C Vasiliy Ponomaryov (2020, 53rd, CAR, traded to PIT)

How does he look so far?
Not really impressive stats for potential first rounder

I think, he's doing alright. New country, new hockey (and not just hockey) culture and everything, and he's above PPG as 17 yo. If he plays at WJC U18 and does it well enough, 1st round pick is pretty real.

Since that time his stats became better. But Bourque from his team, who is also 2002 born has 12 points more. I understand that Vasiliy needs some time to adjust.
Anyway, the most important thing is not about points, but how he actually plays and it is interesting to hear something from people who watched him this season.

Bourque scored 0+1 in 5 gp at Hlinka, Ponomarev scored 2+4 in 5 gp at Hlinka, so you may have different arguments about both kids.

With the track record of players of his type, would you pick him in the first round if you were an NHL GM?

I don't know. He can be good for late 1st, but 2nd won't be bad as well. It's hard to make any conclusions about players like him, because of the certain situation, when they change one hockey system and culture for another, and these systems are so radically different, so you just don't have enough facts for analisys.

If he stayed in Russia, it would have been much easier to answer your question.

I think I would, the track record is a little scary but I try to not let past players dictate how I feel about current ones. Every situation is different (even if it feels the same here) and I think he’s playing well enough and shown enough for me to be comfortable selecting him in the 1st round, I’m thinking late first? Somewhere around 25 at this point.

Watched him today, was a total no show, they keep playing him center when he wont be one at the next level... At this point, expect a major drop, probably late 2nd... Bourque and Bourgault have been easily better than him since he joined the Cats...

The only reason to justify drafting this kid earlier, is if you think he hasnt fully adjusted to the Q yet and if you think he will be better once he gets moved to wing...

The ninth overall pick in the CHL Import Draft, Shawinigan Cataractes centre Vasili Ponomaryov had a strong rookie season. He scored 18 goals and 31 assists for 49 points in 57 games played before the season was cancelled. Ponmaryov also impressed on the international stage. He scored two goals and four assists for six points in five games at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup. Ponmaryov helped the Russians to the gold medal. Overall he played 12 games with the Russian Under-18 team, scoring four goals and eight assists for 12 points. He also put up one goal and three assists for four points at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge, bringing home another gold medal, Russia’s first-ever in that tournament.

In 2018-19, Ponmaryov played for Krylia Sovetov Moskva in the MHL, Russia’s top junior league. He scored nine goals and 20 assists and 29 points in 37 games. Ponomaryov also scored four goals and four assists for eight points in six games at the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge, winning another gold medal. He was also named to the tournament all-star team. Overall in 23 Under-17 games, he scored nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points.

Excellent work as always, I've got nothing but praise for you guys, and I think your write-ups are some of the most accurate of any public scouting sources out there.

If anything, I think this is one of the kids (with Stranges and Neighbors) I think you guys are a bit too high on. I have him solidly in the third round (Stranges in the fourth, Neighbors in the early third), and there are some really strong prospects that people are sleeping on and deserve to be up there in the second round, guys like Seeley, Blomqvist, and Ovchinnikov (Heineman too, to a lesser extent).

Anyways, reading your draft profiles and rankings is always a joy, so keep it up, and cheers to all of you.

Thanks for the kind words.

Obviously we will all disagree on orders of players, even the NHL teams disagree with each other once you get past the first guy or two, but is good to hear your thoughts as well. I know that at least one of the three you mentioned we have graded in the second round.

I think he takes a big step forward next year. He is one of my favorite forwards prospects not ranked in the 1st round. I think he has the tools to develop as a center, and I like him better than most of the center prospects ranked in the 30-60 range in this draft.

I watched him alot and I dont see him as a center at the next level personally, I think he would benefit from being moved to wings with less responsabilities on his shoulders... I think he could be a nice gamble to take late 2nd early third round cause he remains skilled...
