Calder Watch : 2024-25 Season

In terms of rookie defenseman seasons Hutson's likely having the best one in league history. Close to the record but Larry Murphy played in the highest scoring era with a 135 point center and two other 100+ point players on his team. For points % Hutson is the GOAT rookie season; absolutely deserving of the word generational for an individual season. It doesn't mean Hutson is generational, but he is arguably having the best rookie dman season in league history.

Since generations are only 15 years typically, and no one has been this good since the 80s, it's basically triple generational. I guess we can call him Triple H(utson). He is the game and he is that damn good. You know?

If you'd made any points i wouldn't of mocked them. All you did was use semantics and be dishonest.

Celebrini being 18 isn't any different than Hutson being 20. Position matters. Once again you're dishonest. Nobody ever compares forwards to defensemen's developing curves 1 for 1.

You mean Logan Couture's 48 points rookie season? THAT record?

What's that better team? Habs were dead last in the Atlantic in 2023-2024 without Lane. Now they're in the playoffs. The Sharks were dead last in the Pacific in 2023-2024 without Celebrini and now they're still dead last. How did he "carry" them again when they didn't move at all? I guess carrying a team to last place has it's... merits?

What did you do exactly to paint a good picture of Celebrini besides cling to semantics? Nothing here makes him look any better than Hutson besides his draft pedigree.
Yeah, the “I mocked you because you made no points” defense — right after getting two basic facts wrong.
Celebrini wasn’t “outside the top 60,” he was literally 57th. Not semantics — a correction. Then you confidently claimed Couture’s rookie record was 48 points… it was 56. Two blatant errors, both corrected — and somehow we’re the dishonest ones?

Now you’re moving goalposts. Celebrini leads his team in scoring as an 18-year-old center, playing over 20 minutes a night on a roster held together with duct tape. His goalies are statistically the worst in the league. But sure — let’s pretend dragging that mess forward means nothing because they’re still last. As if hauling a corpse uphill is less impressive than piggybacking a sprinter across the finish line.

Meanwhile, Hutson walks into a hungry, improving Habs core — Caufield, Suzuki, Matheson, Guhle, Slafkovsky — with a healthy roster and the team Canada's goalie Montembault. And we’re acting like he alone lifted them into playoff position?

You keep saying “we can’t compare defensemen and centers,” then immediately compare them and declare one “by far” better. So which is it — apples and oranges, or a race Hutson somehow already won?

This isn’t semantics. It’s a pattern: exaggerate, misquote, shift the argument, then cry dishonesty when the receipts show up.
No one’s denying Hutson’s been phenomenal. But if your case is really that strong, why does it rely so much on fiction?

Might wanna double-check the next “fact” before throwing around “dishonest” again.

Any time you criticize one of these homer's players, they always say: you haven't seen them play. Seriously, I'd say there's at least 40 posts in this thread saying the same thing.

You know a dude is pressed when he posts 3 in a row, and 9 out of 13
Criticism is valid and is backed up by facts. What you’re doing is called lying. You then ignore any posts that refute your false narrative, as well as posts that challenge you to back up your claims. If you post blatantly false BS, you are going to get called on it. That’s how it works.

You're actually right about the points i have no idea what i was looking at before but i was wrong, apologies. My point still kind of stands though, it's not super impressive for forwards.

Why is it so great that he led his team in scoring if the team is as bad as you say? And how did he drag the mess forward if they made litterally zero improvement in the standings since last season?

Yeah, he walked into a team that finished last in the Atlantic with waiver pickup Montembault as a starter, Suzuki, Matheson, Guhle, Slaf, Caufield all in the team. Then when Hutson is added to the recipe, they magically make the playoffs. I know you'll say it means nothing but it all speaks for itself really.

You "can" compare forwards and defensemen. What i said was nobody ever compares them 1:1 production wise. See, that's the dishonesty i was talking about. You knew what i meant.

So what about Hutson's season is fiction?

He gives the puck away a lot, especially in the defensive zone, doesn't block shots, doesn't hit. Just quit the meat riding, please.

