What are the essential pieces for building a Stanley Cup Champion?
#1C - Suzuki
Top end sniper - Caufield
Superstar - Demidov
High end power forward - Slaf
Elite offensive defencemen - Hutson
Shutdown physical D man - Guhle
Elite #1 goalie - Fowler?
Elite PP trigger man - Laine
Am I missing anything?
We are building something special here. Some things I think we need to complete the puzzle....
High end #2C - Hopefully Hage in the future....but we need a sure thing this summer
Some top 4 RD's - Reinbacher is projecting nice.....add one more this summer to complete the top 4.
Solid role players for your PK - Evans is that person. Hopefully we have a plan for next year when we lose Army, Dvo and Matheson.
Good backup - I feel like we have this. No way Monty, Dobes or Fowler aren't considered backups. The question is who takes them further.
The final ingredient is a competent head coach. Marty is a player development guy no doubt. The question remains whether he is enough of a systems guy to carry us to glory.
Reality check time -- if every team took turns winning the cup we shouldn't expect one for every 32 years. It is f***ing hard to win that thing. Some teams will win it multiple times over a 10 year stretch and some franchises will wait 100+ years to win it in the future. Every team is building towards a cup.
What do you guys think are essential pieces to winning a cup? Would you take away some essential pieces like powerforward to add 2 of something like scoring winger? How do you think we are doing so far with building a cup winner? I think we have some finishing touches, but we are building the right mix of ingredients.
