Spellacy is a good two way forward - He is big, at 6’3” and is an elite skater. He imacts the game physicality, defensively and offensively. He was drafted by the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL and attended the u17 USNTDP where he was one of the final cuts.

Spellacy is actually a two sport athlete and is a very good football player, he is a Free Safety and a Wide Receiver who has generated college football interest who has yet to decide whether or not he will pursue football or hockey although it appears he’s leaning towards hockey.

Guess that eliminates his college football chances too

I actually don't know how that works.

When you go to play "Professionally" in the CHL - does that eliminate your prospective football eligibility also or just your eligibility to play college hockey? It's interesting to wonder about that, and I would love someone who knows more about NCAA eligibility than myself to chime in.

Because this kid had 5 Division 1 NCAA Scholarships on the table and he choose to go Hockey and to the Windsor Spitfires instead.

The Spellacy family has been fantastic contributors to the St Ignatius community. Three brothers and a cousin I believe. Best was Aidan who played at Robert Morris and St. Cloud. I always hoped AJ would play HS hockey for SI. Little did I know his talent level.

I don't know the rules but if a kid plays a couple of years of Major Junior I doubt he can ever go back to football.

SI's loss but I wish the kid all the luck.

Remember Chris Weinke, he got a full ride to Florida State to play football, then was drafted by the Blue Jays and signed a contract with them and made it all the way to AAA. Then left baseball at 25 years old and took his full scholarship to play football at Florida State. Oh, and then won a national championship, and a heisman, and was drafted in the NFL....

He apparently has MAC level offers, still D1 but not the highest level. Still interesting seeing a kid who had options like that in football & hockey as there’s usually not a whole lot of overlap between those sports potential prospects. Baseball & football are more overlapping usually than the other sports.

This kid is going to be a force in the OHL in a couple years. Impressive preseason for the kid.

Somewhat amazing that an Ohio kid with elite football skills (okay, just MAC scholarship offers, but still) would choose hockey instead.

He was one of of not the final cut for the team, actually.

At first he struggled to find a role for the team, but in the final 2 days of camp he decided to say f*** it and just have fun, apparently he was one of the best players at the camp in the final 2 days, impressing everyone with his size, and two-way game and really turned heads. Alas it was just not enough For the staff to forget how out of place he looked at the start and he was one of the final cuts.

This kid gets at least 2-3 breakaway opportunity's per game.

His production hasn't really improved but he's 6'3 with a football mentality mean streak and is lightning fast. I could see teams thinking he could fill into a Josh Anderson lite type of role. Not sure if he's worth a pick, but he might be a mid to late round candidate, or with growth in his D+1, someone who gets drafted in 2025.

It's extremely rare for anyone outside of Minnesota to play both hockey and football at a high level. Relatively few, even in areas where hockey is popular, play both, and those that do typically commit to one early on because minor hockey takes up too many months.

Remi Ellie didn't produce at a remotely quality level in his DY and was drafted too high because he showed potential to be an energy depth forward. Spellacy just seems like a type who gets drafted because he isn't a completely junior skill style "soft, needs points to be effective, shitty defensive zone player". Spellacy could be a PK specialist and be effective at the pro level.

Sure. No argument there.

Some prospects develop. Some stagnate.

He has terrible counting stats this season and he plays on a terrible Windsor team. He has flaws to his game no doubt but I think NHL teams have time for one of the fastest kids in the draft class, who happens to have a great compete level and is physical. I think he’ll be selected at some point.

I think there is a chance Spellacy carves a bottom-6 energy role in the NHL. Stats don’t tell the whole story here.
