NJ is as weak as it gets currently. He throws away the puck too often but still I'd say his numbers have far more to do with team context than individual ability relative to other No. 1's.

Agree with this, it seriously hinders his ability to be effective at even strength. With space on the PP he's showing some elite playmaking skill. Given the year, and probably Cory Schneider's career, are shot I think Devils fans are coming around to auctioning off Hall at the deadline and preparing for next season. I'm ok with Hughes taking chances and doing what he needs to develop if that's the case, he's capable of doing things no one else on the ice is and those skills need to be developed.

Makar and Dach are so hot right now

10 points!

The general consensus was that because of Hughes’ size (and point-wise weaker WC performance) it would take couple of seasons for Hughes to reach his potential. So isn’t that exactly what we are seeing. I’m happy with a 0,5pts/game rookie season if that’s the starting point. Right now Hughes’ point total is the least of the worries for Devils fans, everyone is under achieving and nobody is scoring at their expected rate.

Even though the general consensus amongst scouts, analysts, and level-headed fans was that Jack Hughes was not going to be one of the most NHL-ready first overall picks to come into the league, people are still going to have increased expectations for the kid because he was... the first overall pick.

Hopefully NJ develops him the right way, whatever that may be.
Well, the right way would be to take some defensive responsibility off him and play him on the wing. At least for now.

Roll Nico, Zacha, Zajac, Whoever through the middle. They also should have made him EARN his PP time from the jump. Instead they handed significant PP time to him out of the gate and he hasn't look good on it overall. Some flashes here and there, but mostly a ton of losing possession. He is currently too small to be near the front of the net. His shot is currently too weak to be a threat from outside. Of course Jack will improve in these areas and, to be fair, I can criticize the majority of this team for the same shortcomings.

I want the kid to develop the right way....and per usual, the NJ coaching staff isn't putting him in a place to do that.

Jack needs to go on a dirty bulk this summer. I've got some diet tips for him if he needs any.

Here's the icetime amongst forwards in NJ's last game vs. Boston:

1. Zajac
2. Simmonds
3. Coleman
4. Hall (1st in points)
5. Gusev
6. Hischier (T-3rd in points)
7. Zacha
8. Bratt
9. Palmieri (2nd in points)
10. Hughes (T-3rd in points)
11. Wood
12. Hayden

Hall 4th. Palmieri 9th. Hughes 10th.

John Hynes has no idea what he's doing and is getting desperate. Without him the team would be painfully average/below average, but he is driving it into the cellar.
He shelters Hughes match-up wise and doesn't give him any PK time, I don't really think that's the wrong way to be managing him considering they want him to be a center, break him in there carefully. Then he puts out those other lines against the top players who obviously play the most. I did a video on this the other night going through his usage from five games

According to my expert analysis and advanced number crunching, Hughes is a playmaker first and foremost, Kakko is primarily a sniper, and Dach is a well rounded 2-way forward. And they are all equally as good as each other.
If I could like this I would.

But I posted some political crap in another thread, and my liking privileges have been revoked.

J. Hughes reminds me of Teravainen alot. Who also reminds me of Kane, they all have that smooth style and vision where everything just flows. Especially Hughes with his skating.

Hynes has been playing him less the last 3 games or so, he got like 10 minutes in 2 games I think which I don't mind. He isn't getting the puck enough cause he covers so much distance when he is skating without the puck. I feel like if he just stood still sometimes he would get the puck more often. Obviously he shouldn't change his style as his skating without the puck is what makes him great. But the NJ defenders need do a better job of passing it to him cause he can carry the puck to the offensive zone with ease.

Had a 82.61 CF%, 94.41 xGF%, and led Devils forwards in shot contributions tonight.

He was the best player for the Devils tonight, it wasn’t even close. Him not getting on the board was just bad luck.

Points might not be there yet, but that was sort of expected. That being said Hughes has had plenty of moments this season where he's showed why he went 1OA. He's going to be scary good once he gets a bit bigger and stronger.

It can’t be ignored the Devils play a very low event system right now, no one on the team can score goals, the PP is dog shit, and they are near the bottom of the league.

It isn’t really an environment for gawdy numbers unfortunately.

The points won’t come in bunches until they make some changes.

He has looked good though and the talent is clearly there.

Had to scroll to page 8! of the prospects board to find Jack Hughes, the #1 pick in the most recent draft. No activity in 2 weeks. Yeah **** the Devils and everything and they suck but its pretty insulting. Bet if he was on Vancouver or Montreal we would be on part 46 of this thread, even if he only had like 1 point in 20 games.

There isn’t much to talk about. Kid has tons of talent, but the Devils are pure dog shit.

They are playing low event hockey right now. Try to limit chances against at the expense of chances for. Everyone knew defense was not going to be Jack’s strength coming in, so he is obviously going to be limited in that kind of game plan. It is what it is.

Hynes rather lose 2-1 then 6-5 so that means leaning on his checkers more then his skill guys not named Hall. Team ends up losing 5-1 instead, but at least they played “the right way” in his mind

Yup the production hasn't fully gotten there but excluding the first 2 games he is leading the team in CF%, FF%, xGF%, SCF% and 3rd in HDCF%

I'd guess that might have something to do with him having 93.1% offensive zone start %. Next-highest on the team is at 60%.

Well that's where you have to decide if they are protecting him with O zone starts or using him for O zone starts..

Knew this all along from watching his Junior highlights, you could see that his speed, shiftyness and quick edgework would do him wonders in the NHL aswell, the argument that he wouldn't play well vs men was always ridicilous imo, because this aint the 80's anymore, this is what the modern NHL meta is, and Hughes fits in very well. I'm impressed even though i had no doubt in him ever.
"meta" lol, it's funny because it's so true. Speed and skill kills. At least in the regular season
Heard the latest clutch n grab patch will bring it back closer to vanilla build

I know but it shouldn't just be Devils fans in this thread. The NHL world doesn't care about Jack Hughes and its bull****. Its because he doesn't play in Canada or one of the "sexy" teams like Colorado. Same thing with Islanders , they're on a 15 game win streak and nobody could give less of a ****.
He's on a shit team and isn't exactly mcdavid or Crosby level. A lot of first overalls get ignored pretty quickly.

Anyone talking about ekblad, Nugent Hopkins, dahlin much into their seasons? Nope not unless they make some crazy ass play and then it dies down again for Abit
