What do you think is his realistic ceiling based on his performance this year?

Could it be:
1st line centre?
Top 6?
Top 9?
Mid 6?

I am very intrigued by what people think. He has 21 more points than his nearest teammate. Crazy that he is #3 in the OHL, #2 was our 1st round pick, and #1 is Michael Misa. This could have been touted as the potential undisputed greatest Jets draft ever.

Greentree, He, Walton.

I think it is a bit premature to be trying to make those kinds of assessments. I would like to see him in Jets TC. Mostly, I would like to see him signed.

I agree with Mort. Probably way too early to say for sure. Right now if he becomes an NHL 4th line player I'd be pretty happy. Anything above that is pure gravy.

It's really not premature to be guaging a players ceiling half way through their draft +1. Things can and will change as he gets closer to the NHL but when a player is producing like he is at his size it is pretty clear he has a top 6 ceiling. That's my take anyway.

Fair enough. But that post asked for a "realistic ceiling". Maybe I took that wrong but I took it as meaning probable ceiling. Sure, his ceiling is top 6. I'd like to think he is a gold-plated top 6. But I really can't put a number, high or low, to the probability at this point.

On a weak team he is getting a lot of opportunity. He hasn't maintained it for long. He is listed as a C. Is he playing there? Is he likely to in the NHL?

We have had some pretty favourable reviews from people who have seen him play. We have had some cautions mentioned too, IIRC.

I want to see more before letting my enthusiasm take over. And until he is signed I'm not certain he is ours to get enthusiastic about.

That's a tough one. Both Barlow and He played above him in the Young Stars. So those evaluations were made in camp.

Do the results he (Walton) has had make him a better prospect now?

Definitely would like to see He and Lambert together again. Wherever that is in the lineup.

Seems like Barlow vs Walton still has a long way to go until we know who pans out. Many a great OHL scorer has not gone on to success beyond the Junior level.

There's definitely reason for excitement though. You hope taking the next step is a stepping stone for greater success.

Can anyone think of another Jets prospect who put up 1.7+ points per game in junior in his D+1

Hint 1: not Ehlers (2 points per game)
Hint 2: not Schief (1.3 points per game)

Once you figure it out... understand that it's not meant as a comparison... just a reminder to keep expectations tempered

But that guy was just three apples tall...

I've learned over the years not to become too attached to prospects. Development between ages 16-21 or so is just so uneven and unpredictable, and what pans out at the NHL level is unknowable. Always nice to see the kids do well, you cheer them on and hope for the best, but expect that most will never meet the expectations set by their biggest cheerleaders.

Imo absolutely yes his stats this year do make him the better prospect and it's not close for me.

Things can always change but given their respective trajectories Walton seems like a great bet to be a 2nd/3rd liner. Probably has an outside chance at being a top line guy.

Barlow looks like he is in trouble as an NHL prospect. He is a 1st rounder though so I imagine he will have his chances to prove what I think wrong. He can definitely put the puck in the net.

We got super lucky and our scouts deserve a pat on the back for this one and for Kevin He. Walton didn't just hit the next stepping stone, he took a giant leap. That's always a great sign with big guys like him. Excited to see how he progresses along the way.

All good Mort. If any of us knew what translates well to the NHL and what doesn't, we would be rich. Low expectations are a key to happiness! Lol

Also very wise words.

I think if we are talking ceilings it is absolutely fair to say Walton has top six after his explosion so far this year.

It's not that he is a guarantee or anything. For the exact reason you are referring to is why I am much more tempered expectations on Yager, Lambert, and especially Barlow.

Not all the guys with really high point totals make it. But most of the guys that do make it have really high point totals. Perfetti is so far a good example of this so far in his career.

I think a combo of physical tools and skill is a big part of the projectibility to the NHL, where guys like Petan fall short. Walton seems to have that part gping for him. That makes a difference when comparing him and Kevin He in my view.

What I meant by realistic ceiling is that someone will come out and say... GOAT but its not realistic.
