C Casey Mittelstadt (2017, 8th, BUF) II

Not worried at all about his fitness, McKenzie's scout survey had him ranked 7th and HockeyProspect.com 8th - with full knowledge of his combine results and interviews.

We'll see him in a Sabres uniform this weekend at their development camp.

Casey will be wearing #77 at the Sabres Development Camp which starts Saturday.
You can watch Casey and the rest of the Sabres prospects when the Sabres stream their 3 on 3 tourney (Tuesday, 9:15 am ET) via their website.

@ByMHarrington - Mittelstadt showing good hands in battle drills as u would expect of top-10 pick. Crowd liked how he just roofed one past Johansson. #Sabres
@JoeYerdon - Casey Mittelstadt said he didn’t think his hands were back yet today (he takes pride in them). Could’ve fooled us. #SickMitts
@JourdonLaBarber - Hudson Fasching is rooming with Casey Mittelstadt. Fasching played his college hockey @ Minnesota, which Mittelstadt will attend next season.

He is called a boom or bust prospect by some, but I don't see it. He is a boom, or meh player. Don't see any way that he isn't some sort of contributing NHL player, even at worst. He is a smart player, not just a player that is in love with his dangling skills. Has the hockey smarts to figure out how he will fit into a team. There has been criticism of his defensive play, like just about every young offensive talent. He can figure out that. What the Sabres, or any other team, is looking for is that homerun offensive talent who can drive an offense. CM has the chance to be that.

If he is moved to a wing, it should be with a more defensive C who will let him handle the puck. He needs to be the one orchestrating the offense. He could be a faster, bigger Granlund with a shot.

Agreed. I absolutely hate this prospect and everything about him, but he's simply too talented/smart to be a bust as you pointed out. IMO he's a sure fire second liner bare minimum.

"Everything about him is terrible...except his hockey sense and he's really talented and will be a top 6 at worst"

Be perfect with O'Reilly

Watch the hands. You have certain expectations when you see top-10 draft picks for the first time. Casey Mittelstadt has had that pizazz the last two days at Sabres development camp.
He's got the quick jets in his skates and the shifty moves with the puck. There are a lot of drills being thrown at the prospects, many of whom are seeing life in a pro camp for the first time.
Mittelstadt, taken eighth overall last month in Chicago, is certainly getting a ton of attention from the fans who have poured into HarborCenter to take a look at the Minnesota high school star.
"It's July. There's a little bit of rust," Mittelstadt said during one break in the action. "One of the best parts of my game are my hands. When those are a little rusty, I'm a little off."

There are some simple hockey drills being applied in this camp but several wrinkles thrown in as well. There are obstacles around the ice.
Mini nets in use as pseudo defenseman or a passing boomerang. Quickness and speed are tested. Stickhandling and passing skills are quickly noticeable.
Mittelstadt has looked strong in those areas, just as you would imagine. But like said, it's July hockey. This is only a glimpse of what he has.
"To be honest, I think for me the hands are the last thing to come back," he said. "I've been skating back home so that helps.
Especially wanting to come to camp not too rusty. The hands are the most important part of my game. When they come back is when I think I'm playing well."

Mittelstadt's instincts in tight spaces have been obvious thus far, so it will be interesting to watch him with room to work during Tuesday's 3-on-3 tournament that will close camp.
"One thing they want to do here is play with some pace," he said. "I love to do that. Get out there and get the wheels going.
If you're competitive enough, there's always something you want to prove. I've always got a littlle bit of a chip on my shoulder.
It's important to come out, be comfortable, play your game and try to be yourself. It's important to not do anything you can't do or that's out of your zone."

I think he's a gluttonous mess that won't be able to carry a team or do anything great in the playoffs. That's what I meant, although I do see where you could have got that confused if you didn't my posts in the last CM thread. (Got booted out, but as always Roy Baby did numbers and got the discussion rolling)

I compared him to Phil Kessel earlier, but after thinking about it, the perfect comparable player in impact popped in my head: Radim Vrbata.

He's that guy that is so skilled, nasty snipes, but lacks any on ice drive unless its an opportunity to be self serving i.e. will skate with rockets attached to his skates at an empty netter, score in the last 42 seconds of the game!!...while still down by 4, starts tapping his stick on the ice til the cows come home on the PP, etc.. Total no show in playoffs.

Regular season and boxscore hero, but no heart.

Basically, on a scale of Jake Virtanen to Sidney Crosby when it comes to commitment, he's a Radim Vrbata with Phill Kessel's trash can body.

Point getter with no heart. CM carries losing habits with strong intrinsic

CM is nothing like Kessel, either as a player or a person.

"Gluttonous mess?"

How many times have you seen him in person?

For me personally, getting 0 pullups is a pretty big red flag when it comes to your commitment to general fitness. It means that you've completely neglected basic maintenance fitness, and that reflects to future work ethic.

Now, that's just me and maybe that's me overreacting, but is it a coincidence that Bennett has been underwhelming after getting 0 pullups?

Obviously, that's not the only thing that matters, but combined with my past concerns I still believe that Mittelstadt has a lot to prove before I'd be willing to label him as a "surefire top 6 NHL player".
