Value of: Byram (or Power) to CGY

Someone to partner with Dahlin at 5 on 5 and be on PK #1?
Dahlin can partner with pretty literally anyone. Keep in mind that he's best at and prefers to play the right side.

A complementary LHD for Dahlin is on the list of needs but not high.

The guy we DESPERATELY need a RHD for is Power. A guy who can carry the load defensively while Power does his thing offensively.

Not sure how much it matters but Andersson is fine defensively in his own zone. Where he gets beat is on rush plays due to his foot speed.

Granted, "fine defensively" would be an upgrade to some of the dreck we're putting out there...........

Personally, I'm looking for better than "fine".
Well he's great on the PK (look at he blocked shots this year) and is physically strong. Great leader too. He wouldn't be at all available if Calgary didn't have so much RD depth and a strong vet core already with Weegs, Backs, Coleman, Huberdeau, and Kadri.

Andersson wants to go to a contender. Could always be wrong but I doubt he views Buffalo as one.

He's been pretty adamant about wanting to stay in Calgary. If he doesn't stay it's because he prices himself out. He will probably sign with whoever is willing to pay him 8.5M though
“I understand that it’s a business and that it’s the business side of it and it’s got to make sense for both sides. They have a number in mind and I have a number in mind. I don’t even know what the number is because I haven’t even thought about it for a second, honestly, within the last three months.”

I don’t think adamant quite fits.

As a Flames fan, I'd rather go all in on trying to sign Gavrikov if he hits the market... or trade for someone like Mario Ferraro or get Skjei out of Nashville or Romanov off the Island if those teams are going to rebuild.

The Byram/Dahlin combo was the most effective #1 pairing in the NHL this year: 70% ES goals.

Dahlin doesn’t really need a partner per se, he elevates whoever he plays with and his pairing will succeed with any reasonably good player.

Change Dahlin to Power in your question and you’re bang on.

Power regressed last year and was a liability defensively.

personally I think it was a blip caused by the big contract and new coaching staff, but he was the king of standing next to the guy who scored.
When Dahlin got hurt the team literally fell off a cliff in the most insane way imaginable. Without Dahlin around to carry him Byram wasn't very good at all.

I'm not saying you're wrong, because I don't pay attention to the Sabres... but defense pairings are often all about chemistry. 2 guys can be amazing together, and complete shit with different partners. I saw this for years in Calgary with Giordano and Brodie... both were still good, but never as good apart.

I would disagree with that assessment. Poor gap control for starters. Not overly physical in the corners or in front of the net, poor hockey IQ.

Or at least that is how he has been playing since getting run over in Detroit.

I'm not sure how he will get his game back.

I mean who do we have to play top pairing right side D with Dahlin out? Of course they wouldn't do well....like what are we expecting here? Our team collapses with Dahlin out because we didn't even have a real capable top 4 right side D-man with him out of course the D pairs are going to look horrible.

I’m curious what Sabres’ fans think Byram is going to get for the next contract. Also, which forwards stand out as being big contributors to the many goals allowed?

AFP has him at 5.2M on a short deal or 7.2M on a longer deal. Probably something close, they seem to have solid history with these estimates.

As for forwards who contribute to the GA at 5-on-5? The answer would be "yes" to just about all of them not named Benson.

Depends on if you're talking long or short term with Byram. Short term, I think the AAV is likely in the 4-6M range. Longer term....I think it's somewhere between 7-9....and frankly, that's based on talent and upside than it is actual performance.

Forwards that are big contributors to goals allowed? Tage, JJP and Quinn are the 3 major culprits....with JJP probably being the biggest offender. Cozens, in his time here, certainly didn't help matters at all either. Zucker, for all the good he did, was also kind of low-key not so hot defensively.

Basically, if a Sabre isn't named Tuch (or Benson) and played a good amount of time in the top 6.....he wasn't good defensively.

Dahlin plays RD1

What about him?

Ideally Buffalo wants someone who can fit with Power

Samuelsson--DAHLIN
POWER--XXX
Byram-Clifton
Ryan Johnson- JBD
The thought is trading one of Byram, power, samurlson out and get a RD back. It might not be done in one trade.they could trade their D for a F, then trade I mg a different F for the RD
Dahlin is a left shot D. If he’s playing the right side that’s not any coach’s preferred choice. If the idea is to trade Byram or Power for a guy who can partner at evens with Dahlin then for sure that player will be a right shot. It would be beyond backwards to trade for another left shot D.

It's Dahlin's preferred choice and now 2 coaches (Granato and Ruff) have publicly stated that he does, in fact, play better on the right-hand side.
Coaches say things publicly to support their top guys.
Dahlin should play his natural side. If the Sabres had a right shot D (like Hronek does for Hughes) that would make Dahlin a better player.
There are reasons why the Sabres have been terrible during the Dahlin years. One of them is they have yet to find him a good partner. If they could use Byram to acquire a good right shot partner for Dahlin that makes them a much improved club.
