Post-Game Talk: Built. Different.

@MessierThanThou thinks there is an NHL conspiracy going on against Edmonton and they meet in a secret pizza parlor basement near the capital to discuss how to screw the Oilers
Lolz, "but I'm not like everyone else"

They were quite bad as crew last night and that "goal" wasn't for the other 31 teams in this league lol.

People still crying about the refs.

You realize they called more penalties against Florida than they did us? Sure there were lots missed but on both sides. Loose the rose colored glasses. This year's playoffs for us have been the best they've call is years. Quite fair.
100% if we are going to complain about the refs lets shift focus to the linesman, stop kicking people out every faceoff

One more, and it was only because they shot the puck over the glass. The refs made it very clear for the last 40 minutes that they would not call a penalty no matter what happened, and that’s a problem. But regardless of that, that goal challenge is an absolute joke that deserves to be called out. Luckily we came back, and it can be moved on from, but that could have been extremely costly

I have a feeling the Oilers are doing a bit of that Muhhamed- Ali thing they did to Dallas.
Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not great at dissecting plays or strategies).

The Oilers seem to be incredible at MOVING The puck, but aside from a few players (McD, Janmark, Kapi) we don't transport the puck a lot. We pass it more than skate it.

What we then do, is force the other team to skate laps and laps and laps and laps, and they basically empty the tank in the 2nd period and have nothing left in the 3rd (Easy to do with a team that's identity is a relentless forecheck). Put it past them, and watch them skate furiously back. Skate all the way in to forecheck, skate all the way back, skate skate skate skate skate.

I'm not sure if there's an advanced stat that tracks 'distance skated', but it wouldn't surprise me if their skaters skated nearly twice the distance before the 3rd period than ours did.

Florida were gasping for air in overtime, and just kept icing the puck.
They were holding on for dear life in the 3rd and OT.

I think as the series goes on, if they continue with this same gameplan, they're going to end up like Dallas. Just out of gas at puck drop.
Pretty good assessment and I do know they track distance skated as they showed it on a game once. Just don't know if it's a readily available stat.

It’s f***ing deserved . You think they should never be held to account?

i dont think they are intentionally aiming to do that specifically but that is the result of being a hard forechecking team vs a puck possession puck moving team. its one of the reasons i think LA was hanging back in the neutral zone in the 3rd periods. as this series goes on the panthers are going to get worn out if they keep playing 3 lines. which only bodes better for the oilers.

Agreed. Knob made it very clear he feels robbed and that they made the wrong call. Just because he remains composed instead of turning into a crybaby like Deboer doesn’t mean him and Bowman aren’t laying into the league right now
This is 3D Chess with the league and refs, Knob knew that goal was going to stand because there was contact. but he isolated and made the offcials on ice and off ice see that bennett is intentionally falling towards the goalie. He knows that if that happens again the call will go his way and it could be the difference between a stanley cup win and not. Big Brain move, he gambled on his PK to make that call and that didnt pan out but hes cofident enough in his team they can make it up....which they did.

FLA for whatever reason(nepotism) get more leniency than every other team in the league

Boston, Tampa, and the Leafs all were vocal about their BS over the last 2 years, it achieved nothing.

The last time anyone on the Oilers called out the officiating it got worse to the extent that US and Canadian media were pointing out how ridiculous it was McDavid hadn't drawn a single penalty over 2 straight playoff series.

So head down and get on with it is absolute the right thing for the Oilers to do, they can deal with the refs behind close doors so they're not being 'embarrassed'

How cool is that, Draisaitl's parents were right behind the FLA goal when he scored in OT.
How weird is it that this wasn't even shown? They show McD's parents every game they attend. Didn't even know Leons parents were there. Is he a footnote?

This is Leon with another monster game scoring half our goals. Telecast didn't mention once, either, that it was his 49th and 50th career playoff goals. For Modern players only Mackinnon is slightly ahead at 53 goals.

Yep, need to dig in a bit more in the faceoff circle!

Connor looked elite all game, and of course Leon showed up big time. Both of them are backchecking like demons.

I thought Jake Walman had an excellent game, almost played like our backs were to the wall. I wonder if he can keep up the intensity.

Bob still put up a .913 in this one. imo every game will be difficult due to Bob.

Bobs a gamer.

He can steal games. I thought it was really important that Oilers won that game. They can’t be losing games when they outplay the Panthers for the majority of the game.

We need to keep the pressure on the Panthers though. Bob still has bad games. We have to force him to have bad games. Hopefully he has a couple this series.

But we can’t be losing games we should of won (like last years game 1). Oilers and Stu got it done last night.

I didn’t mind the officials but that Bennet review was a clown show.

His “accidentally falling into the goalie” antics gave a goalie a concussion against the leafs… then he tried to do the exact same thing the next series.

Then HE STILL gets the call when he clearly fell on skinner on purpose. It’s beyond ridiculous.

Im hesitant to complain about bennett doing that because I KNOW corey perry is going to get us a goal this series doing the exact same thing

also lets spend more time showing STU some love here, if Stu let in that arvidsson goal bob did this whole place would be roasting him for 2 days. he didnt and made huge saves all game long

SSSSTTTTTUUUUUUUU!!!!!
People need to stop focusing on save percentages partway through a game. Especially when one of the goals involved a Florida player laying on him and another was a breakaway.

This is a great post. Good take.

I've mentioned this quite a few times but the angst about the officiating, jmo, is missing the beauty of the Oilers play in these games. Even the crowd so involved in officiating and making calls that are there or not there and so much focus on officiating, instead of the absolute joy that is occurring here on the best team in the world to watch and with world discovering our club.

Oilersfans: "egad its Wes Macauley, everything is sure to be shit"

Its just the nonstop negativity about officiating, everygame, I can see that during regular season but right now enjoy the spectacle, enjoy finding the holy grail.

TBH i'm so sick of this. We can only have 1 challenge and we need to be penalized if it's wrong because they don't want to slow the game down with "unnecessary stoppages" yet they waste 5 mins of a game by screwing around with all the face-offs....

I like that this game felt like the Oilers just picked up where they left off.

Since about midway through the Kings series they've just been consistently better than their opponents.

They give their opponents a period here or there (like the 2nd yesterday), but no opponent is allowed a full 60 and the Oilers are never out of it.

Very encouraging sign.

Bang. Again if you're not cheating here or there its not trying hard enough. This is the game of hockey. Its not choirboys out there. You're gonna see stinky elbows, slashes, physical plays. Hey, we loved plays Kane flying in to protect Leon. Sometimes thats a third man in call.

In anycase focus on the beauty of this hockey. Not who's getting the calls. This is the absolute best hockey you're ever going to see. have enjoyment of it instead of a crowd blasting officials every other minute. Just seems to be an anger about it.
