It's mind boggling to me how badly Chiarelli screwed up the Oilers. He literally had a lay up. Handed the trillion dollar ticket and he ripped into a trillion little pieces.

McDavid, Hall, Draisaitl, Eberle, Barzal
and Nuge would be the best top 6 in the league.

Instead they have some of the worst offensive depth in the league. And stuck with that atrocious Lucic contract.

And he had to give that pick to the Islanders instead of us for Talbot.

"Oh you don't have your first round pick this year? Hmm maybe a 2nd and a prospect instead?"

****ing jackass.

Well, Chia didnt trade away Barzal. It was the 16th pick, anything could have happened. Maybe in this alternate timeline Sweeney wouldn't have been such a moron and used ONE of his 3 picks on him, or some team in the top 10 might have taken him, god forbid the Devils instead of Zacha.

But I agree with the rest, Chia is an idiot and he not only screwed the Oilers (who cares) but he screwed us by arming our rival(s)

Kreider and Zibs go 40-40 next year.

fight me

they are so good together, just gotta hope they stay healthy. Mika getting his brains scrambed and Kreider's freak blood thing really screwed up their momentum, they were nearly as good at the beginning of the year as they are now.

I don't watch them enough so don't know but you don't feel Ristolainen is good? what if they got Dahlin? (hope they don't. hope he goes out west to arizona preferably).
He's good at hits and shooting but he's a tire fire in his own end a lot of the time

Jimmy's coming out of his college shell......really starting to get it. Lower expectations for the team I think......has loosened him up a bit......not just scoring but playing better overall. Still gives up the puck almost quite easily though.
Also, Vesey really kills me with that face AFTER he scores a goal. He considers himself a goalscorer. So when he does, he puts on this phone but obvious "been there, done that before" face and that it's "no big deal", I do it all the time.
I actually would prefer a genuine smile and a little more celebration. When he scores like Ovie, then u can put on that face that everyone seems to wanna punch.

Pionk is the player we wanted when we signed Shattenkirk and the the player we hoped we got in ADA. Giorgiev is a pretty amazing story too. Don't worry about where you come from, what people say, just go out and play. The kid can play. They ought to make Benoit Allaire the head coach because everything this guy touches turns to gold. They need to make sure he does not get away. It's a problem but a good one. Now it doesn't look like they need to rush the other Kid, I won't awaken the spelling Gestapo this early on a weekend but you know who I mean. They can take their time with him and even let him get his feet wet in Hartford if they wanted to. Now hopefully some of these other players we've picked up in trades have similar results and we will be back in business boys!

So you all know

I watch that type of play from Buffalo 37 or more times a year because I live up here. We are literally light years ahead of them in our rebuild.

Buffalo seems to take one step forward, two steps back. Seems like they have been rebuilding for like a decade now. With the Rangers, could see them make the playoffs even as early as next season.

Still think staal has more value to us than in a trade... look at his stick work. It’s still elite. He can teach that to the youngins

Upstate we got the Buffalo feed---this Brian Duff guy calls Mika Zibanejad 'the Persian Prince'--alluding to his family's Iranian background. It's a bit ****ed up that he felt the need IMO.

Not that we're all that hot but the Sabres are ****ing awful. Half the time they didn't even look interested.

Anyway congrats to Neal Pionk on his first NHL goal and he tacked on another assist. 14 points now in 21 games. Vesey with 2 goals and an assist. Kreider and Zib with a goal and an assist each. Hayes with two assists. Georgiev almost a shutout and with over 40 saves though a load of them were perimeter shots.

Still think though we should send Pionk and Georgiev down and recall Halverson (or Nell) and Zborovskiy. We really don't need the standings points.
Agree with everything except the bolded. It's not like Georgiev and Pionk are keeping the team out of the top 3 – and their continued development/emergence is IMO much more valuable to the team's future than moving from like 10 to 8 in the lottery (especially since I think they still have a legit shot at reaching as high as #7 just based on strength of schedule).

Pionk played the most out of anyone last night.

I'd be willing to bet Marc Staal is a main reason for his success. the knowledge he can bestow upon Pionk is absolutely priceless.

shoot me down if you must, but I can wager that Staal is helping out Pionk more than we know

Why can't a young guy just be good? If it's all Staal, why don't we put him with O'Gara or ADA? For crying out loud, it's Pionk making the plays. I don't see him looking over his shoulder for approval from Staal when he's making outlet passes. Passes that, for all his supposed wisdom, Staal has never been able to make himself. What does Staal know about running a power play? Zippo, that's what, because he's never been able to do anything more than chop a round puck square since he got here. He is IMO without question one of the most overrated players in the history of this board and it only started to come to light when his contract exceeded his value. All the talk of him being anything close to a #1D was 100% smoke being blown you know where. If the guys nameplate said anything else on the back he'd be your run of the mill #5 or less like he actually is. Zero offensive ability, paid like a star. They should have dumped him when he was due for a raise, IMO. Give Pionk the credit. The kid got a shot and he's making something out of it. Don't pat Staal on the back when the accolades belong to the rookie.

well I mean, sometimes guys just click :dunno: wasn't giving Staal all the credit, just suggesting he might be helping him adjust more than we think. thanks for the essay, though.

Had Pionk's first NHL goal been combined with Georgiev's first NHL shutout, it would have been an absolutely remarkable game!

You're right, Pionk is the one man team the NYR have been aching for. No one is helping him out, in fact he's the one helping everyone else out on and off the ice. He's walking everyone's dogs, he's the one spotting everyone simultaneously in the gym, he's the one bringing soup to his sick teammates, he does it all by himself. None of anything he's doing can be attributed even in part to a 10-year NHL vet assisting a rookie of ~70 professional games across the AHL and NHL and imparting the knowledge he has. I'm glad we finally found our generational talent.

Yeah ok. Fact is, they've been bringing guy after guy in to do the job and he's actually getting it done. So while everyone's breaking their fingers clapping everytime ADA makes a play that doesn't wind up in our net let's be sarcastic and salty when the undrafted kid handles the job when the guys with the pedigree haven't. Marc Staal has been called every name in the book the last three years. He's got negative value, he's a boat anchor, You name it. Now another player comes along who actually has game and he's some sort of defensive Yoda. Save it. I'm not buying what your selling, Marc. Now get off HFBoards and go to practice. Pro athletes shouldn't be posting on message boards.

There is so much sarcasm here, that even I can detect.

There is so much jocularity here. Lol

Fair point. When you have the knowledge and no longer have the skill that's called a coach. Staal should be coaching since he's done on the ice. Although this year he's had some good moments compared to the last 2. Still a bottom pair skill-wise playing top pair minutes.

It’s funny because even though Ovi has score a shit ton of goals, he still celly’s each one like a rookie with his first goal

Caring about a player's face after they score a goal is funny.
