Post-Game Talk: Built. Different.

lol he's bracing himself planking his body on the way down knowing he's hitting goalie lolllll looks like a trust fall

Lol, gets funnier every time I watch it. He crosses one foot over to dig into the ice to make sure he pushes towards Skinner. No effort to put an arm out or anything to soften his fall, he wanted to tip over as hard as possible into Skinner.

What a ridiculous fluke that the puck goes off Bennett and into the space Bennett creates by pushing Skinner out of the way. Would have been thinking about that goal a lot longer than his void of time between game 1 and 2 if that did ultimately cost us the game in the end.

A few thoughts after a nights sleep and covering much of what has been said:

  • I don’t know how it’s not interference. The opposing player still has to make some effort and he did the complete opposite. Bad call, good challenge regardless of the 2 goal swing. I think it created an us against them mentality. Also on that play was the missed hook that prevented Walman from attempting the retrieval.
  • Perry has to watch his stick. The two penalties were sloppy, but I will say in the trip case there was a very healthy embellishment that could have been called.
  • The linesman were an absolute joke. I’ve never seen that many draws get redone and guys get tossed out of the circle. It was like we were paying to watch them.
  • Florida is making a mockery of the icing and no change rule, the amount of time they took damn near every time as they feigned confusion, sent out the wrong guy to only have to swap again was something I’ve never witnessed. Warn them and penalize them.
  • Oilers outside of the Bennett goal defended well. That was just an abomination. It was almost a 2 on 4 that they somehow turned into an in zone breakaway. Easily correctable.
  • The breakout needs some work, the forwards are either flying early or the defence isn’t moving quick enough but it left too much space and too many Panthers between the d and the forwards. Too many turnover and passes to nowhere were an issue with this. The Center is gonna need to delay a bit to give an option here.
  • Panthers super aggressive on the pk, which is what cost them the ot goal but the player up high better be alert cause they are looking to breakfree.
  • Wingers need to be a bit more assertive when the d ring the puck around. Too many times they got on the wrong side of the puck there and lost the battle.
Won the game, but have some work to do which is also a good sign.
Enjoyed this summary. To my eye we looked nervous in the first half of the game despite the early goal. To win that game, coming from behind to take the series lead, calm the butterflies and settle into the series, is massive. We know we can be better, the question now is, can Florida?

My only concern is Bennett. A well-timed knee or dirty elbow can change the complexion of this series very quickly and it's not like we can expect the league to do anything but look the other way no matter what happens. Protecting yourself out there is a skill like any other. The boys better remember that.

I legitimately love the Barnburner podcast, mainly because I’ve listened to those guys for years and years. Great guys, and one with constantly terrible takes.

Today’s episode was brilliant. They can’t say anything bad about the Oilers, and it was difficult for them. They avoided talking hockey for as long as they could. When they got into it and talked about how stupid it was for Calgary to trade Kylak for nothing 7 years ago, Rhett Warrener came in strong with this:

We’re f’ed. We’re absolutely screwed. One hundred percent f’ed. Fact of the matter is, these pricks up north are probably going to do it, it sucks, I hate it. And yes, we’ve got another decade of them continuing to be good and we don’t have any stars to go up against them!”

At full volume. It was great.

I'd build a goddamned statue to Darnell Nurse if he removed Bennett from this series like he did Hintz.

Been my favorite podcast this entire post season. They're professional Oilers haters that literally can't find anything to hate and are in fact starting to get scared.

And Rob Brown and Cam Moon thought it was. The complaining comes from our fanbase whenever we figure a call doesn't go our way. The truth is, if we go back through all the challenges, most of what should go our way does. That is just the way the calls go.

Please go look at every single goal that has been disallowed due to Hyman simply touching a goalie while in the crease relative to what we saw last night and tell me this is the truth.

Ok, I had to look at CalgaryPuck. Seems their trying to cope about McDavid and the Oilers inching closer and closer has turned their thread about our series into an argument if their own team should tank or not, or that they should have already intentionally tanked long ago.

Ironic that the best performer on Florida was a 4th overall pick of Calgary's that they gave up on and threw away for pennies.

He’s done this all playoffs. How these refs haven’t figured it out is beyond me. Maybe call a goal back and he’ll stop doing it

There might be a point where a player or a team does something so consistently that it changes the refs view of it from looking for it to expecting and accepting it. That seems to be a general Florida MO too with the grabbing and interference and trash after whistles and away from the play. Refs just start to shrug their shoulders at it because if they called it, it would keep them too busy and too involved in the game. "Florida is just a tough team that plays hard, that is just their identity!". Bennett falling onto goalies any time he's touched around the net? Meh "Just Bennett being Bennett" "What do I tell Sam???"

No more than most teams. I just want people to be objective. You win some challenges, you lose some. No one is out to get us. The boys are good enough (proven last night) to overcome any situation.

Oilers had their usual 2nd period letdown, but as has been the case, Skinner has kept the period close or even. But the first and then the 3rd and OT was all Oilexcept for short moments of pushback. This becoming a theme. The Oilers tend to get better as the game gets down to the last part. It looked like the Panthers were running out of gas. Knob using 4 full lines and 3 solid sets of dmen already paying dividends,as Maurice clearly doesn't trust his 4th line very much.
Oilers probably should have locked this up sooner, but for some unfortunate events. McDavid hit the crossbar in the first, and we got the short end of the stick on the refusal of the refs to reverse the Bennett "accidental on purpose" crease crash where he fell into Skinner. And the the resulting PP and goal.

Florida pushed hard at times, but I can see Knob adjusting things to counter it. As for Maurice, how do you adjust when the other team pushes so relentlessly and outskates you and matches your hitting and truculence? As well as having a couple cheatcodes in McDrai.
