Calder Watch : 2024-25 Season

Maybe take a look at your fan base's behavior in this thread throughout the year? You're also a shining example of it. Haha bad faith. Sure bud. 15 points is notable and I never said otherwise. A lot. That is is debatable.
15 points is massive in a league that has prarity. Its the difference between 4th worst and a playoff team.

That is significant, massive, bohemith improvement. And not possible without Calder champ Lane Hutson!

Thanks again for highlighting this with the points differential. It really is illuminating. You are my hero! :)

Okay, we get it. Montreal went from bottom of the barrel (Sharks/Hawks level) to the playoffs. Hutson deserves the Norris for carrying this AHL squad on his back.

I love them all. They are a fantastic crop of rookies. Lane obviously ran away with it but the runner up is close.

But they still played Celebrini and Smith. Guess why? Because they were ready and all the others werent. You really think they wouldnt let their best d prospect simmer in the AHL, risking his development just to get a better draft pick?

Are you suggesting that Hutson would’ve made the sharks TOO good and that is why he wouldn’t have made the team? 😭
The Sharks had the highest scoring D in the AHL for much of the season in Luca Cagnoni, and he got 6 NHL games largely due to being an injury call-up. I know you THINK you have an insightful perspective, but you need to look no further back than this season to see how the Sharks handled their best AHL D prospect. The NHL D was so bad the team generally decided not to throw the youngsters to the wolves.

Again, you can't really compare a guy who may be on the verge of NHL ready with a guy who's a thriving top pair defenseman that put up the most assists ever for a rookie defenseman.

One of them different teams may or may not opt to play him depending on whether he can be insulated (a fine development strategy).

The other you would be actively hampering by playing on the 3rd pairing, let alone in the AHL.

“Bottom 5” for the Habs last year was 76 points and 15 points out of a playoff spot. They were 24 points and 29 points clear of the Hawks and Sharks respectively. Closer to the playoffs than bottom 2. Yet people keep hanging on to the “bottom 5” language. They improved 15 points this year and squeaked into the playoffs in game 82. Solid improvement of 7.5 wins but not some historical feat.
Who is going to win the Calder? Oh, that’s right. Lane Hutson haha. Deal with it.

Ah yes, hutsons equal. Luca cagnoni.

Habs left their best center prospect, michael hage to play college hockey. So ya know maybe celebrini doesn’t play in the show with Montreal because we don’t want to rush him

If you really believe that you can compare Hutson to Luca Cagnoni, you have to idea what you are talking about. I don't know why everyone seems to believe that Hutson is somehow just a product of his environment and that any small and offensive minded D would've performed like him in his position. The fact is that he is the primary play driver on his team and just reached a record number of assists for a D. His talent level his miles ahead of Luca Cagnoni, Seamus Casey, Olen Zellweger or any other small D you can think of.

Do you think that we could compare Michkov or Celebrini to the top scoring prospect in the AHL? No, absolutely not, because the reality is that the top scoring AHL guy probably gets 20 points in a full NHL season, not 66.

Pretty much. I like Cagnoni a lot, but he couldn't match Hutson's NHL PPG in the AHL.

I don't have anything against Sharks fans or Celebrini (obviously), but to say that Hutson would have started in the AHL because a guy like Cagnoni did rather than comparing him to guys like Celebrini and Smith betrays a lack of understanding that Hutson is in that tier of talent. He's a thriving top pairing dman, just as Celebrini is a thriving first line forward.

If Hutson was a Sharks 100% Celebrini would have petitioned to have Hutson on the team, Celebrini has praised him a lot. Hutson helped him win the Hobey Baker.

You gotta be kidding me. Your fanbase's bad faith has been oozing out of this thread.

15 points is barely "notable" when you compare a forward with a defenseman? That's the difference between Cale Makar and Travis Konecny litterally. Ask Colorado how they feel about a trade?

If this were Football San Jose fans would be saying that our Defensive End's 10 touchdowns is barely any better than their Wide Receiver's 8 touchdowns. You guys are wild.

Habs fans overhyped a bunch of busts with passion in the past but this really ain't it.

I'm not sure how to phrase this exactly but I think you might need help bro. Forget about the "bad faith" talk.

Firstly, I never used the term barely. I said notable. Regardless, we were referring to 15 points in the standings for the Habs. As in 91 points this year vs. 76 points from last year. You seemed to have gone on some tangent on points for players and forwards vs. defenseman (I'm guessing in the context of Celebrini vs. Hutson?) which is completely irrelevant to what we were discussing. I have no idea idea how you jumped from points in the standings to points in terms of goals/assists. It is literally one of the wildest jumps in logic I've seen.

There is zero doubt that Hutson would have started for any team in the NHL.

Last year, when Hutson arrived and played his 2 NHL games. Yes, he had hype prior due to his two seasons in college but there were a lot of detractors claiming his game would never translate to the NHL. That doubt was instantly removed after these 2 games played. The Habs players were not just impressed they were in awe of his way of generating offense. So much it got all the other players excited for next season with Suzuki at the top of his fan club and praising him to other NHL players around the league during his offseason preparation. This is not just a normal occurence, these players have seen a lot of other talented coming in over their career.

Forward to the training camp, it was again made obvious after a couple intra squad games that these 2 NHL games he played were not just a purple patch. The guy is the real deal and there would be mutiny within the habs players if he would have been sent down to the AHL. It was not only apparent to the fanbase but also to the media and even more obvious to the Habs players that Hutson is special. This guy need to start, he can generate offense on his own. So he did start the year and it was not all perfect, he was bullied defensively and many (in the media/analytic/other fanbase were quick to point that out) started to question if he was not rushed to the NHL and maybe he should learn defense in the AHL. The first two months of the season the habs struggled, they were destined to have another top 5 pick.

As things looked very bad for the Habs one player started showing significant improvement and it was Hutson, he was always good offensively but he started making less mistake, he adjusted his positioning defensively and the habs started playing better but they were still too far for a playoff spot.

After the 4 nations tournament happened, the Habs were poised to become seller at the trade deadline but suddenly the Habs caught fire and were propelled by the excellence of their captain and Hutson to go on winning streaks and by trade deadline there were now in a playoff hunt and Suzuki had to tell Hughes to not sell any of the current players they believed they could make the playoff and then they followed on that great trend and reached the playoff. And Hutson had a huge role in that.

Hutson is not only significantly gifted offensively he is also very dedicated in becoming a complete defenseman. He beat all odds to become the Habs best defenseman and now by breaking NHL records for best rookie defenseman. He is not normal, not all small offensive defenseman can play and improve like he did. This is not normal.
