C Ivan Ryabkin - Muskegon Lumberjacks, USHL (2025 Draft)

Ryabkin is a unicorn mainly because his underlying defensive numbers have actually been good this year. Very atypical for a Russian drafted inside the first round.
In the USHL?

One thing I've noticed in the few highlights and shift-by-shifts on YT is that, at least with Muskegon, he takes faceoffs but assumes winger duties after that. And he's really not all that defensively responsible there either.

Don't matter if he likes to go out partying after midnight or something like that. If the team can get 3-4 seasons out of him on that 60-70 pts pace and then trade to wherever - that's a 1st round slam dunk. Half of the 1st round is a bust party every year.

If there's no better talent left on the board - you take it, period.

Might be the Flames best chance to catch a falling star C at #18. Doubt McQueen or O'Brien make it that far. Like that he plays with some snarl and is built thick. Would be happy with either him or Kindel.

It's not about partying. He didn't look great in the KHL so they sent him to the MHL and he played like he didn't wanna be in the league. Then they sent him to the VHL, and it was the same shit. So they released him from the contract and he moved to NA. I mean, look at Demidov, he was way more advanced in his development in his D season than Ryabkin, and when SKA sent him to the MHL he still showed his skill, won the MVP title and the league and was picked 5OA, and it was huge luck for Montreal.

Ryabkin's attitude was totally different and now instead of top10 or even top5 he's at the very best top20, probably even lower than that.

What an idiot, instead of destroying MHL and solidifying top draft position like Demidov did last season he's destroyed his own chances to become a top pick...
Honestly, who gives a crap if he's drafted in the first or third? That doesn't define who a player is. No one is going to say "What an amazing career for Kaprizov. Too bad he was drafted in the 5th round, otherwise he's be a sure hall of famer"

What's important for him is to just progress. I think too many people focus on "character" issues. These are kids playing in very unique circumstances. They play away from their families with the type of schedule others their age couldn't imagine. They have maturing to do, and they will. While I'm sure it's true that some troubling antecedents may present themselves now, don't think you can project what a person will be based on what they do and the attitudes they have when they're 17.

I was an asshole at 17, and you wouldn't believe what kind of upstanding, exemplary member of society I've become.

He has legit NHL attributes for sure.. Not sure that keeps him in the 1st Round though. He’s the type who usually will go mid-40s because he has 2 NHL skillsets, but needs quite a bit of work on, in his case, the structure of his overall game. What’s crazy is, I’ve seen him 3 times this past season. Twice came away saying Top 20 pick, but the third time he screamed Martin Frk.

Then I put the tape in and he screams more and more Frk, less Barbashev, or even Sharangovich. Not because he’s not physically gifted like Frk, who’s a horrible skater for example. He’s much more gifted with his skating, physical play, the way he thinks the game , etc. It’s because he relies and depends on one part of his game way too much, that he likely won’t develop those other attributes to NHL levels.

So nobody should be too surprised if he goes around 17-23 or 40-45. In this draft, it’s looking like we’re around 17 deep with 3 skill players. Then flip a coin on the next 25 players. Throw in we now have 9-10 teams who don’t even look at Central Scouting rankings anymore, we could have teams that don’t have him Top 100, as they just don’t have time (these days) to play head games with a kid. We see it with more and more teams now. If they’re going to commit to a kids development, that kid better be 100% bought in as well. It’s just too expensive and demanding anymore. Any question marks, they’ll just put a “Do Not Draft” label on him for the first 3 rounds.

His biggest problem is pace. You can watch an entire game and never notice him in transition. He’ll jump off the bench late in transition, sneak into the zone and search for space as Nestrasil for example, is cycling, after doing all of the work. It’s lazy in the minds of many. It’s what you’d see from a 35 year old PP specialist. Then the next game, he’s flying out there. Heavily involved, forechecking, cycling, etc. So he has “it” but “chooses” not to use it far too often. Especially transporting the puck. It’s non-existent at times.

What’s crazy is, this time next year, we may be talking about how he’s going to be playing in the NHL for the 2026-2027 season. It’s all going to depend on where and who he ends up playing for next year. If he goes out west and is lucky enough to land with Prince George, who’s been successful transforming imports, then he’s going to have a really good chance to end up a Top 6 NHLer. My guess is, he ends up in the OHL with Flint, Sarnia or Saginaw and stays in the region he’s been living for the last 5 months now. His agent and the NHL team who drafts him, will help facilitate where he goes. The concern is because of the new 3 import rule in the CHL, every team has a spot for him, and Moose Jaw or Peterborough for example, might randomly take him, because they’re almost certain he’ll report.

The CHL Import Draft isn’t like your normal draft. It’s always been about side deals and placement. Exactly what he needs. There’s just this new rule that could throw a monkey wrench into those plans if his agent isn’t on top of this. We’ll find out July 2. The absolute worst thing he can do, is stay in Muskegon now. They better be careful not using that option as a negotiating tactic. Especially when a team knows they probably won’t have him very long.

