Two tips out of the air through screens arent skilled plays? News to me. Sure if its one its a fluke but its the third of the tournament he has scored like that. He also has made no mistake on any of his goals and if he has a chance he rarely misses the net. He's a sniper. Scoring goals however you want it. The versatility in his ability to find the net is what has been so impressive to me.

I know most of his production is on the PP but he is also doing this on the worst line on the team by far and loses shifts to Steenbergen. Mcleod skates himself into trouble and kills the play consistently. The other three centermen can make plays and create room for their linemates kinda the opposite of Mcleod who hangs on to the puck for way too long.

I think being able to go to the net and tip a shot is a skill for sure but no thats not what someone in hockey would call a skilled play I dont think, maybe thats just me though. Al I'm saying is, the production is good but I wouldnt necessarily look at all of his goals and say theyre the type of goals that are going to make him a top 6 player in the NHL. A lot of it is on the PP like you said and are shots being tipped. All of his goals have com against the bottom feeder types of the tournament, I know the Czechs are solid but they havent medalled since 05.

I'm not saying he isnt going to be good, I just think from watching these games and watching him play, I wouldnt use his goal totals in this tourny to get extra excited about him as a prospect. Hes definitely upped his value from a fourth rounder and looks good I'm just saying 6 goals in this tourney is misleading and could lead to higher expectations than he should have.

7 goals, and a team that was in the semi-finals is a bottom feeder now?

Holy shit I'm not saying hes bad, hes a very solid prospect, sorry I'm not sucking him off as hard as some might be but like I said, I think his goal totals in this tourney after watching it are going to raise expectations a little higher than they should be for him. He still has solid top 6 potential, I'm not knocking that but just that the goals he has scored could be very misleading if someone hasnt actually watched the games...

As for bottom feeder, can you read? I literally said the Czechs are solid but they also havent medalled since 05 and Canada blew them out 9-0 and 7-2 in the semis. They arent exactly known as a top calibre team and have basically relied on one hot line all tournament. I'll be interested to see what he does against a strong sweden team tonighy

Well I played CIS Jr A and Jr B and skated with pros every summer. We worked on tip plays like that with traffic all the time its a skilled play. He scored against Finland are they a bottom feeder?

Batherson has 7 goals not 6 and is tied for the tournament lead, he doesnt get to play with the best players on his team until he gets pp time. I dont think expectations are too high... I havent seen anyone suggesting he is going to be some goal scoring machine in the NHL its just noted that he has come into his own this year and as a late bloomer with size and skill he is showing some upside. It seems to me like you are raining on the parade for a reason I have a hard time understanding.

Your initial statement was baffling, and when called out upon it you resorted to semantics in a poor face-saving attempt.

Wow did you misread the post if that's what you got out of it. I knew little about Batherson before this tournament started, he's looked very good, reminds me of Mark Stone which would be great for Ottawa because Mark Stone for my money is one of the best players in the league and talent is very rarely found in those rounds. There was no face saving attempt, as I can't even understand why I would need to save face for complimenting a player I like, I'm just a very fact driven person and the information presented to me was factually incorrect.

This is the silliest argument, people are way too sensitive on here.

I agree. I wouldnt necessarily use his scoring tonight as a reason to think hes going to be something special in the NHL. Two deflection goals and the 7th goal of the game (although nice) werent exactly the most skilled goals. If he was dominating the puck all game and making things happen it would bode better for him, but it was really Makar generating chances for him. Although there is something to being opportunistic and able to score when you get a chance, Batherson does seem to capitalize and thats definitely not a bad thing

Makar just shot the puck towards towards the net. You're making it seem like he has been setting up Batherson for tap-ins.

If anything Batherson has helped Makar get on the board with some terrific tips on shots that otherwise wouldn't have went in.

Reminds me of the talk of Stone being a product of Huberdeau at the 2012 WJC.

not the biggest or fastest out there
style /plays under the radar

but by far is ALWAYS at the right place at the right time
Hockey IQ through roof

comparable : Briere

Has all the attributes you look for in a center- size, skating, vision, hands and hockey intelligence.
Makes his teammates better. Can score goals just as well as he can pass but more of a playmaker. Always looking for the open man. Knows how to use his frame to protect the puck and make plays. Works very hard on and off the ice, determined to get better in all areas. Silky smooth hands and great creativity. Makes plays that few attempt.

If you like Mark Scheifele or Mark Stone you're going to like Drake Batherson.

His skating is ugly but is good everywhere else.

Wouldn't say UGLY but you're definitely right. Definitely the aspect of his game he needs to work on most. We said the exact same about Stone after his killer World Juniors and D+1 season so let's hope it turns out similar!

I see him and Brown as our Zibanejad/Stone of 6 years ago. Brown will be better now and for a couple years but Batherson could definitely end up the superior player in 4 or 5 years.

The development curve for Batherson is just a vertical line, watching him on the Eagles was nothing short of crazy, goes from getting cut from the team one year, to a near PPG player the next year (his first in the Q), to making Team Canada and being one of their best players in his 2nd year in the Q. Now he's clipping along at 2PPG in the AHL.

Very unlikely this guy doesn't become a top 6 winger.

Spot on. It doesn't take a genius to see that he's going to be a star in league one day, its only a matter of time based on his development up till now. He just keeps blowing away expectations.

If he was drafted in the 1st round he would be unanimously considered a cant miss offensive star at this point. But I kinda like it this way better; Ottawa just keeps seeming to find talent in the later rounds.

he's played like a top 10 draft pick ever since being drafted.

What a wizard Trent Mann is.

I remember during the WJC hearing that he was actually pursuing a full time career in golf and didnt invest into junior hockey full time until 2 years ago. This kid has developed ridiculously in that short time span.
