It'll be interesting with the cap going up if you don't see some teams just opting to bury contracts or retain cap.

Like, for Detroit, the obvious option is Justin Holl. If they buy him out they eat a $1.13M x 2 cap hit. If they bury him they eat $2.25M x 1. More cap on the burial, but one less year. They have $26M in cap space next year and will honestly have a very hard time spending nearly that much if they re-sign AlJo/Berggren/Soderblom and run Cossa as Talbot's backup.

Yeah. The cap rising like that will make it really interesting, which teams actually reach for the panic "buyout" button, and which decide to just ride it out a little longer because they've got more cap space to waste on dead weight or overpayments.

It could even allow teams to move some of these bad contracts with a minor sweetener, if some of the mediocre UFAs start getting the sort of contract numbers that are being tossed around as plausible.

Wouldn't shock me if the Sharks bought out Vlasic, even if he only has one more season left on his contract, just to get him off the roster. Dude is totally cooked as a player and never was a leader, even when he was good. No reason to keep him around, waste of a roster spot.

I suppose they could waive him and assign him to the AHL with the hope that he would refuse to report, letting them terminate his contract or something.

Thats not gonna happen lol. Hes owed $5.5M next year.

Miromanov and Bean could be buyout candidates for the Flames but it seems unlikely since Miro can be buried with no cap penalty and if Bean is buried it'd only be a 600k penalty for 1 year rather than 583k for 2 years.

Unless there's something i'm unaware of off the ice with Miromanov...i can't see why the Flames would go the buyout route. Over just...burying him, or really, i'd bet some team would take a flyer on waivers. He's still big and tall and a RHD with some desirable traits.

I still remember the amount of flack Buffalo fans gave me for calling that Samuelsson contract a joke.

Good times
I’ll still defend it. You pay for the player, not the injuries. If he can ever get / stay healthy, he’s worth it. If he can’t, it doesn’t use up cap space on LTIR. The Buffalo blueline sorely misses him when he’s out

They won't be bought out, but I'd love for the Avs to explore trading both of Miles Wood and Josh Manson for players on other teams that aren't good fits for those respective clubs. Add Ross Colton to that list.

A contract shuffling of sorts.

If it’s going to be bought out, it’s a horrible contract lol. Literally paying a guy to not be on your team

You knew he was going to be injured that much? What are the lottery numbers for tomorrow?
I knew giving a 7 year contract for not a small amount of money to a guy with ~45 nhl games to his name and no offensive game to speak of was ridiculous yes.

Him missing 86 games due to injury since the start of 22-23 had nothing to do with it, eh? Cool. Good to know.

More interesting as the deadline approaches, is who’s going to possibly have their contract terminated over the next 2 weeks, so he can sign wherever he likes?

Hearing it’s becoming a legit option for Tarasenko in Detroit, after it looks like he nixed a deal to a contender.

He wants to return to Florida is the speculation, but he may not clear waivers is the problem, and Detroit doesn’t feel they have to retain.

So if he doesn’t change his mind and it’s Florida or staying in Detroit, good bet Detroit will just keep him for the rest of the season, and part ways this summer.

If the relationship has deteriorated because he’s now saying Florida or nothing, maybe they will put him through waivers. The problem with that is, it just doesn’t look good and Detroit’s going to be a legit destination over the next few years. So why deal with any reputation consequences, even if he is claimed by a contender not named Florida?

It’s a situation to keep an eye on.

It doesn’t need a buyout. If he’s in the lineup and healthy, he’s a good player and worth it. If he’s not, it’s LTIR. It’s not a talent issue, just health. When he’s healthy, he adds a lot to the team. 4 million worth for sure.

Pittsburgh is going to buy out or trade Jarry with a sweetener. There's an outside shot at Graves, but it's not really worth it, IMO. He isn't taking a spot from a younger player, the cap is skyrocketing, seems to be well-liked in the room, and is moderately effective as a bottom-pair D, albeit grossly overpaid. I can see Graves having value with retention later in his contract.

T.J Brodie for Hawks

Looks cooked and is blocking young D from playing

Next year he will be even worse that one can't even see him as good #7 candidate
Blackhawks might struggle to make it to the Min next year so buying out Brodie is probably not happening. with Brodie they have only 60K committed to about 19 roster players and they don't have any RFA's with larger #'s. is they would make him the 7/8 D.

Teams are welcome to take that chance, but he can't crack one of the thinnest D's in the NHL. And he's been straight up bad when he has.

Joel Hanley has been playing top pairing. Tyson Barrie's corpse continues to skate around the ice. Jake Bean has been leaps better than Miro.

Miro even being consistently bottom pairing quality would have been nice. But he's looked worse than the rest of the 7th d-men calibre guys rotating through.

It's like you stopped reading after the first 10 words, where I talked about a buyout being unlikely.

It's more like...you even mentioned him at all, specifically in a thread about buyout candidates. Which seems...farfetched beyond purpose, if it's unlikely enough to be surly about commenting that it does seem extremely unlikely, unless there are extenuating factors i'm not aware of off the ice.

Seattle isn't going to save much out of that buyout when you consider that we would need a viable backup so the team can STOP overusing daccord. And here's the thing it won't make a darn difference. Seattle issue isn't at goalie. its defense is being bleh this year and offense that can't even control the puck enough to generate more shots.
