C Jay O'Brien - Charlotte Checkers, AHL (2018, 19th, PHI released)

Shouldn’t he be putting up gretzky numbers at this point? There is a 16-year-old with more points than him. Worst draft pick of the decade.

The problem with tracking a late 99 at this point in Jr. A/NCAA route is that even when he goes to college people are going to have to actually watch him play to say anything meaningful, stat-watching is really next-level useless. If he's a point-per-game as a 21 year old in D1 next fall that tells you nothing.

13 games - 8g -14a - 22 points -

like others have said, pretty deep team, only O'Brien, Weight and Sillinger at/above ppg...

still a long way to go but he needs to keep this up the entire season. also Cade Webber playing for them as well, a lot of US kids decided to play here along with Amonte..

Undrafted children of amonte, neidermeyer, sillinger, Stu Barnes, Doug weight...lol it's kinda hilarious. Altho I guess penticton is a fun place to party during the summer??

And then almost 20 year old 1st rounder still playing in the BCHL??? Lol why the heck???

That team makes me feel old.

Doug Weight, Tony Amonte, Scott Neidermayer, Stu Barnes and Mike Sillinger have sons on it.

Surely must be some sort of record. Looks like a bunch of NHL 19 generated draft prospects.

Any update on this guy? 1.44 PPG in the BCHL as a 1999 born player doesn’t seem too impressive.

It's 3rd best PPG in the league and the 2 above him play on the same line. 4th best PPG in the league is 1.26.

Have not watched but he recently came back after missing over a month with a broken foot. Some who has watched posted that he has looked great and looked like a man among boys and could be getting way more points every night.

Reality is, next year will determine where he really is in development. That will be the a truer indication. The "good" news for the Flyers, is if they don't like what they see out of him the next 2 years, they don't sign him and re-coup a 2nd rounder for him.

So at worst, he develops and looks good....or they cut their losses and re-invest in another high prospect...though not as high. Could be worse results.

As a Flyers fan I have no expectations that he’ll even be a decent ahl contributor. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong. Awful pick by us but you can never blame a team for “going for the fences”, especially since he was Philadelphia’s 2nd first round pick in 2018.

Very questionable pick when they selected him. He was a overager playing in prep hockey against kids 4 years younger and putting up big numbers as he should have. That’s the risk when selecting a prep player vs a proven Player playing higher levels.

Jay O'Brien completed up a solid 76-point season with Penticton Vees (BCHL). After a mid-season leg injury in early December, he finished up very well over the last 13 regular season games and playoffs.

Before injury: 33 GP, 15 G, 32 A, 47 pts (1.42 ppg)
After injury: 18 GP, 15 G, 14 A, 29 pts (1.61 ppg)

That he got better after injury was big, considering his history at Providence last season. And best news of all: a concussion-free season.

Whether he is sent to NCAA or AHL this fall, he should be arriving healthy and confident.

It's hard not to pull for him at this point.

At this point the Flyers should just sign him and put him in the AHL and see if he can actually stay healthy and play - its time.
