Marner being a high first round pick should make it in the NHL, but there's no guarantees. It will be interesting to see how he transitions into the NHL as there are many 1st rounders that fall by the wayside. I don't think this will happen with Marner as he is very competitive and very coachable. The Leafs will be very patient with him and I don't think you'll see him in the NHL next year. The team philosophy taken from the Red Wings is to let players over ripen rather than take any chances. Marner seems to have a good head on his shoulders and understands that this is a process. Domi spent 4 years in Junior and that is now paying off for him. I think you'll see the same with Marner, but anything is possible. That's what makes this so intriguing.

He's already playing a Harlem Globetrotters style game and succeeding in the OHL right now, another year of building habits like that isn't helpful. He needs to be in a league where the opposing D is going to be on him quickly and aggressively. Pulling off moves like that spin-chip off the boards to himself in his own D-zone against 2 forecheckers isn't useful at the NHL level whatsoever.

The AHL would be ideal next year, but given that it's not an option, sheltered 3rd line NHL minutes are the next best thing. Practicing and working out with pros will be a huge benefit.

I do think it's just crazy how well he's playing and it would be a tough call to send him back another year. You just have to hope he's gotten strong enough that he can manage it in the NHL. Europe is possible, but not sure they'll want to make that kind of move.

The AHL would be nice, but Babcock isn't a bad coach :). I'm sure he can bring Marner along. Besides with Nylander definitely being there next year it's not like it will all be on him. They will have some talent coming up with him.

Nylander looked pretty weak and got pushed off the puck quite easily in his first training camp, now look at him. Was easily one of the best in the preseason.

If Marner strengthens up like Nylander did over the summer, who knows what'll happen

He's going to be our franchise player. Can't wait to see him at the WJC and eventually the Leafs.

Fingers crossed Marner's goes to work over the summer and gains the physicality needed to make the jump next season. If he doesn't, I could see him being put in a Drouin type of situation where he spends the year in and out of the press box. That wouldn't be the worst thing, but certainly not ideal.

Is Marner gone from the line up until after the WJC? also isn't Dvorak getting a WJC camp?

Agreed, but Marner is a valuable asset that the Leafs won't risk until they think he is ready for the NHL, and only if he beats out another top 6 forward on the team. So who is he beating out? I have Nylander, Van Reimsdyk, Bozak, Lupul, Kadri, Komorov all ahead of Marner today. The only way to make room for Marner is with a trade which is very likely.

Don't forget Stamkos too!

He was the best player on the ice along with barzal. Just had his way. His line should have scored more, they missed so many great chances. Point is also a great prospect. Very good game today.

Most of the "smaller guys" were great today. Barzal, Marner, Point, Koency all had strong games.

Point and Marner have great chemistry together, maybe moving Virtanen down with them will get him going

No, the only thing that will get Jake going is a demotion. Anyway Mitchell was very fun to watch tonight, and hope he can keep up this level through the rest of the tournament.

So Canada's World Juniors are over ... I thought Marner had a good showing, would like to see more points but 4-2 isn't bad. He started off a little timid but in the last 2 or 3 games really showed himself well as an offensive force.

One problem: At this point he clearly still needs to get stronger to play in the NHL. Next season though he isn't allowed to play in the AHL and dominating junior for a third year in a row cannot be good for his development either. He pretty much has to make the jump next year

In your head
Didn't have a dominating performance like people had hoped but stepped up when Canada needed someone to carry them

Definitely needs to get stronger - would likely be on his skates more.

He was one of our better players overall. got off to a slow start but was our best player arguably the final 2 games.

Agreed. Early on was forcing things, trying to do too much, but still making a positive impact. Settled in as the tourney went on, and started to play really well, especially against Finland. Was our best player today, and one of our better players in the tourney.

As a prospect, needs to get stronger physically, and needs to learn to pick his spots a little better (similar to Eichel in this regard, forces things too often as he's used to being able to completely dominate the opposition). He's not NHL ready yet, but will get there soon enough, and his upside is obviously very high. Love his skill level, very good hockey IQ despite over-extending himself at times, and competes really hard too all over the ice.

As a Leafs fan i'm happy that Marner showed up in an elimination game. Yes he started slow, yes you could see he was over thinking most of the time and that he didn't shoot enough but he still showed up. Plus he showed more postives than negatives. Going forward he needs to work on his strength.
