Encountered some quite obnoxious posting about him on X.

I hope the kid has a great career just for all the undeserved shit he's taking. Cowan didn't pick or coach TC. He didn't put himself in a role where he was unlikely to succeed.

Thought it was really shitty of TSN to drag him and his teammates in front of their camera as well.

Take it out on Cameron. He deserves the criticism. Leave the kids alone.

Agreed, I really didn't like his tournament as a player, but at the end of the day he's a human being that didn't do anything wrong and doesn't deserve the vitriol. Also, I've seen him in other contexts where he performed well, I still hope he'll have a good NHL career and I'm confident he'll find a role with the leafs sooner rather then later (from a Habs fan).

Why on earth do you think it has to be one or the other? Cameron deserves criticism for his coaching but so do a lot of the players for their poor performance.

Just as a reminder for Leafs fans coming through feeling down, Matthew Knies had two very underwhelming tournaments, when he was a guy that looked to be way more physically developed than other kids, and then more or less immediately stepped into being a full time NHLer. It'll be fine. Cowan especially will do better in a system

Matt Savoie received partial exceptional status, was in the running for 1st overall at one point, 8th overall pick and put up a whomping 1 assist at the World Juniors but don’t remember him being called out as much as Cowan
Some players don't produce but still play a good game, Cowan was a liability and mostly an offense killer

No vision and no Offensive IQ

funny how sensitive leaf fans are about this lol

To be fair, you'd sort of need to be a Leafs fan, I think, to pick up on the sheer amount of vitriol that was being spewed in those game day threads. His play deserved criticism, as did that of many players on the roster, but every time he touched the puck you'd have to scroll through comment after comment saying he's a fraud, should be benched, will fit right in on the leafs, etc. etc. It was a bit excessive.

I just feel bad for the kid, and for all of them for that matter. I'm sure they are probably more critical and disappointed in themselves than anyone else could be. Failure is a miserable feeling, especially at that age.

Sure they do, but see for yourself and tell me if you think the "criticism" is warranted. Here's a sampling.

"easton cowan is an absolute disgrace to the sport of hockey."

"Easton Cowan is a complete f***ing Pejorative Slur."

"I never wanna see this f***ing loser Easton Cowan wear a team Canada jersey again. Holy f***"

I don't care how poorly he played. A 19 year-old kid doing his best in his nation's colors doesn't deserve that abuse. The people posting that garbage should be ashamed.

Don Cherry, years ago, predicted that at then current trends and from his observation, the American hockey program would surpass Canada's in about 20 years.

Slamming Cowan with that world junior team's composition and quality is misplaced. Everybody looked substandard, George excluded.

It's always been a different level of emotional engagement with our world junior team, and to pin a lackluster performance on one kid is unfair. You could go so far as to say, the world juniors are more important to these kids than their league championships and third in importance next to the Stanley Cup, and the Olympic gold medal.

Win as a team, lose as a team.

Easton Cowan led our team in scoring but wasn't in the tournament's Top 30 -- is that on him? Or a sign that the club was either incompetently put together or put together with the best that was available and that what was available is/was substandard?

Cowan is a great example of a player that will do very well in an NHL system but does not have the individual skill to shine in a short tournament like the WJC which has very little structure by its nature (18-19 year olds essentially playing glorified pond hockey). This is why the players with the best individual skill do the best at these tournaments and why HC needs to stop galaxy-braining the team selection.

Cowan will be fine, but counting on him to be the engine behind a WJC team was poorly thought out and doomed to fail from the start. He's not that player and that's not an indictment on him at all. Andrew Cristall is an example of a guy who would have been way better in that role, but still might have a worse NHL career than Cowan because of their respective abilities to play in a structured system. Tomas Jurco was phenomenal at the WJC and then could not hack it at the NHL level when the game got tighter and more structured. Same thing.

It's Twitter. Don't go on Twitter unless you're looking for rage bait.
