Prospect Info: C Kieron Walton #187 2024 NHL Draft

I've been thinking for a while that if he's the next one that doesn't want to sign here, some people will have some serious backtracking to do.

Speaking of signing, I see He now has but Walton hasn't. Could there be trouble in paradise?

Makes sense to sign the guy picked earlier in the draft first, no?

Most of his weaknesses are actually things that are easier to fix and his strengths actually indicate he has a much higher floor than one would think. A big guy who still needs to grow into his body and use it effectively is a great sign.

Walton's goal was nice and all, but can we talk about the forward he skates past at the redline who inexplicably turns up the ice away from where the puck is going as soon as Walton skates past him?

F1 decides to skate at Walton? F2 is coming off the boards almost like possibly coming on from a line change, then F3 is skating across the ice towards his bench like he is either coming out of the box to the bench or he is picking a really shitty time for a line change. Once the forwards totally break down you can see the D man go “oh shit” and he tries to start skating backwards but its too little too late.

That is a really nice rush by Walton but the D is about as effective as a group of fighters in an action movies waiting in line to be killed by the solo Marshall arts master.

I noticed he has a similar skill Mario Lemieux and Tage Thompson have which is the reach and ability to puck handle through traffic. I think if we develop him properly he'll become a very special player for us.

I'd be happy if we just had a new power forward like Blake Wheeler, but if we get a Tage Thompson out of Kieran Walton, I'll be more than thrilled. Sorry, I'm trying to keep my expectations in check. I'm just happy they drafted somebody who's six foot six and isn't a complete liability.

Hr didn't skip a season, but I remember hearing a story that after he was drafted, he ducked calls from the Blackhawks so that the wouldn't have to take time off from fishing to go to the development camp

Among U19 players in the OHL, only Misa and Martone have better numbers than Walton (by PPG). So he's outproducing the likes of Greentree and Sennecke. Furthermore, he's been on an insane streak. Got 21 points in his first 18 games (8G, 13A). Since then 32 points in 13 games (11G, 21A), which indicates a potentially massive breakout. Pretty wild.

Walton is 6-foot-6 and skates well for his size, from what I've seen. The end-to-end goal, posted above, shows that he has nice hands too. Fell to the 6th round (187th overall) to the Jets in last summer's draft, largely due to late season struggles and loss of confidence (including 0 points in 9 playoff games with the Wolves). Obviously he stilll has to show that this pace is sustainable and perhaps the opponents will take better notice of him from now on.

Yeah his scoring was okay considering his usage last year, and his size and mobility seem to be the kind of thing that get scouts and GMs feeling all tingly in their pants. Falling to the 6th round seems crazy even without the hindsight.

Yeah Walton's scoring was pretty good all things considered and then ran cold late in the season into the playoffs. I guess scouts saw those late games and didn't think the pieces would come together.
