Remember after the McEichel draft their fans claimed they "We're years ahead of Toronto in their rebuild and Babcock made a mistake when he chose the Leafs over the Sabres"
I mean.. RoR, Eichel and Reinhart have their cups... it just wasn't with Buffalo. I guess Kadri won his?

The rebuild kinda was years ahead, they just blew it up before it reached it's potential. Buffalo had the players of a cup winning core, but squandered them and then ran them out of town. And then watched them win cups elsewhere.
Kevyn Adams will have been Sabres GM for 5 years in June. He's gone through 3 coaches and traded away players like Eichel, Reinhart, Montour without significant improvement to the team. How he still has a job is beyond me.
Just wanted to make it clear that June 2025 will be the END of Kevyn's 5th year as GM, not the beginning of his 5th year. (it will be the beginning of his 6th year)

You are also asking all of them to endure more losing. Reinhart was 6 years worth. He was their first draft pick since missing the PO. He decided that he could not see the light at the end of the tunnel and exercised his right to not sign ufa years away with Buffalo.

Reinhart had been begging to sign long term with Buffalo just the year before. Instead Adams/Pegula low balled him and he went to arbitration and ended up settling on a 1 year deal. The Sabres went on to finish last place that season, and the Eichel neck stuff started.

That's when Reinhart wanted out. And I don't blame him.

Thing I don't get is to me it seems like so many good players who force their way off the team or leave tend to do so much better in new surroundings (E. Kane, Eichel, ROR, Ullmark, I'm sure I'm forgetting some). And when their players finally do break out they aren't able to maintain that same production (Tage, Cozens, Tuch). I feel like Mittlestadt is one of the few who did, which I guess is how they got Byram for him.

But like... on paper I feel like Buffalo's roster is good. I don't think this roster should be 2 points out of last place, they should be fighting for playoffs at least

Watching them last night, they looked like a collection of pretty bad players to me. It wasn’t just an effort or disorganization issue. They were constantly losing 1-on-1 battles and botching skill plays.

There are a few bright spots like Tage and Cozens who have very good shots, Byram has potential, Dahlin of course. But outside of that handful the entire rest of the roster looked like they were struggling with the skill level of the Habs, and the Habs are terrible against most of the NHL.

I don't like Buffalo. Anything about Buffalo.
Never have, never will.

But as the fan of a team that has its own ugly (and still very much ongoing) history of futility, I understand the pain the players and the fans are going through. So I hope the Sabres win their next game just to end this ugly streak, or at least end it soon. This is just horrible to watch.

Now if it was the Bruins losing like this ... different story.

Has Buffalo since 2015 made any move that wasn't forced on them to add players after the ROR/Kane/Lehner trades that used the rest of their 2015 draft capital?

Having a hard time thinking of what they added aside from the more recent Byram for Mittlestadt trade. Risto was for futures.

Feels like they never made a move to bolster the roster since then. Just relying on prospects to get better.

Kevin Adams is completely spineless. The whole "I love my team" bs is an excuse not to make a trade he might end up regretting.

I think that comes from the top, unfortunately. He’s just a yes man, allowed to make limited moves.

Somethin like assuming Peterka and Quinn were ready for the big time- I get it, but you need the right coaching staff at the very least to make that happen. Instead they’ve been left to wallow in bad habits, they haven’t magically figured it out on their own, and we need a solution there. It’s to the point where I’d argue to package ‘em both for a solid middle 6 vet- not great return, but they aren’t getting it done and we’re just ruining their potential.

Dumb mistakes compound- we didn’t spend on the free agents or bring in any vets, didn’t improve coaching, and expect better results. Huh.

How many leafs fans vs buffalo fans will be in the building on friday
80% leaf fans on the low end.

In his defence, everytime he trades someone they turn into a conn smythe contender on the eventual cup champs. Atleast he has the awareness he sucks at this.

A decade+ ago Sabres fans on this site and I went to the wall over whether we should trade an actual 1st round draft pick for Ryan Four Goal Miller. There were over two months of trade discussion before the deal happened at the deadline. My argument was the data predicted he would be bad in front of a stingy defense because there was such a mammoth mountain of that data. I was always clearly correct, and then it did happen the way I said it would happen. But it was a vile, abusive experience and before that season ended I left the site for five years.

And so the talk of them pissing away their assets for no value doesn't land the same way with me, nor does the fact they hadn't been in the playoffs for years back then and they still haven't since. Seeing a Columbus fan express genuine pity earlier in this thread was quite a thing

I'm sure Sabre fans have enough common sense to know that when their team and players are struggling, NOBODY will give them fair value in a trade.

I suggested Cozens for our top 10 1st...what else do you expect?

Even at his best hope, you are not going to get players like Suzuki or CC. Maybe Dach who is also struggling. Or Newhook.

It's a business and EVERYBODY has the common goal of winning.

Sorry

I mean, yeah, is s***s to be the Sabres, but the thread tittle could also be “The Leafs have not achieved anything with their core for 8 years”. What, really, is the difference of being ousted in the first round of the playoffs and missing it, tbh? A few home games extra for some more money to the org?

Sabres are the youngest team in the league and have some great young players. It's ugly and it's lasted way too long but that doesn't mean they should start making kneejerk moves. Just play it out - draft high this year again - and regroup next season.

They're on their 13th year of trying what you just suggested.
As I said... it's lasted too long. They had brutal luck with Eichel for example.

I'm not going to speak for the last 13 years, I'm going to speak about where they are now.

The knee jerk reaction is to just trade everyone. But they've got some great young players and they should just stick it out. And their owner needs to sack up and start paying to the cap. I don't get it, he owns an NFL team. Going to the cap should be chump change for him.

Hey, I still remember Tim Murray's interview at the 2015 draft saying you can't be upset walking into the offseason with Eichel and newly acquired E. Kane and Ryan O'Reilly. This was after his rant about losing the McDavid lottery.

That 2014-2015 Buffalo tank was insane. Anyone who could make a save was shipped out immediately and Sabres players were visibly upset when Sabres fans were cheering goals against at home.
