Post-Game Talk: Built. Different.

The trouble is plays can be complex involving many things. Its not debatable there was a push. its not debatable the player fell into Skinner. The part thats more subjective is whether Bennett fell too much. At some level thats the determination. Its not a 100% clear one. Its about surmising whether a player play acted the stumble or really stumbled.

I do feel it was a 50/50 or at least that it was going to be goal stands or a chance of that. Even if its 60/40 in favor of callback I don't make that challenge. I don't defer to the probability in this I defer to hockey being a momentum game and so if a team scores don't give them an immediate chance at another. Don't compound it.

LA made a mistake with their challenge and the Oilers did too. The difference is this club was good enough to bail out the error.

Another odd thing in the commentary is people say they don't trust the officiating to get the call right and yet they support the coaching challenge in purview of that. I can't reconcile the views on that. There was a considerable chance the Oil wouldn't be getting this call.

Corey Perry? How many times did this board complain about one of his goals when he wasn't an Oiler.
Unless it’s high stick or off side most reviews are a bit subjective.

Perry is a perfect example actually. We got a goal when he “accidentally” interfered with Dallas but the then the next time he pulled it they called him on it… which is totally fair. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. History should absolutely factor into decisions.

Idk I think it's pretty clear. After the skate contact Bennett makes several backwards C motions without falling at all, then right when he gets to the blue paint suddenly he's turning to make sure he can take out Skinner.

Plus, the rule specifies that you have to both be fouled (read - the refs should have called a penalty) AND make reasonable attempts to avoid the goaltender. Meanwhile you have Bennett spinning the opposite direction that the momentum from the skate clip would have him fall in a manner that ensures he hits Skinner. Even if he didn't purposely take Skinner out (which let's be real - we're talking about the guy that's managed to elbow 3 different Goaltenders in the head already this post season...), he sure as shit didn't make "reasonable effort" to avoid contact.

Idk - maybe I'm in homer mode - but I think that should be waived off 10/10.
One question. Did you ever doubt the goal would be taken back. We're you sure? My own take is its possible that the goal was going to stand. Its what I felt.

The NHL and most leagues create their own problems when going into interpretive or subjective areas. Did Bennett fall on purpose into Skinner, or was he pushed. Could even be that both occurred, which is more salient precursor.

The trouble is we can't mind read, and the NHL isn't into priors in such reviews and that this isn't a court of law tribunal where you can take weeks or years to make a decision and still get it wrong.

The fact that its interpretive and subjective goes into gray area where you can't be sure.

I mean this isn't even remotely comparable to the Kesler play. just saying.

Maybe the league should review priors but I think its clear they don't do that.

But its further reason why the Oilers shouldn't have challenged. It wasn't going to be a clear outcome.

10/10 nah, You know it isn't that.

I’m fine with violent playoff hockey… I’m fine with missed calls. Like I said I was fine with the officials.

However when you REVIEW a goal and it’s clear they in your words “cheated” then it’s a different story.

I also don’t buy Perry gets away with that.
Kane doesn't get the benefit of the doubt on that play. Perry doesn't get the benefit of the doubt on that play. Yet a guy who does this EXACT play by flopping into a goalie the second he feels contact and literally took out a starting goaltender THIS playoffs gets the benefit of the doubt.

f*** you NHL and f*** you Gregory Campbell. The bias is f***ing real.

I still don't know if I feel normal yet after that game. What a ride that was.

Almost every series we have played in memory has at least one game where circus bullshit occurs whether it be with our own play, the officiating, or both, and the other team almost always gets a free win off of it. There is a lot of series left, but I wonder if the Wes McAuley show in the first period was it and the Panthers missed the opportunity for a freebie.

That was a close, blow for blow game, but I don't know if it would have got that way had they not been handed two goals. If that McDavid chance shorthanded is a half inch lower I don't know if we don't roll over them 3 or 4 nothing. The back and forth nature of the rest of that game was caused ultimately by Wes McAuley. I don't think the game goes that way if that f***ing idiot just stayed out of it.

This group has handled moments like this well this playoff and have gotten better by the game generally. We cannot look back, we need our best in Game 2. Win that f***ing game, just please win that game, get at least one in Florida, then let's make it happen.

Oilers ended up 4-3 in penalties. They got one in OT.

The tripping on McDavid was a joke. It wasn't even a trip. Nurse deserved a hook on Barkov after he got beat.
Evander deserved a 3rd man for a straight arm

Simultaneously, lots of clutching and grabbing by Fla. They missed a hook on Kappys 2nd breakaway. The interference thing was a joke, he fell into him.

