Larkin has played much of this preseason with Pulkkinen and Bertuzzi? Where are all these all star caliber Larkin is apparently playing with coming from?

there were 14 other players picked ahead of larkin why is nylander your only comparison.

Larkin has scored more goals than Nylander, yes. If that's your definition of outplaying.

In what area has Larkin not been better than Nylander? That's a better question. One is about to be an NHL star on a team with so much depth it's a problem, the other will be working on his game in the AHL after being cut from a team lacking depth.

Nylander has been cut? thats news to me.

Optically Larkin looks better defensively cuz he engages physically but Nylander has also been strong at blocking passing lanes, stripping pucks and very very strong at zone exits and entries.
Also offensively Nylander has been as good but hasn't had the skilled players to finish off his set ups. He has also created many chances.

Larkin has outplayed Nylander in preseason. No?

No. Considering the state of the teams, Nylander would have most likely been just as effective probably even more so than Larkin if they switched teams. Why don't you measure the % of goals each player was in on for their respective teams, that would probably be a more even comparison.

Don't mistake being cut with not being good enough. Nylander this preseason has looked like one of the team's better players already and appears to be NHL ready. But the long term thinking on the Leaf's behalf it to send William back to the AHL and play the entire year as a center and develop further in a safer environment then the mess of a season that lays ahead for the blue and white. It's been the plan all along and I thought everyone knew this (Although some leafs fans have always maintained hope he would stick around for some reason even though it was pretty clear before camp even began what the plan was). I think Larkin is going to be a stud, I am happy to have heard that if it weren't for Nylander and Ehlers on the board with their pick, the next player the Leaf's scouting staff really liked was in fact Larkin. They are two equally talented players in two very different situations.

Nylanders playing style doesn't translate to the NHL easily since he really likes to hold on to the puck. To be able to do that regularly at the NHL level he needs more strength and even more explosiveness. Im confident his game will translate sooner or later though, and at that point he will become a high scoring player. But it will probably take a few more years before we see his full potential realized.

Yes that's the definition of out playing

Uh, not really. Matt Beleskey had more goals than Henrik Sedin but I'm pretty sure Sedin outplayed him. So no, scoring more goals is not the definition of outplaying. What you may have meant was scoring more points is the definition of outplaying, which may make you seem a bit more reasonable.

Probably sooner rather than later, that talent is undeniable. Everywhere he goes he puts up numbers and even his younger brother is looking like a beast. Really hard not to see Nylander as a future star imo

You Leafs fans are going to have to get used to outsiders constantly making comments like "Player X couldn't even crack this pathetic Leafs line-up LOL". It was a constant with Sabres prospects the past couple seasons. Mark Pysyk stands out as a guy who was clearly ready to be a regular last season despite spending all but a few games in the AHL. But, no, everyone wanted to say he sucked because he "couldn't" crack our crappy blueline featuring the likes of Benoit and Meszaros.

Anyone who watched Nylander this preseason can see he's good enough to be a net positive at the NHL level right now, but that's not the only consideration in roster decisions. The Leafs went out of their way to load up on mediocre veterans. That sends a pretty obvious message about their approach to this season. They don't want to force kids into the line-up and perhaps rather prefer to keep them away from the impending disaster.

Yeah we should've played him with all those world class players we have :sarcasm:

At the very least we have Lupul and JVR not asking for world class players, but at least give him players that can do something rather than garbage who is not skilled enough to bury the chances he creates.

Any way my point was that why our prospects has to play with scrubs instead of NHL calibre players? Isn't that bad for development? You don't give them the help they need and then you also want them to be the ones who lead your team, that's awful management.

What does Nylanders younger brother have to do with Nylanders success or lack thereof?
Keith Gretzky would also like to know.

Good post. It really speaks to the naivety of certain posters who refuse to accept the notion that rebuilding teams value player development over the current on ice product.

I was speaking about his talent and if you'd watch them you'd know. There playing style is eerily similar. Maybe you should catch some Steelheads games, its really a treat to watch.

People claim they're sick of Leafs fans bringing up their prospects in other threads? The solution: shove Dylan Larkin down everyone's throats in the Nylander thread. Some of you guys are no better than the Leafs fans you whine so much about.

Leafs have scored 16 goals, Nylander has 2 points, thats 12.5%.
Wings have scored 31 goals, Larkin has 4 points, thats 12.9%.

Pretty similar.
