Calder Watch : 2024-25 Season

Hutson has been the objective favorite for about 2-3 weeks now, ever since his play stepped up even more after the 4 nations break, and since the NHL came out with their limited poll showing Hutson in first with "69 points" and Celebrini a close second with "66 points" based on journalist polling. Vegas has since moved the line to validate this.

Yeah, since the date of that poll, Hutson has had 15 points in 14 games including back-to-back games of 3 points against the defending Stanley Cup champions in winning efforts in which he looked to be the best player on the ice for both teams. This final stretch really locked the award up for him.

Agreed but that being said the people saying that it's not even close are being pretty optimistic as what Wolf and Celebrini are doing with their team situations is extremely impressive as well.

Some of the voters are going to look and see that their situations as a #1 center and top goalie compared to Hutson who is a #2 Dman and think long and hard about more than points...or maybe not we will find out.

Hutson leads the entire league in plus minus since the four nations break, is third among every d in the league in points going back to being promoted to pp1, is second for all dmen in assists and 8th in the entire NHL in assists, and plays more es minutes than most 1D. Where do you get 2d from? He plays more minutes than Hughes and Makar did as rookies. The only reason he's at 23 minutes instead of 30 is because the Habs are shorthanded a lot. The Habs have a gluttony of pk specialist defensemen, it would be completely illogical to put Hutson there.

Low end 1c/1b c and middle of the pack goalie don't compare to what will end as the second highest scoring defenseman rookie season in history.

At this point Hutson has to be the favourite to win especially if the Habs are in the playoffs (and it looks like they will be).

Forget the playoffs, kid is on the cusp of beating two Larry Murphy rookie records (assists and ES points). There's absolutely no other narrative that beats that. As soon as Hutson reached the top 10 all time rookie D, his betting odds skyrocketed in the -1000s. It's a done deal.

You guys can't help yourselves 😂

I thought it was Celebrini's for the majority of the early season, but in the last few months I've been fully on board Hutson and Wolf and the two main contenders. Wolf has done everything in his power to get Calgary into the playoffs, and I think if they had made it I'd lean towards him. But, you can't deny what Hutson has done and his impact on the Habs making (most likely) the playoffs.

Barring something catastrophic in the final week, it's Hutsons this year.

Hutson should win the Calder, but I don’t understand dismissing what Celebrini and Wolf have done. They’ve been fantastic with less help than Hutson. Hell the Habs could use those exact two kind of players

From total minutes obviously, other dmen on the Habs are doing the defensive heavy lifting and Hutson is playing with the top unit alot and on the PP.

sure he is the frontrunner and many voters will look at the easy counting stats stuff but other will have also made impressions from watching what Celebrini and Wolf are doing

That's great but neither player is in the calder race this year and this is something only quite biased people will bring up in argument.

How often has a rookie like Celebrini scored like he has while providing strong 200 foot play with an extremely weak back end in terms of puck moving is an interesting point yet very few sharks fans bring it up.

Maybe most sharks fans know and understand the calder voting process than the vocal minority of Habs fans?

No one is playing 30 minutes per game on the back end and he is being compared to other Dmen in the league in TOI and playing 2nd pairing MPG with excellent usage and results on the PP which will probably propel him to the win.

My point is that the 2 other finalists also have their strong points too, right?

That's neither here or there as Hutson just isn't a good PK option in the NHL right now and voters understand usage to some degree.

And Hutson should buy Laine a beer for coming back and scoring 15 PPG and propelling him in the race with celebrini if he wins which is probable at this point.

Your last sentence here is really underselling exactly how great both Wolf and celebrini have been.

Celebrini is bring the same offensive impact (with a much better 2 way game and eye test of that impact) as Bedard last year who won the Calder over a better all around rookie Dman performance by Faber and Wolf is also having more impact on the flames than any other rookie in the league but he is a goalie so that hurts him in the Calder race.
One is an elite player at their position, age is just gravy. The others are elite for their age. Celebrini isn't a top 10 center now. Wolf isn't a top 10 goalie now.
Hutson isn't a top 10 NHL dman, maybe a top 10 Fantasy Dman and he won't be a top 5 guy next year either.

Maybe just stick to Calder talk here you are starting to embarrass yourself.

Hutson's already a top 10 dman. He'll be top 5 next year.

Congrats Montreal was right about Hutson. How many times have they been wrong about their prospects?

Do you see how annoying it is if someone pointed out every time Montreal was wrong? Posts like yours contribute nothing to this thread.

Can we go back to discussing Hutson’s amazing season instead of making cringe posts like yours?

It’s way too early to say that Slaf instead of Cooley was a mistake.

We are allowed to have different opinions, that’s what makes this forum so great.

Cringe posts like “He'S nOt GoOd DeFeNsIVeLy” contribute absolutely nothing to discussions yet it seems to be a common response when habs fans discuss hutson

There are definitely some great habs fans that provide quality insight on Hutson. But it’s so hard to find those posts when i have to keep scrolling past cringe posts.

I don't see your point here? Im still drafting Slafkovski ahead of Cooley right now.

Reinbacher is still unknown so who knows if MM will be better.

KK was a bad pick by Bergevin that 1 I agree.

As a Nuck fan I have to say it is Hutson's to lose right now and I enjoy watching dmen like Hughes, Makar, and now Hutson skate with the puck and break ankles. I mean, you have the best hockey players in the world and having these 3 make them look like beer leaguers lol. The Norris race next year will be exciting to watch as you have Hughes, Makar, Hutson, Werenski and Sanderson all young and in their primes. I also think there are young dmen like LaCombe, L. Hughes, maybe Pellika all coming up.

Hutson for Calder this year and maybe Wolf if he gets Calgary in or if Celebrini goes on a tear.

Cheers
