C Jiri Kulich (2022, 28th, BUF)

Seems like he should eclipse Bergfors for 2nd best scoring total by an 18 year old in the AHL if he keeps on at his recent pace. I'm not sure if he climbs much in the goals/game or points/game categories (6th all time in each thus far) but suffice to say he's having himself a year.

Yes he is, absolute stud. There's an Sabres video at the draft showing Adams & team choosing between Ostlund and Kulich, then after they selected Ostlund they are trying 3 or 4 times to trade up right after to get Kulich but got no takers. They wanted him bad and luckily he fell.

A relatively irrelevant stat since a lot of the best players (CHL prospects) can't play in the AHL until they are 20.

The thing I don't get w Kulich is that he was projected to go around 30th BEFORE he torched the U18s, which is a huge last look before the draft.

How did it not effect his draft positioning?

True, but it's a big sample of non CHL players that played in the AHL that went on to great careers. Lots of Europeans playing in the AHL before hitting the NHL so it is relevant. Pasta, Chytil and Necas come to mind.

Done by age not points and sometimes a little inaccurate but even this crop of non CHL players are all looking to become NHLers and good ones. Kulich leading this group is great!

And not for nothing but Jiricek almost equaling his production but from defense is just amazing. What was in the Czech water/pilsner 18 years ago?

And as a crazy sidenote.. the 1998 born group might be the worst in Czech history and that was the greatest year in Czech hockey.lol Maybe everyone was too busy celebrating to create new Czech hockey playing babies.lol

Only 3 guys made the NHL.. Kristian Reichel, Libor Hajek and Joseph Korenar.. not one in the NHL today.

How do Czechs explain the dip?

My understanding is that youth hockey crashed when the government stopped paying for it in the 1990s. Has it recovered as the country has gotten wealthier, at least among wealthier families? That's the way it is in Canada, hockey is turning into a rich kid's sport.

Few factors

Hockey was free in communism and switching models is not good for the economy or sports

Our clubs owners and management are corrupt, stupid and sometimes both

We are not as wealthy as the others

Are we recovered? Arrows are up but we are not there.. few guys bust or get injured and we're toast.

I do think it's getting better though... slowly but no Russia too so we are having more success. A lot of our best prospects are now D and we have a lot of goalies everywhere... so that is great! Just not sure if any D will take off and we need 6 and we definitely don't have 6. Jiricek comes but now Gudas is old. Svozil becomes great but goodbye Rutta. Here comes Tomas Hamara, where did Simek go? You get the idea.