I don't know if your talking about Lane Hutson here but...

Hutson : Giveaways so far : 101
Celebrini : Giveaways so far : 102

Hutson : Blocked Shots so far : 120
Celebrini : Blocked Shots so far : 51

Hutson : Hits so far : 39
Celebrini : Hits so far : 34

Soooo I don't know man...

One is a D breaking records and helped a lot bringing his team to a playoff spot most likely and the other well...I agree that Celebrini will be a star in the league and would of taken him without a blink of an eye but hey...who's really meat riding here...

You might say that Lane is 2 years older...So what!?? He's more mature ? Is that what you mean ? Because as far as I know it's both their first complete year in the NHL no ? Age as nothing to do here really.

P.s Sorry if you weren't talking about Hutson so ignore if that's the case.

No heart feelings though!

Cheers! :)

In what world does Hutson gives away the puck a lot in the defensive zone? He's a miracle worker with zone exits, wins 1v1 battles, block shots and break plays. The only thing you're right about is he doesn't hit, you either got him confused with 6'3 Mike Matheson or don't watch him play.

The hilarious thing about this is the narrative is Celebrini is great defensively while the actual stats back up Hutson being an absolute possession force and Celebrini being a turnover machine. More turnovers than Hutson with way less touches and possession time.

But people made up their minds about Lane Hutson after the -5 game in the middle of October and have been shouting lalalalala while covering their ears and eyes since.

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see.

Let's not be silly and compare a top line center to a top line defenseman in blocks and hits, giveaways are difficult to compare without context. Primary play drivers whether F or D end up with a lot of giveaways as they are tasked to make plays with the puck. "Bad giveaways" that are mistakes are not a tracked stat; less skilled linemates can lead to more turnovers for high end playmakers on weak teams.

Don't bother with that poster. All he has been doing is trolling the thread by making up false facts trying to get a rise out of Hab fans. Best to use the ignore button.

Finally this is the update some have been waiting for.

Results were in before last nights game but the 3 finalists is as many have been calling it since early in the new year.

I'm guessing the many who downplayed the ESPN surveys in past months will be gracious with the update.

But didn't you read earlier that has now changed because Cele last game. One more game and Cele could be winning the Hart,

Haven't watched a ton of Wolf this year, but was really impressed by him in the last Sharks-Flames game. His mental game is really strong and he anticipates plays at a very high level. Should be a very good goalie for years to come.
Yeah i love the way wolf moves around the net. Reminds me of a young tuukka rask. I was just being funny saying he’s not my kind of goalie because he’s not tall. That would be a really dumb thing to say

He leads Celebrini by 2 points in more games played. The season isn't quite over.
The season has 4 or 5 meaningless games left for both teams. For all intents and purposes it, and the calder race are over. We can revisit in June for I told you so's if you want.

like i said before
Hutson would win the calder this year even if celebrini finishes the season with 85 points (in less games, while being 18) Context matters

Do you know if they still make public how each sportswriter casts their ballot?

I don’t know
There was some information to be gleaned from the espn article where voters gave their opinions

Some snips:

Hutson is leading the Calder Trophy race -- and it's an absolute blowout according to the ballots we surveyed.

"Toughest choice among all the awards, but both his play and impact on his team has been ridiculous," a voter proclaimed. "Will probably get some Norris love."

"Hutson has not only been the best rookie, he has been one of the league's most impactful defensemen down the stretch," another voter added.

"No offense to Macklin Celebrini or Matvei Michkov, but Hutson played in meaningful games and neither of them did," a voter explained

"The amount of points Hutson has put up this season is one thing, but the kid has also elevated his play whenever the games started to mean more," another opined. "The Canadiens have been one of the hottest teams in the league over the past few weeks and Hutson was a big reason why."

"Lane Hutson cemented himself as my probable No. 1 choice with his performance down the stretch, and his defensive improvement over the course of the year," another Hutson backer quipped. "I still think Celebrini was the best first-year player I saw this season though."

I'm betting that the Canadian writers are voting enmass for the player on a Canadian team. Given the political tensions Trump has stirred up.
