My only argument is that he was 3rd in scoring for Team USA. So, questionable in my opinion.
With the least minutes of any scorer and the highest shooting percentage.
Yes he made some unwise plays but he was not the worst guy out there.

Nothing wrong with what Brown said.

Sitting him for almost the entire game, saying they need goal scoring, when Brown potted a couple himself, is idiotic.

- You wear out the other players
- You make it easier for the opposition to match lines
- You send a "panic" message to the team

If Bylsma had so little confidence in Brown's ability, he should have dressed another player. Even if he HAS played poorly, the coach has other players to dress.

What a terrible series of coaching decisions.

And yet Bylsma preaches accountability towards Brown and then kept sticking Orpik out there against top lines for him to just get destroyed (especially against Canada) way to many questionable coaching decisions once the prelims ended. Bylsma is not a good coach. He makes way too few adjustments and plays into opponents games. Seen it in Pittsburgh and it was on full display here.

But it sounds good on HBO when he asks Sid if he is ready to go then calls out 87 and the rest of the numbers of the starters and then says Flower in the cage.

look at it from OUR side, the Kings side.

Dustin's minutes were reduced, so he had less wear and tear. the dude needs rest. i still don't understand why they decided to not operate last summer to repair the ligament.

last season we saw the same type of result with Kopitar. now Brown is struggling through a season and its clearly apparent his skating is being affected.

this medical strategy of letting it heal on its own over the summer imo doesn't work. it delays the ability and time for the athlete to begin PT to strengthen the joint.

i went through a similar situation from ski racing and had arthro on my knee to clean up cartilage and two damaged ligaments. for me they had to operate because the amount of cartilage damage was to extreme. talking with surgeon and PT specialist though they laid out the different options and why they will operate. one ligament they let heal on its own, but i had to wait to begin PT for six weeks. if they had surgically repaired both i could have begun PT at most two weeks after surgery.

as a result i don't understand why both Kopitar and Brown just didn't go in and have the knees scoped out.

I have often wondered the same thing. I am only speculating, because it's the only thing that makes sense to me is that maybe letting these injuries heal on their own has a prognosis that provides a better long-term outcome. With the length of the contracts some of these guys are signing maybe that's the strategy?

Maybe someone with a medical background can provide an opinion. The Kopitar and Brown injuries were likely partial tears I would think. A complete tear would require surgery, wouldn't it?

Then you have Quick who did the back surgery and looks as strong as ever.

?????????????

yes the partial tears they will decide to operate or not on them. it depends on the severity of the tear, as well as the extent of the surrounding damage.

in my case i had two partial tears in the 40% range, but the amount of cartilage damage was over 60%. the video of the surgery was amazing. my knee looked like a snow globe with all the damage floating around (they pump the knee up with saline).

full tears they have to operate and they will also decide if they replace the ligament entirely, or stitch it back and hope for it to re-heal.

perhaps the long-term prognosis is what they are going for. i would assume that any type of "invasive" procedure versus not performing one, would have different results. i don't know, i'm not a doctor

Also not a doctor but have had similar injuries and the very simple answer in those cases was "surgery bad" unless necessary. YMMV, of course, and obviously they have better doctors than I do, but most medical professionals in my family seem to ascribe to the idea that if you can heal without going under the knife, all the better.

What was it that Herb Brooks said? A bruise on the leg is a hell of a long way from the heart. Words Dustin Brown should live by.

 Did I miss something, has Dustin Brown mentioned anything about his injury being the reason for his poor play of late ? Frankly I've not seen him issue any excuse's, rather much like Quick he's put full blame squarely on his own shoulders and has tried to play through it, showing the heart of a captain, of a competitor, of Dustin Brown. So I'm not sure what exactly THAT quote is suppose to infer ? Other than the typical hey look isn't cool to bash a guy while he's down reply we see all to often on this board. :shakehead

Of late? The poor play has been going on for more than just a few weeks or months. Maybe he didn't make excuses other than saying there was some discomfort playing with a brace that he has to adjust to, but I see plenty of others making excuses for his play.

But yeah, I guess for those who haven't paid attention it'll seem like a new trend to bash Dustin Brown. He's the captain who was given a huge pay increase. Shouldn't more be expected of him? :shakehead

To be fair, that doesn't kick in until next year :P

And I'll take full responsibility for making excuses for him. I think the knee is a legitimate excuse just as I thought Kopi's was last year. And look at him now. I'll gladly take the heat for thinking an injury holds a guy back and I don't expect people to admit they were wrong later (most of the folks bashing Kopitar sure didn't).

I like that these guys aren't making excuses for their play, but to dismiss it is wrong, in my opinion.

I agree, I haven't seen Brown say anything other than he wants to get rid of the brace. It's folks on message boards that have gone on from there and speculated on whether the knee is affecting his play.

I still think Kopitar was injured regadless of what Kopitar/Kings said.

He looked bad last playoff's,

Totally different player this year look wise, he still had his little mid season break.

But Kopitar looks healthy , last year he did not in the playoff's.

I'm a big Dustin Brown guy but it's coming to the point where he needs to start contributing on the ice in meaningful ways. Strong play down the stretch run and into the playoffs could do a lot to silence his critics but his window is slowly closing.