Dude, stop whining. There was a poll for worst fans in NHL. TO came up the most. Oilers were like 3rd.

So please, stop embarrassing us w/ your constant whining

So once again, we should be receiving more calls than that with the amount of actual infractions Florida commits compared to us, and once again, you either still don't know that and really are that clueless (most likely case), or you really, really like being the butt of the joke on here.

I don't disagree ftr. but its the NHL.

Yeah... it is not like this board every COMPLAINS and reffing. Nope. This board never complains about calls
You're off on one of your weird tangents again. You're congratulating a fanbase for not complaining about a puck over glass AUTOMATIC penalty. Half their fanbase probably doesn't even know the rule and the other half couldn't spell overtime if you spotted them the O and the T.

Just continue on your weird diatribes and calling out Oilers fans....for reasons? Weird takes, man.

i get what you are saying and any one who watched 10 sec previously would have seen bennett has great balance and secures his feet after the first d kicked out his skates. but again i stick with Corey perry does this multiple times a game im not going to complain about it

man we run interference like crazy. We practice doing it on PP and 4 on 4. Does anybody see that? no. Is it being called? no.

let em play.

The entire NHL playoffs have been nothing but pick plays and interference.

It's not as ugly as it was during the DPE becuase rather than be used defensively by inferior players, the interference plays are being orchestrated to create space and clean skating lanes.

If we can make adjustments/ do a better job getting the puck out of our zone we are going to roll these guys.

All their sustained pressure came from us struggling to exist the zone/ turning it over. Dallas, La, VGK were much more dangerous on the rush with their speed.
the speed rush is really our only weakness on the back end and other than Verhaguee and bennett the panthers dont have that element

Good call. Tough call between Ekblad and Bennet. They both chew my ass.
Meaning that they are good players. I used to dislike both. I can see it either way. But sometimes when I watch opponent players enough I just ttart to see what they do. They were the two best Panthers and not even close. They are almost every game.

I'm sure some opponent fans hate Draisaitl. Or Nurse. They probably hate Walman now, lol, and its guaranteed they hate Kane. The only difference is hardly any Panthers fans exist. haha

Yeah. I mean lets be honest. We cornered the market on Kane, Perry, and even Walman has some rep. We already have Nurse who has been two handing people around the crease or slashing Hintz and the board saying "he's faking it" Yeah, he faked a broken foot. Thats where the compass here has gone a bit off. People could look back and see we're maybe being homers on some of these interpretations.

We love when Walman skates right into the guy that got the OT penalty and mocks him. In another game thats unsportsmanlike.

We love when Kane flies in and sends some loser flying like a bowling pin because he touched Drai. In other instances thats a third man in.

100% like i said, i encourage everyone to watch what we get away with before complaining. its a fast game and every bit of ice matters and the picks and switch block in our zone to get the puck out happens almost regularly. if i was reffing i could call the oilers on 3-5 interference penalties a game.

I think it's down to just one irrational Bouchard critic on these forums at this point  He's been dominant, easily the best defenseman in the playoffs this year, and probably deserving of Con Smyth consideration

TO gets flak, but all the defensive cores of Florida's opponents on the way to the cup finals wilted under the Panther's forecheck, most of them lacking that dominant top pairing D in their prime that Bouchard is bringing to the game for the Oilers right now.
Yup, it's been fading for sure. Personally I think at times some peeps undervalue how tough the position is and that the development timeframe is longer. Bouch has always had elite offensive skills and now the puck poise defending is maturing. He's gone to a next level this playoff alot tied to the confidence and belief in him to play critical PK toi.

The Oilers weren't bad in the turnover department last night. At all.

We're playing one of the strongest forechecking teams ever assembled. They're going to get some of theirs.
We're not even avoiding unforced errors were avoiding forced errors. Its unreal how airtight the game is . There were instances of Florida winning puck battles multiple times and we were still containing and eventually coming up with puck.

People should enjoy this D. you will never see better. A lot of focus is on Connor and Leon. Its the D this postseason being the difference. Next level improvement on D.

Look at Marchand. Early in game he's thinking this is gonna be easy, I'm getting into some of my spots and finding open ice. Soon as the Oilers found their game his look has changed to "oh no, this is gonna be hard"

Dorothy, we're not in Toronto anymore, lol. I got a laugh at Maurices comment "we were down 2-0 to Toronto. The Oilers ain't the leaves.

Is it? I feel that the D have been excellent defending the rush. In last series Dallas had a 3 on 1, their top forwards, and didn't even get a shot. It was Walman back. Routinely opponents are getting stymied on rush chances and even going offside a lot because we're not giving them clear options. Been stellar.
