The kid needs to continue in the Pros. Hate to see him send back to the OHL. I think that 1 game a week plan in the NHL might be good option. Are they still thinking about no contact for the OHL season?

Yeah, when he decides it's on, no one is stopping him. We knew he looked big amongst juniors but he even looks like Eric Lindros (size, not physicality) in the AHL.

Something that big should not be able to toe drag the goalie from in close  He's like my Jeep with good hands

How has he looked? 8 points in 15 games is decent but only 1 goal and has the worst +/- on the team with -15.

It’s looking like Ottawa won the draft.
Yeah no. Stutzle is great but the guy looks like he has never played defense is his life. In 2017 Hischier came bursting on to the scene. Both Pettersson and Makar are better players but they took longer to develop like Byfield will. As for Sanderson, Drysdale is tracking better than him and I still think it was a mistake to reach for a defenseman in weak class. When their were better players on the board.

Funny, you preach time about Byfield but then immediately hails Drysdale as better than Sanderson. Solid logic.

You do realize that you completely contradict your first statement with your second one. I'm of the belief that success in higher leagues out of the gate does count for something and Drysdale should be praised (same with Stutzle), but you are being ridiculous preaching patience for one person then bringing up Drysdale/Sanderson, it's either one or the other you can't pick and choose when to count early production and when not to. It's like when fans hype up the WJC when a prospect does well and then downplay it when another one doesn't (a common thing on this board)

I don't understand why fans trash on other prospects as a way to defend or hype up theirs. I don't know why my fellow Kings fans are so hesitant to give credit to Stutzle credit for his fantastic start, people bring up defense, yeah, he's terrible defensively in the NHL, Byfield is terrible defensively in the AHL, again so what, these are players who haven't asked to play defensive roles at any time in their lives. Montreal and Edmonton fans arguing over Caufield and Holloway, they are both great prospects who had fantastic seasons, one is more well rounded, one is more offensive, but we can't just say both are great?

Next year will be the big year for Byfield, he needs to establish himself as an NHL'er next season with the expectation that he is ready to start really making an impact as a 20 year old, if he keeps that path he will be fine, if he doesn't then we might have a problem.

What? I was legitimately curious how he has looked in the AHL.

It's surprising how big he looks even amongst AHLers.

Still putting it together that's for sure, but when he's on, he's unstoppable, and that's against pro men. Absolute beast when he's got position--but pros are better at this so he's learning. He's got a lot to learn but he's sure soaking it in. Has even had a few mean moments lately, would love to see that part emerge more, standing up for his teammates. The biggest problem is he's an 18 year old in the AHL, his shift to shift and game to game consistency has yet to coalesce.

Can't wait to see how he looks in an NHL tryout before going back to the OHL.

I don't care to indulge the Stutzle parade chest thumping their way through here but without mentioning ability at all it's wild that they're just such DIFFERENT players. Byfield is much more the Anze Kopitar style bulldozer. He's not going to be super deceptive, but my god, when he decides he wants to go somewhere, you're not stopping him.

The problem is Byfield decides to skate into the corner and lose the puck a lot.

Plus the kid has been a turnover machine in the AHL.

Are you even watching him?

Honestly Byfield's in a much better situation than Lafreniere right now, even though the numbers in the AHL probably aren't what everyone expected. There's no pressure on his terrible Ontario Reign team and he can prioritize working on the areas of his game he has to improve. He'll be fine.