Bottom line? If he can commit himself to playing a more structured game, he’s going to have a real good chance to be a very good NHL player because he thinks the game at a very high level, he’ll get his nose dirty, and he has that natural release and shot. He’s gotta buy into it though. If he doesn’t, he’ll be Martin Frk. Not because their skill levels are the same, he blows Frk out of the water with his physical abilities. Once again, I use the comparison because of the dependence on the shot, and the neglect to the rest of his game, because he always goes back to it.

If he goes in the 1st still, my guess is, it’ll be with a contender, who knows it’s going to be boom or bust or Philly because they have those extra picks. There still are some dumb drafting teams though, so you just never know. If a smart team takes him Top 20, it’ll be strange. It would mean they know some positives about his character and commitment, the rest of us don’t. I have had Philadelphia taking him with 23, 30 and now 40 in my last 3 Two Round mocks. He’s been dropping as some of the kids after the U18s rise. Philly has scouted him a ton from what I understand though. So with all those picks they have, I’m guessing that’s who pulls the trigger on him. It’s just when??

Watched a little more of him and I'm starting to warm up to him. There's something there, I like his physicality even if it's very often overboard or seems to come out of frustration on his end. He can hit like a truck when he gets someone lined up. Probably better to be recklessly physical than tissue soft. I might take him in the early-teens if I were an NHL team, depending on interviews and the off-ice testing and stuff. Maybe even getting some info from the coaching staff in Muskegon.

He should probably either stay in the USHL or go to a CHL team that has a really good coaching staff.

And find his way into a top training regimen too. He needs to work on that physique & stamina. There's a player in there just needs someone to focus him & mould him. If they do potential gem if they don't he'll but a Klim Kostin,

I'm curious if his attitude is turning around - I did highlights last year in the MHL and he'd go off celebrating goals by himself and it soured me on him. He'd make a nice assist and then go celebrate like he'd just scored and forget his teammates were there. Seems like nowadays he hypes up his teammates instead which is nice to see. I saw one clip where he almost went to celebrate by himself and turned around and hugged his teammates lol I wonder if someone talked to him about it.

He would even do that with assists lol. But they're really good assists. But he'd celebrate them like he had scored.

You look like clown here. First, I was talking about an U16 tournament, second, I don't understand why are you talking about U16 tournament and how does it relate to the current situation.
No one said anything sbout a u16 tournament though

You just bring that up randomly

Regardless if ur serious, demidov is above michkov and on another galaxy from ryabkin

Ryabkin's attitude has little to do with his celebrations. His problem is a sense of entitlement.
If he's not happy with his situation (team, teammates, etc.) he'll whine, pout, not listen to coaches, etc.
This reportedly stems from the people surrounding him who've given him a big head.....most notably his mother.

Interview with ex-NHLer Slava Kozlov (assistant coach for Dynamo):

Who has wronged Ivan Ryabkin? Why don't coaches trust him?

No one has wronged him. It's simple, he's a talented player but not yet ready for the KHL. He has certain, not so much problems, but qualities that don't allow him to play with KHLers yet.

But he thinks he has no problems.

Well, it's always like that. If you ask most players they'll say the coaches are to blame. You need to look into yourself, reassess and start training properly. He's overweight; and not only do we think this but the national team coaches (U20) do as well. As soon as he starts training properly, goes on a diet, he'll reach new hights. He has qualities that not everyone has, but he's holding himself back.

Is weight the only problem? After all, he played with this weight last year.

And where did he play? The MHL. The transition from juniors to adult hockey is very difficult. Some do not notice it, but for many it becomes a problem. For some it takes little time, and some are never able to transition to the adult level. Many world junior champions just could play (at adult level). That's children's hockey, and here we play like adults.

"You can give me advice, but don't insult me" - This is Ivan Ryabkin's oppinion. Do you think he needs to be treated in a special way?

We treat everyone equally. No one insulted him.

They say that the coaches at Dynamo's MHL team insulted him.

I think that a coach shouldn’t insult players, but anything can happen I suppose. It's a process, you need to get over it and move on. What occured, occured; .and the management should sort it out. This isn’t something he should be offended by. You need to be able to play under pressure, you need to have talent, and you need to prepare. If he wants to play at a high level and has dreams of the NHL, then every game and every practice is under pressure.

You had him for two games (in KHL) but played him for 30 seconds towards the end. I think that's a mockery of the player.

To play a lot, you need to be a top 12 forward. Here (KHL) we have 2 extra roster spots for young guys. In the NHL they only have 12 forwards, 6 defenseman. So there you play. Here it's different (with 14 forwards), either someone gets injured, or you have to be a stronger player, then you'll get playing time.
We give a lot to the youth, they're relaxed. They always think they'll get into the lineup, but this is work. You need to fight, take the opportunity, everything is not for nothing.

I hope Ryabkin will play for you.

I hope so too.

As a regular on the team.

As soon as he reassesses. He has to deserve it.
