He's second in the WHL in points. How's he playing?

He can score points without making any improvements because he's a talented player. Is he playing more of a two way game, simpler hockey?

He was bad at our prospects tournament, and was sent back to junior. He wasn't even at Training Camp for the Rangers. The team and player decided he should return to his junior team.

Has anyone watched any of his games yet?

I have, not specifically for him but he's looked good to my eye. I can look for those things you mentioned. PG is on a serious roll right now.

Why not? He had a good year and the Rangers aren't exactly flush with prospects.

I don't think averaging less than 1PPG in your final year before you are AHL/ECHL eligible is good for a skill forward, nor is it good to have a lower PPG average than the previous season.

He had a really good start, but was terrible after that.

He has some talent, but plays too much of a junior game, and while he is talented, he's not so talented that he's worth a contract having made no improvements to his game in other areas.

I wouldn't have given a contract yet to Fontaine or Ronning either, but Fontaine got one, and Ronning might as well, so I don't know. Its possible Morrison could get one, but I wouldn't give him one.

Thanks, was just curious. I thought Morrison looked good when I saw him but I can understand if they didn't see much progress. I've seen a lot of Fontaine, he deserved a contract. Not sure he will be a NHL player but he should be at least valuable to the org at the AHL level.

Morrison was also injured a few times this season and in playoffs.

I can see an ELC go his way, but I can also see it not.

Morrison is a top six forward or bust. Won't be much benefit anywhere else in the lineup. That goes for NHL or AHL and beyond.

Anybody watching his playoffs? What the heck is going on? He's 21, playing as an big time, over-age player. Just wondering what this guy is doing to have 21 points in 7 playoff games. He's pretty much done nothing his entire junior career. Figuring it's a fluke or he's on a line with a couple of great players.

I remember having a little hype for him, completely forgot he existed

262 pts in 334gp is nothing I guess.

But it’s unlikely his game translates to the next level, in fact I’d be confident it doesn’t.

He’s an OA player doing well - this is nothing new to junior jockey.

Big talent, just hasn't put it together yet.

Morrison is a very good stick handler with nifty passing and good skating, but he's going to need to learn to play a simpler game. Nearly every single time he touches the puck he wants to stick handle through 15 players. It sometimes works, but a lot of the time he gets himself into trouble with it, and that trouble isn't just turning the puck over. In one instance he lost control of the puck, and looked down around his feet to find it, and he got absolutely lit up. The stick handling is impressive, but he has to learn to make the simple pass, chip the puck along, shoot the puck in and make boring but effective plays like that. You can't go one on one trying to beat everyone on every shift.

He's very thin, but seems to have good height, maybe 6'0-6'1. He should put on some weight. He does tend to coast defensively, but his defense isn't terrible. I'm unsure about his shot, but he doesn't seem to like it too much, a lot of passing and stick handling during times he could've shot the puck.

Scouting the stat line.

Morrison is a really good skater, stick handler, and he has really good hands. His problem is that he tries to stick handle the puck into the net after doing a few circles around the net, and holding onto the puck for a minute. :sarcasm:

If he tried to simplify his game, he could have a role in the NHL, likely as a middle 6 winger. He has some skills that play in the NHL, but plays too much of a junior hockey game.

I said nothing about his stats. Not good, I know. The point on Morrison is that he has the offensive talent that could play in an NHL lineup, if he learns to play more of a team style game offensively, bulks up and starts to play defense.

I'm not saying it will happen, but there have been plenty of forwards who didn't put up 1PPG in junior, but made it to the NHL, and now play in NHL top 9's. Morrison has certain individual offensive skills that can carry him beyond that of players with better stats in junior hockey, but he obviously needs to work on the other parts of his game to get to the NHL.

I agree in most cases about your stats oriented approach to scouting Rangers prospects, but in a case like this, its evident watching Morrison that if he made some changes to his game, he has the talent to be an NHL top 9 forward.

Morrison is another player who just has not impressed after being regarded as a steal by the Rangers. He has talent, but too much of a junior hockey player. Doesn't seem to be trying to play a pro style game. He was very bad at the prospect camp. I suspect he'll struggle to make the AHL next year. Likely starts in the ECHL, if he even gets signed to a contract.

Morrison is the type of underachieving junior player you do give a deal. He has tools, he could be really good, he's just not yet. He's a project, maybe he figures things out, maybe not, but his upside is very high for a player drafted where he was in the draft.

2 non signings that shocked me from 2015 draft are Morrison(NYR) and Gawdin(STL)

Happy to see both doing extremely well

Flames did extremely well signing Gawdin when STL didnt get it done

2 goals and 1 assist tonight.

Continues to the lead the WHL Playoffs with 26 points in 9 games.

After 35 points in 42 games with Vancouver to start the year, he has 66 points in 41 games total (regular season and playoffs) with the 'Canes. He has found himself a great fit and chemistry. The funny thing is, he's not even playing on the top line.

Have my doubts he puts it together in the pros but will be interesting to follow his progression.

His playoffs were completely out of nowhere. Was a bust headed to CIS hockey 8 weeks ago and now has an NHL contract with the Kings.

Always had a nice skating/puckhandling package but never seemed to have the IQ to get anything done with it.
