Johansen vs Kuznetsov then.

Podkolzin easily has the 3rd highest ceiling in the draft.

What is with these weird comparisons? Johansen vs Tarasenko? Now Johansen vs Kuznetsov?

Have you even seen Zegras play? Johansen? LOL.

The concept of "ceiling" is subjective but it's funny to say a guy whose offensive upside is his biggest question mark has the 3rd highest ceiling. And I say that as a Podkolzin fan.

It works out for both teams anyways, Vancouver already has Petterssen & Horvat at Center, Vancouver getting a winger is good for them, Anaheim getting a Center is good for them.

Of all the players in this draft who might’ve been underutilized, I think Zegras is #1 in this category. He excelled when he was given a top 6 center role, but for two years at the NTDP, he didn’t get that role even half of the time.

Park this guy at BU for two years, let him be the minutes leader, and I think he’ll dominate. High potential and probably underrated by most due to the role he played. He was done no favors when he was used as a winger, and he didn’t get enough ice time and good enough line-mates when used as a 3C.

Agreed. On pure skill, he's a #1 overall potential type of player. He needs to improve his consistency but I think that's more a by product of the usage you highlighted - he'd go from the #3C with average wingers to out of position on the wing with Hughes or on the wing with Turcotte and back and again in various combinations.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave BU after 1 year but I think the 2 year development path is ideal. While Zegras is highly skilled, he also has a decent frame as he's a bit over 6 feet tall. It's not out of the realm that he'll leave BU around 6'1 and 185 pounds or so. He'd only need to put on 12 pounds and grow slightly (1/2 - 3/4 inches) in 2 years for that to happen and with less games in the NCAA, the weight gain should be easy.

Haha, I think most (many?) Canuck fans would have preferred Zegras. Tradesies?

I mean big bonus with Zegras is him potentially contributing in the next 2 years and C option but Podkolzin can easily be as good as Svechnikov. If he was coming over this fall he's the #3 draft pick

Edmonton were the ones who really got screwed and Detroit to a lesser extent. Though the Miller trade is pretty awful for you guys considering guys that bring roughly what he does are available in FA for the same price or cheaper

Any idea why Dach and cozens were picked prior? Most of what I’ve read seems there’s a consensus that Zegras is the better if the three

You will never know, there is not just one clear cut reason why. Handedness, size, play style could all play a consideration why he was taken after Dach and Cozens. It would be a combination of several factors.

Dach is just the complete package of size and skill that every team in the league covets as their 1C. Guys that size with his hands and skating dont come around very often.

Cozens was a different type of player than what they have. They might view Mittelstadt as similar to Zegras and they already have their franchise offensive player locked in. Cozens can be that Ryan O'Reilly type the Sabres need. Also, as much as HF has started hating him Cozens is a damn good player in his own right. Not crazy by any means he went ahead of Zegras.

Podkolzin to me is very far from Svechnikov as a prospect, not to take anything away from him.

Size and goal scoring potential are the two most obvious reasons IMO. On the other hand, Zegras will take a 20 goal scoring winger and make him a 30 goal scoring winger. Reminds me of a Craig Janney type but with better skating.

Is MHL scoring worth twice as much as OHL scoring now, or...?

Could he have a rookie season like Keller, Connor, or Boeser? Does BU look to have a strong team next year?

He could have that type of season with or without a good team, but I think they’ll be better next season. They have a lot of depth on defense and their forward line, but look a little weak in goal.
