during this season. It’s been explained ad nauseam to the point where if you don’t get that then the problem is 100% your unwillingness to understand.
But that is simply an insanely ridiculous take. The idea that a guy who finishes the season with 66 pts as a dmen would not have made any other team in the league because of a stubborn gm is just… bonkers.

No GM is that stupid

Celebrini will almost certainly be the better player in the long term; but based on their in-season performance I think Hutson just edges Wolf for Calder followed by Celebrini.

I mean Theodore was on 58 ballots while Iginla was on 61, seems like there were more people moronically leaving Theodore off the Hart ballot than Iginla

Grier has done his very best, and has succeeded, in building the worst team in the league for 2 years straight so the idea of him being resistant to adding a youngster that could dramatically improve his team tracks.

No team actively trying to lose as many games as they can, like this years sharks, would want an impact player like hutson in the lineup.

Griers mandate was to ice a terrible team and he succeeded

This all of course has zero bearing on hutsons ability to play on a team that is less than the generational superpower team that this years habs are.

Gotta give this one to Celebrini. Hutson is just on a 60 game heater, he’ll come back to earth. Right HF?
You can tell that’s what people thought and still think.

Its very telling that a defenseman held the rookie scoring lead for pretty much the entirety of 2025 yet up to maybe 2 weeks ago people still wanted to believe so badly that he wasn’t the runaway favourite
