C Joseph Veleno - Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL (2018, 30th, DET)

The Sea Dogs have the worst offense in the Q. If you want to pin that on Veleno, be my guest. But consider this -- he's accounted for about 35% of their offense this season. Zadina on a better Halifax team is slightly higher at 39%. Wahlstrom has accounted for 37% of the U18 offense, Farabee a notch below at 29%. Akil Thomas about 31%.

Only one forward in the entire QMJHL -- double overager Peter Abbandonato -- has more assists than Veleno.

I no longer have Veleno as a top 5/10 prospect but he has the talent and a chance to be better than he’s shown. He almost always looks good when I view him but leaves me wanting just a little bit more. I wouldn’t hesitate to take him top 15-20. He’s going to be an NHLer and I think he can be quite good at his role, it’s just a matter of what his role is and I think that’s up for debate depending on how you view him.

I'm a bit late to the party here...but why did this kid get exceptional status? It doesn't sound like he was ever in the McDavid/Crosby kind of tier to earn it. Why put a target on his back like that, if he wasn't going to live up to that lofty status?

Exceptional status is granted if the player is good enough to play in the CHL and has nothing to do with their NHL potential (in theory) but majority of guys who get it end up being elite. There was other political factors at play with him getting the status, I never thought he should be granted it just because I believe it should be held for the truly exceptional players. He did however prove he was capable of playing as a 15 year old in the Q so he was deserving of the status.

Alot of 15 year olds can hold their own in the CHL it's not about that. Exceptional status should be for someone who can step into their CHL team and be a significant contributor to their team, not just fit in. It's rare to get it because not many 16 year olds can do that much less 15 years old.
 
Play against in midget AAA , He was a very solid player . Very smart , good speed with a big body for a 14 year old . I think it was predictable that it was not a future 1st pick overall , he was very good but in fact he is a january 14th . He's not a exceptional , he is a very solid player but if Joe would have been born 14 days earlier , all our expectations would have changed. It's a story of perception

I’m not disagreeing with how it should be, but the fact is that all a player has to do to get exceptional status is show that he can play in the CHL as a 15 year old and be a producer. It has nothing to do with his NHL future/upside (the two should correlate though). Veleno showed that he deserved exceptional status as a 15 year old, 43 points in 68 games shows that he could more than play at this level. The problem is, that he hasn’t really taken the next step that everyone expected and now he’s viewed as a disappointment because of the tag he has attached to him.

I wouldn’t have given him the Exceptional Player Status but that’s because I reserve it for the best of the best. Every year there are 15 year olds that can play in the CHL, there always will be. He did however show that he was more than deserving as a 15 year old of the tag he got, he just hasn’t progressed as hoped.
 
Traded to Drummondville for 3 first round picks and 2 second round picks.

The package looks heavy, but this is for the rest of this year, next year, and an outside chance of the year after. (He will be 19 then, but with 4 years played in junior is eligible to play in the AHL)

I wouldn’t say it’s that, it’s a team that went heavy last year and are rebuilding.. Cape Breton is a shit show. Saint John is a top notch and well run organization.

I was talking about the team this year not the organization as a whole. Worst offense in the Q
 
I don't think anyone is over-the-moon regarding his production, but the tools are there to be a good player + hopefully he shines for the Volts

Actually, it should be for players which don't belong/completely outclass their piers at lower levels. With that being said, I have no idea why he got it. He must have looked better than his stats made him appear. 1.2 ppg at QMAAA level doesn't seem that impressive. Ekblad had similar stats as a defenceman at that level.
